Remnant (食滓 (レムナント) ) is a game item found in Mass for the Dead.

Description[]

A mineral that is embedded in the debris left by the Devourer of the Nine Worlds which are its empty shells. They can be mined from the debris within the Chaos Zone. The Mercenary Knights have discovered and utilized this mineral and applied its properties in creating their equipment.

Remnant is also also responsible for the creation of Mimics through uncontrolled desires of people trapped within the Chaos Zone or Sea of Possibilities.

As part of their cooperation, the Mercenary Knights explained the properties of Remnant to the Sorcerer Kingdom with an offer of researching the mineral together, with the possibility of the kingdom gaining mining rights of the substance in the knights original world.[1]

After experiment on the item, it was given to Kyuko and Hamsuke to safeguard in the Great Forest of Tob. As for it's use, Momonga left the decision ultimately to the protagonist.[2]

Appearance[]

A amethyst glowing crystal.

Abilities[]

A rare item, that has the property of "responding to and materializing strong desires." In other words, it is an "item that grants wishes."

It appears that direct contact with Remnant is dangerous. According to the Mercenary Knights, the mineral is a medium of some kind of energy in the Womb Corridor. If touched it carelessly in that place, there is a risk that something unexpected would have been created. But it is safe when the crystal is outside the Corridor, allowing it to be physically touched, nothing will happen.

On why Remnant is so dangerous despite it can grant wishes, unless the environment is very calm, it is easy for things to happen in a way that is slightly different from the person's intentions.

For example, if one wants a shield that can withstand any attack, one can certainly get a sturdy shield. However, that shield will be abnormally thick and heavy, making it impossible to carry. If the person who makes the wish has distracting thoughts, they are more likely to make mistakes. If they are not a person who can calm their mind and control even their subconscious, they might be caught out by mistakes.

Hence the item is not recommend to people who are unconsciously harboring destructive impulses or a desire for ruin. But if one clearly wishes for something, they can produce something that goes against the laws of the world.

Under experimentation by the E-Rantel Magic Research Institute, Remnant was found to be a safe to carry while outside the Crack. It has a robustness and stable nature as no change occured from shock or pressure at all and impossible to break. And appears to also be impossible dissolve using a viscous substance

Under the Tier Spell, [All Appraisal Magic Item], Momonga saw that there is no information about the creator, etc., but the spell confirms it is an item used to make wishes come true. Oddly the amount of data is strangely large.[3]

Trivia[]

  • In order to safety transport Remnant a special attaché case is required which Billiophia keeps on handy.
  • The item is what created Aggresiel leg armor.[4]
  • In the past Aggresiel once used a Remnant to wish for a shield. Her words being: "It must be thick enough to withstand any attack, and it must be heavy enough." Such realistic thoughts crossed her mind, leading to her getting an item that nearly crushed her.
  • Momonga compared Remnant to Shooting Star which consumed experience to make wishes manifest whilst the former consumed itself after being used.[2]
