Porter (ポーター) or Carrier is a generic term used to describe those responsible for carrying food, water and other essential materials for maintaining life in the New World.

Introduction[]

Although it is possible to use magic to create water and food out of thin air, considering the emergency situation such as the death and injury of magic casters, and in a crisis situation, being able to understand human language is also a great advantage over livestock or beasts of burden.

A porter was a position that in an adventurer party, carries their luggage and serves as a replacement for a horse. Many fledgling adventurers started out from porter jobs. At the recommendation of the Adventurer's Guild these porters make acquaintances with other adventurers which will help in the future. Before possible porters accept servicing a team of adventurers, guild representatives appear to inform porters, on the team's status, such as if there are ex-convicts, casualties, or if the party has problems with credibility.[1]

On the first job as a porter, mantles were not recommended and that it was better to wear a cloak. Porters also carried silverware but while convenient, it was optional, and also crockery.[2]

Due to the dangerous profession, accompanying adventurers, porters had metal plates affixed on to their shoiko which can be used as a tower shield. Moreover, porters were recommended to prioritize their own safety in dangerous situations.[3]

Porters were basically the same as ordinary people, and only slightly stronger than the average person., but even with magic it was impossible to completely eliminate the terror that surges from the heart. Responsible workers and adventurers take great care to prevent casualties among the porters in order to prevent bad reviews. In a sense, it was just like the bodyguards who failed to protect the target. In this way, it would be difficult to hire porters in the future. After all, no one wanted to be the next victim and would be difficult for the party to continue to stay in an area.

Despite the dangers, some porters who aim to become adventurers sometimes take on such dangerous work in order to buy equipment to achieve their dream.[4]

The Phantom Ship of Katze Plains Arc[]

Main article: The Phantom Ship of Katze Plains Arc

A quartet of porters accompanied the worker team of Fist, along with a inspector from the Free City of Vadis on an undead subjugation into the Katze Plains. The prters were placed in the middle of the formation. Together the party head towards Broken Tower 1 to clear up the undead. On the journey, at the edge of the Katze Plains one of the workers detected undead presences. Whilst the workers prepared for battle, the porters placed the luggage in a circle, and then hid behind them to form a formation, taking out iron plates to shield themselves with the supervisor in the center. Six Grave Dead soon appeared from the ground. After they were defeated by the workers, porters were left in respectful awe of the workers and the supervisor made a note of the kills before the party moved on towards Broken Tower 1.[4]

When the undead subjugation team approached the Broken Tower, the workers sensed something was amiss when they saw that neither flags of the tower's occupancy and undead danger were raised. Whilst Envario sent a wolf summon to investigate the premises, Candelon Gaelian and Dietz Elderwood moved to protect the porters. After Fist decided to approach the Broken Tower, the porters followed the workers, advancing in a circle around the hill where it was situated.

Once all the undead were not in the vicinity, they and the Inspector were directed to head inside the tower and take shelter while the workers dealt in burying the dead.[5] When three Skeletal Dragons appeared to attack the Broken Tower and the workers, salvation came from Darkness led by Momon, the porters who were still hiding in the tower were then called out by the workers as it was now safe. They collected the luggage and the prepared to return to Vadis with Fist.[6]

Trivia[]

  • In the Web Novel, according to Gignal Elshy, he expected Theo who had job as a porter in the past to have become a warrior before rising to a magic caster.[7]
  • In Vadis, there is a consensus among the people who set foot on the Katz Plains, that is, if they do not have the ability to control beasts, they will definitely hire human porters.[4]
