Mass for the Dead Arc[]

Main article: Mass for the Dead Arc

In the game, Sofie relocates to E-Rantel for her research on monsters. There she meets the protagonist and contracts his team to collect samples of the slimes in the city's sewers to discern why the monsters have gone aggressive.[1]

From her analysis she learns that the slimes have traces of alchemical solution, causing them to mutate. The magic caster brought her findings to Lakyus Alvein Dale Aindra, who then called a meeting of the city's representatives and the members of the Tripartite Alliance. Suspicion fell on Hilma Cygnaeus, the executive of the Pharmacist's Guild, for illegally stealing the substance to mutate the slimes. It was later learned that the mutation was an accident caused by the rundown from the artificial herb project, in which the solution was permeated in the soil and washed into the sewers.

After the protagonist cleared out all the mutant slimes, Sophie was in doubt that they achieved this until she saw the slime core from the Super Giant Sanitary Slime.[2]

Sophie visited the secret laboratory where Nfirea Bareare was trying to cure the contaminated Gazef Stronoff. The magic caster suggested that perhaps they should move their subject to a more open area, however, she was ignored, thus they turned to reviewing their notes on their progress in finding a cure for the Miasma which did not seem to be a poison but rather a "curse" as those afflicted remained Contaminated Beasts even after they are revived from death. Sophie had very little interest in making a cure as her focus was on slimes, but praised her peer for the work he was doing, advising him to take better care of himself before leaving.

Sophie later bumps into Fluder Paradyne outside in the streets of E-Rantel. After they share a few words, she inquires about her senior's secret project and what prompted him to conceive of such an idea given his sole interest in magic. When the wizard states that it a result of the times. After he departs she wonders if that is the case. While she finds her master's work to be amusing she however decides to focus on her own slime project.[3]

Shortly before the protagonist was granted the title as Guardian of E-Rantel and transferred the administration rights of the city to the Sorcerer Kingdom, he recruited Sophie to become part of a new research team called the E-Rantel Magic Research Institute to study a broad field of subjects for the Alliance. The magic caster happily accepted the invitation, to further her research in slimes and their potential uses. Later she was out in the field, investigating the cause of why the slimes in the Melting Pot at the Quarry failed to melt all the Chaos Beasts that fell within. Upon studying the slimes' mucus samples, she made a startling discovery.[4]

Sophie was busy at the time of the protagonist's second visit to the institute as she was engrossed on her own discoveries in the laboratory and refrained from greeting her benefactor.[5]

Sophie having the need of a strong slime for her experiments complained to Nfirea to no end. Nfirea who heard of the protagonist’s interest in suitable fiber plants that could be harvested in the Tob Forests, agreed to provide the adventurer a list though afterwards Nfirea asked that suitable slime be captured and brought to the institute.[6]

The institute would be visited again at the dead of night by Darkness, after Clementine alerted the city officials of suspicious activity from the remnants of Zurrernorn. It was thought that the old base of the cult would be targeted, but Nfirea and Sophie confirmed that they received no visitors or intruders. Sophie was confident of her slime traps she laid around the facility and reported none had caught any prey.

Since the group came out of their way to check on the institute, the adventurers asked the researcher what project she was working on. Sophie revealed that her latest pet project was a drug that suppressed the predatory instincts of slimes that she developed so that her slime trap would yield living captives. It turns out the project was actually an older one from the Kingdom to address the eating habits of the sanitary slimes in E-Rantel.

The research of the "anti-slime" agent piqued the protagonist's interest as he managed to inductively come to the conclusion that Zurrernorn's latest scheme involved the slimes of the city sewers. Armed with this knowledge, the protagonist procured a sample of the agent and gave it to Soi who was sent to aid the members of Blue Roses in driving a Super Giant Sanitary Slime created by the death cult back into the sewers. More of the agent was produced through the efforts of Sophie and Nfirea after a plan was devised by the adventurers, Sunlight Scripture to cleanse the sewer of the abomination.[7]

Sophie was still tirelessly working to develop a cure for Gazef Stronoff, conducting various experiments with slimes and Chaos Beasts to produce the necessary decontamination effect that occurred in the Melting Pot. All experiments were met with failure, creating substances called Slime Special Chaos Beast Potage Soup. Though she was glad to be working with her former teacher Fluder Paradyne, even calling him master again despite being equals now.

There were concerns from the Sorcerer Kingdom on staff overworking themselves, leading to the protagonist to be sent to convince the researchers to take better care of themselves. Nfirea though warned that some researchers, like Sophie would rather not waste time taking breaks when they could be working to further their research.

An emergency investigation of the Great Lake needed to be conducted after reports of a strange alleged slime was spotted in the water. Sophie was deemed to be best suited for the field mission, given her specialty. Plus she was seen as the most unlikely person who would reveal too much about the kingdom's operation in the wetlands due to her political disinterest.

At first unwilling to participate, Sophie quickly accepted the task after hearing of the allege slime in the area, before passing out from exhaustion. The researcher was then carried to a carriage which she rode with the adventurers of Darkness to the site. There she donned one of Tsuibayaya's swimsuits to assist her in the waterside environment. Sophie was introduced to Mare who was waiting, and to do a thorough survey, brought out her two pet slimes Sunny and Tully. Shortly later she met with the lizardmen and after hearing how the local fish and lizardmen were feeling more energetic, she assessed that whatever was in the water was not harmful. She affirmed that the alleged slime was to blame and diluting the lake with whatever substance it was imbued with.

Using some slime food as bait and with the help of Mare in locating the slime, which turned out to be a Super Giant Sanitary Slime, it was brought out of hiding and killed. While Sophie wished to capture it for live study, she instead was more interested to learn from her peers that the giant slime may have been mutated after eating the Longevity Nut. She was miffed that Nfirea was aware of the item's existence but failed to inform her, as she wanted to conduct head to the Tob Forest to collect some. However she could not as the tree which bore them had not grown any new nuts and also she once again collapsed out of exhaustion.

When she was back at the institute, Sophie, not bothering to change her attire, pestered Nfirea to hand all his data and samples of the Longevity Nut, believing its secrets could bring answers to the Melting Pot conundrum. She was refused as the director believed the nut was better suited as a medicinal remedy which was needed currently as the children of E-Rantel were undergoing another flu. Sophie relented to the reason, after Nfirea agreed to include on the project as well as promised her she would get his material on the nut if no progress was made on the decontamination. Though she was sternly warned that the nut would not be used for creating any giant slimes. Sophie then resume her work, being allowed to keep her swimsuit as compensation for her services to the Sorcerer Kingdom in the investigation at the Great Lake.[8]

Some days before the protagonist and Slimeko would be heading out to lead a delegation to the Dwarf Kingdom, Sophie shared the results of her discovery to her colleagues at the Institute. The researcher discovered that the conditions in the Melting Pot, may have inadvertently developed a method by which the contaminated essence of creatures affected by the Miasma could be removed. When she informed the news to the protagonist, Sophie planned to experiment and try to replicate the Melting Pot to see if a cure for the Miasma could be synthesized.

While Soi stood guard at the Institute in the absence of the protagonist, Sophie worked with Fluder and Nfirea to figure out how to use the contaminated slimes and Chaos Beasts to create a cure. Their experiment to involved using contaminated slimes to melt a Chaos Beast, however the decontamination effect did not occur. Sophia hitting a wall on how to apply her knowledge, turned to Nfirea as he was an expert on Chaos Beasts. From what she could tell the slimes both normal and contaminated caused a reaction that decontaminated the traces of miasma when they melted the Chaos Beasts. But there were several inconsistencies that did not make sense, and Sophie she felt that they were missing something to make their theory work. Nfirea was the first to realize something, which Sophie noticed and begged the young director of the Institute to share his epiphany.[9]

When the E-Rantel Magic Research Institute came under attack from Chaos Beasts that were invading from several Cracks that appeared in the city, Sophie was bunkered down in the lowest level of the facilities resuming the experiment. She was joined by Nfirea who wanted to see the experiment through. Sophie was amused that the young man's determination was fueled by revenge, something which she ironically lost when the Incident happened though was able to find solace in her slime research. The imperial knights, Nimble Arc Dale Anoch and Leinas Rockbruise had arrived for their protection, their appearance caused Sophie be relieved that their work would be preserved, but it was fleeting as a Spear Chaos Beast teleported into the area, killing her, the researchers and the knights. Despite her death, Sophie's work on the cure for the contamination of the miasma proved to be successfully as it returned Gazef Stronoff to sanity.[10]

Some months after the attack on E-Rantel, Sophie was among the personnel of the Empire whose corpses were recovered and resurrected as courtesy of the Sorcerer Kingdom. During her brief encounter with death, Sophie finally made a breakthrough in the usage of Chaos Stones, using the items to enhance equipment, analogous to players use of Data Crystals. The research was later shared with the Sorcerer Kingdom which Demiurge, Pandora's Actor and the Chief Blacksmith and used to develop equipment that could be worn to allow users to safely enter the "other side" of the Crack for brief periods of time.[11] Said equipment that was the result of Sophie's research was first utilized to allow the Sorcerer Kingdom to launch a rescue mission to retrieve the missing members of the Pleiades.[12]

During the miasma crisis affecting E-Rantel, Sophie and her fellow researchers returned to the city to assist the beleaguered rescue team in decontaminating the surviving populace. Sophie revealed how she accidentally discovered the cure through examining the remnants of the Melting Pot and a plan was concocted by the group to save the infected.

Sophie, Fluder and Nfirea were noted to be insensitive on the issue of using human corpses to make a cure for the contamination. To Sophie the crisis was a perfect way to test her hypothesis and also believed that using the dead was perfectly fine as it reduced waste. This caused Slimeko to question if the trio were really humans to begin with. Sophie hinted about knowing the Sorcerer Kingdom's ulterior motives in the crisis but added that she dare not question the kingdom due to their backing.

Later when Enhela appeared and defeated Sebas, she expressed shock along with the other researchers. She and the others observed the dialogue between the priest and the Nazarick agents, and despite the ambiguity of the situation the alchemist was able to follow the story of hostility between the two parties.[13]

A month later the situation in E-Rantel had greatly improved. At the reconstructed Institute, Sophie greeted the protagonist with his team and informed him of their steady progress in decontaminating all the victims of the miasma. Sophie reported that while it'll take a while to decontaminate everyone who's been detained, she expressed her surprise on the progress so as as almost all the contaminated residents were cured.

Although she attributed their success to being the amount of fresh corpses. But the researcher clearly remembered that on that day of the upheaval, there more contaminated residents than ingredients for the cure. She wanted to ask where the protagonist was finding all the fresh corpses, but her question was in jest as she had no intention to pry into the protagonist's business. Additionally she promised not to say anything what she saw in regards to his interactions with Enhela on that, though warned if she suspicions then others would too eventually. Before the protagonist left, she was gifted a souvenir, an unique slime from the Sorcerer Kingdom, which the researcher accepted with glee.[14]

Abilities and Powers[]

The strongest of Fluder Paradyne's disciples, Sophie can use up to the 4th Tier Magic. While casting her magic, she also utilizes potions in her attacks. Additionally she has managed to tame two sanitary slimes to help her collect data on substances.

Relationships[]

Slimeko[]

Due to her interest in the monster, she appears to have an unhealthy obsession with the Slime.

Saint Clementine[]

The two women are colleagues, as Clementine acts as a middle person for her transactions to acquire new samples for Sophia's research. Though Clementine finds her habits to be strange, and the researcher referring her as her senior, embarrassing the saint who sees Sophia as a good person.

Nfirea Bareare[]

Sophie seems to relish teasing Nfirea, especially noting his radically changed personality after Enri Emmot's death. When she comments him on his genius in his work, it is a mixture of praise and criticism. His now stoic and cold disposition interests her, and she openly states that its hard to believe that he is the "genius boy" she knew in the past.

Soi[]

Sophie appears to have an attraction towards the adventurer. At one point compliment on what beautiful skin she has. While such praise is nothing new to Soi due to her beauty, Sophie's interest in Soi appears to go deeper that just physical attraction. Oddly enough Soi does not appear to be disgusted, but rather intrigued by the attention.
