Quarry (採石場) is a tentative name for a rock quarry located in the New World that appears in the Mass for the Dead game.

Background[]

In the aftermath of the incident that saw the appearances of the Cracks and the devastation of the Chaos Beasts and Contaminated Beasts, many refugees throughout the three nations: Re-Estize Kingdom, Baharuth Empire, and Slane Theocracy congregated at the fortress city of E-Rantel. However even with its resources and defenses the city was seriously over-packed and unable to accommodate so many refugees. The city leaders then decided that the only way to solve the issue was to expand the city and build a fourth wall surrounding the city to protect the population. While the materials of the wall could be acquired from nearby rock quarry, such a task would require a massive amount of manpower. Saint Clementine managed to win the hearts of the people of the city and its burdening populace and convinced them to contribute and build the wall.[1]

Mass for the Dead Arc[]

Main article: Mass for the Dead Arc

The protagonist takes a job along with his two comrades Soi and Surako in what was suppose to be a simple guard duty of the mine. When they arrive they learn of its importance to the Kingdom. Since the trio are only copper adventurers they wonder why the soldiers did not hire more qualified people. In fact, it turns out that the soldiers were in desperate need for help as the constant attacked by the Stone Eaters who have been chewing through he rock and attacking the miners have halted their quotas. To the surprise of the three adventures they meet Sebas Tian who apparently had infiltrated the Kingdom as a refugee and rose to the position of the leader of the miners, often saving several from monsters and cave-ins. Now known as Big Brother, the undercover Nazarick agent guided the trio through the mine and explains the conditions. When a night raid happens and more Stone Eaters attack, Sebas Tian and the adventurers fight off the demi-humans. However knowing that he cannot display any more of his true strength less break his cover, the butler feigns injury as is is attacked by the demi-humans. Hearing his call of pain, many of the miners tired of hiding in the barracks rose with their tools to save Sebas Tian having long been inspired by his selflessness. The miners and adventurers manage to drive their attackers out and production of rocks can some resume without delay. Sebast Tian remains at the mine as the protagonist and his team escort a shipment to E-Rantel but promises to see them again.[2]

After a massive force of Chaos Beasts broke free from an underground cave, Zero and Six Arms led a force of workers composed of Foresight, Tenmu, Heavy Masher, and Dragon Hunt to combat them. Knowing they did not have a chance to defeat them all, Zero led the workers to the quarry under the instructions of Emperor Jircniv Rune Farlord El-Nix as he was promised that reinforcements from the Imperial Army would come to help. The knights from the army came, but they stopped at a distance from the battle. Instead they triggered the floor of the quarry to collapse beneath he feet of the workers and Chaos Beasts, letting both groups plummet into a crucible of acid known as the Melting Pot where they dissolved. The only ones to escape the trap were Six Arms and the slaves from Tenmu.[3]

Unfortunately not all Chaos Beasts melted in the trap, and hundreds crawled out and resumed their path towards E-Rantel.[4] Later on, the E-Rantel Magic Research Institute took an interest in the incident of why the trap failed as expected. Sophie Noia who was in charge of the investigation went on to lead a team to collect the slimes in the trap for analysis.[5]

Layout[]

The quarry is described to be as a valley of sort. In addition to that, there appears to be a single watchtower. The topography of the mine changes when work is done. This happens to be due to the constant mining which leads to frequent cave ins. Thus, it is difficult to prevent surprise attacks.

Known Inhabitants[]

No permanent residents live there as most of the miners at the quarry are refugees from E-Rantel and soldiers stationed there to guard the site. However there does seem to be a high number of demi-humans like Stone Eaters.

Trivia[]

  • Apparently the work at the quarry is the most demanding as the mine operates night and day to supply rocks to E-Rantel. Not only does the work can potentially kill due to accident you but also the encroaching monsters as well.
