Plans Are Illusions, Ten Thousand Vows (策は幻、万回の誓い) is a game event in Mass for the Dead that was released on March 31, 2025 to April 14, 2025.
Background[]
With the possibility of an attack from a foreign enemy on the rise, Nazarick is checking the safety of all areas that are under its control. Meanwhile, Momonga, having checked the defense network made of Demonic Trees, suggests holding a cherry blossom viewing there. But what is his true intention...?[1]
Incident[]
At Carne Village, sundown was ending. Three figures were spotted at the village's ruins. The three men are revealed to be thieves looking to see if any valuables were left by the villagers Incident with the Crack. Some of the thieves doubt there is anything given how shabby the homes are, but one of the thieves is insistent that there is a treasure hidden somewhere, and that his information is reliable. Apparently a certain bandit was caught recently, but before he was caught, he claimed he hid all the gold and silver treasures he stole in Carne Village, in preparation for his release.
Though when asked about that bandit's competence given that he was caught, one of the thieves pointed out that the bandit had the sense to know he was being pursued , not many people who are arrested ever realize that they are being investigated and prepare for a contingency. As where this rumor came from, it was being passed around adventurers. That there is a hut in Carne Village, with the treasure buried in the basement, but was left behind as there weren't enough people to carry it out.
Since it came from people who could walk proudly in the day, it for sure without any lies. And from what is heard, it looks like the Contaminated Beasts gather in the area that makes it impossible for newly minted weak adventurers who have been gathering in E-Rantel to trespass. All more fortunate for the thieves as the adventurers with a certain level of strength have been busy guarding the city against the threat of the Mimics, Chaos Beasts that could take the form of humans. Despite the dangers outside the city the thieves believe they can take whatever they face.
One of the thieves then spots a suspicious looking hut situated near the forest. The trio then approach thinking it might be the location of the treasure, However they find three strange looking treants in the area. It's determined that since humans have left the area, monsters have moved into the village. Undeterred, the thieves attack the treants, not willing to give up. They find that the treants are much stronger than expected, forcing the thieves to rely on magic items to support themselves. Amid the angry shouts of the bandits, Aura Bella Fiora and Hamsuke watch the fight from the depths of the forest. Aura takes in the sight with amusement, while the hamster asks if it is alright if they do nothing. The dark elf tells her that their job for now is to observe and see how the bandits do. The fight with the treants gets more intense as a Supreme Odor Flower comes and joins the fray much to the dismay of the bandits who throw themselves back into the fight with even more determination.
While Aura and Hamsuke were observing the treants and others' battle near Carne Village, in a certain underground space, Momonga is accompanied by Mare Bello Fiore and Demiurge as he visits the Defense Tree. Momonga while studying the area comments that it has been awhile before addressing the Defense Tree on how it has been. Though the tree does not speak, Demiurge interprets the plant is shaking its leaves in joy, at being personally greeted by the Supreme Being. Mare chimes in agreeing that being able to speak to Momonga couldn't be better. Momonga though feels that the plant is actually shaking in fear.
After all, previously when Nazarick celebrated the completion of the defense network, Demiurge had the Demonic Tree cut to prepare materials to craft a table. From Demiurge's twisted view of the act the tree trembled with joy when it offered a piece of itself to Momonga. Momonga suspects it was more likely that the Floor Guardian overpowered the tree with brute force. But decides not to bother too much into the details as the Defense Tree has the ability to control the trees in the area and create a defense network outside Nazarick. It's a perfect plan that doesn't waste any of Nazarick's resources, and while it's a bit of a drastic measure, if it gets the tree to obey it's for the best.
Still Momonga comments that the Defense Tree doesn't appear to be trembling with joy, bring both Demiurge and Mare looking alarmed. They apologize for this, planning to "educate" the arrogant tree some more. Demiurge then commands it to bow it's trunk. It does so, but the result is deemed too slow by the Floor Guardians, finding it being disrespectful to Momonga. Although the tree isn't showing the same level of rebellious attitude back when it first came under the banner of Nazarick, Demiurge can see that it can't help be cocky. The tree's previous rebellious behavior is news to Momonga who then asks Demiurge to elaborate.
Demiurge reveals that before he first presented the tree to Momonga, he, Aura and some others did some training with it. In it's first orders the tree was told to bow, though initially was confused by the direction. But after Demiurge explicitly told it to prostate itself, using it's entire body to express its remorse for its previous act of rebellion, it complied. Even so Aura noted that the tree while it did follow the orders, it did so only reluctantly. Demiurge then openly suggested that they give the tree the gift of the cold from Cocytus, after which the tree finally seemed to understand the balance of power in the relationship with its new masters. Thanks to it being tamed, Demiurge was able to harvest some wood from the tree. Now Demiurge is annoyed that the tree still does not understand obedience.
Mare asks if they should call Cocytus, as before when they were training the tree they were recently resurrected and did no have much power as they do currently. The 7th Floor Guardian thinks that may be a good idea as it would be a good opportunity to teach the tree that the power of the defensive trees is no more than a flea in the eyes of the Floor Guardians. Mare affirms Demiurge is right as if the tree underestimate the Floor Guardians it would be shameful to Momonga who is the strongest. Now that Demiurge reflects on the Defense Tree's behavior, he noticed that the tree lacked explicit joy when it received his name.
Back then Momonga had praised to Demiurge that the defense network plan for the area, and without exaggeration claimed it was perfect. Demiurge is happy by the praise, though believes that the power of the Parent Tree of the Supreme Tree only reaches so far, and that there could be discussions on improvement with Albedo and Pandora's Actor. While they were on the subject, Momonga asks if they could do change the name of the tree to something else other than Parent Tree of the Supreme Tree. The name stems from it being the progenitor of the Supreme Tree used in the Supreme Flower Viewing, however Demiurge also wonders what a more appropriate name would be. Momonga considers a German name of Muttie Baum, which he looked up previously but decides not to bring it up to Demiurge. Momonga desires a name that matches the tree's job title better. In his mind ideas such as Lookout Wood, Cave Woody are tried but they just don't fit, until finally he settles for the name of Defense Tree as it is easy to understand. Then and there Momonga bequeaths the plant monster its new name which the tree responded in acceptance.
In the present, Demiurge saw it was a honor that Momonga had given the plant monster a name. Though finds the plant's appreciation to be lacking which Mare agrees. Momonga tries to calm down, when the Defense Tree began shaking somewhat hesitantly. Mare interprets that the Defense Tree has noticed that the Control Treants under its thrall have eliminated the intruders on the surface. Additional confirmation is received by Mare through a [Message] from Aura via their necklaces, who tells her brother that the treants have wiped out the bandits. Mare relays that he knows as the Defense Tree has sensed their elimination. Aura the declares that their experiment has been a success then. Mare then ends the [Message] to report this to Momonga and to let Aura handle the clean up of the bodies.
Momonga is then told that the defense network around Nazarick, controlled by the Defense Tree and the Controlled Treants is operating smoothly. The news is taken with relief by Demiurge as recently there have been a lot of unexpected events, such as visitors from another world and the Mimics. With the network in place they can now confirm the safety of one more place under Nazarick's control. Now that the experiment is out of the way, Demiurge wants to talk to the Defense Tree on it attitude. Mare considers that it needs some punishment much to the tree's apprehension.
It is spared any retaliation from Momonga, as he is satisfied with its subservience and level of obedience it ha shown to Demiurge. Mare still feels that they could be spoiling the tree, given it lives in the best place. The soil around the Defense Tree is revealed to be of very good quality, and they previously thoroughly eradicated the predatory worms that have a negative effect on the roots. Demiurge concurs with Mare, as the home they provided to the Defense Tree is a much better environment from where it was originally. Yet the demon sees not a single bit of gratitude from the tree. To prove his point the tree's trunk has grown well, its leaves are red and shiny and its bark is in good condition from it being treated so well.
Momonga though argues that the Defense Tree is remains stuck in the dark cavern forever. And with it controlling the treants, and constantly monitoring the defense network for Nazarick, it can be understandable that it would get depressed. This puzzles Mare as how can the tree be depressed, finding that there's no greater honor than being able to play a part in the defense of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Mare then asks if the Defense Tree is depressed or happy, only for the tree to tremble in fear. Demiurge though stared at the Defense Tree for awhile, neither criticizing it any further, musing it on its depression.[2]
Later in Momonga's personal bath, the undead is receiving a cleaning from his trusted bathing attendant, Miyoshi. The Overlord enjoys the slime's cleaning, but his mind is drawn to Demiurge and Mare's lack of empathy to the Defense Tree's dejection or rather it's loss of energy. He recalls the moment when he blurted that "It doesn't seem happy." Frankly Momonga doesn't blame the plant monster poor reaction as it is being controlled like a subordinate, lives in a dimly lit place while managing the treants spread out over an area all the time. If Momonga was in its place, he would want to just be on the surface, basking in the sunlight, listening to the birds singing and feeling the wind and rain freely.
Being considerate, Momonga asks Miyoshi if the slime sometimes go outside and sunbathe. Though from the slime's response Momonga deduces that Miyoshi is particularly interested in sunbathing. Even so the Overlord asks Miyoshi if that there is anything he would like to do during his break, to just ask him. Momoga doubts Miyoshi will take up on the offer, as the slime is like the boss of his personal baths. And according to Foire and Éclair Éklair Éklare does his cleaning job exquisitely as the pair come to inspect the premises.
Momonga mind shifts back to the Defense Tree, remembering that the plant monster has been the backbone for Nazarick's defense network for a long time, but notes it's position is analogous to a mid-level employee who can't be helped by its juniors. Miyoshi is lost on what Momonga is actually talking about, but the undead tells him to pay him no mind. Regardless Momonga feels for the Defense Tree as it must be stressful to be doing constant surveillance work alone in a dark room and scared of his superior Demiurge. Momonga keeps reminding himself that the people in Nazarick who do not seek rewards are a special case. Mostly he does not want to become a king managing a black company who exploits those under his rule unreasonably.
This in mind his mind takes him to a time in YGGDRASIL's heyday, in the Canteen, where he met Herohero with Solution Epsilon in a Waitress Bunny costume. Momonga noted his friend looked exhausted, which the slime player admits that he's been feeling like he's been at his limit this week to the point he can't even count how many days there are in a week. Momonga tells him it's seven, which Herohero apologizes for complaining about something so dumb. His undead friend asks what is the deal with Solution. Herohero explains that he dressed Solution up as a way to relax, though Momonga is more interested by the fact Herohero has collected the equipment.
Even now Momonga can remember Herohero's woes, and worries he might be doing the same to his subordinates. The only problem in address the Defense Tree's conditions is that it's outside of Nazarick, so he can't go and see it that often. But since it's in the care of Demiurge and his associates there's no need to worry about any real harm, as Mare said the plant monster's leaves were a vibrant red and a sight to behold. An idea then strikes Momonga, realizing that it would a sight worth seeing. The Sorcerer King then made a decision in his mind and got out of the bath. Miyoshi watching his master leave, shone proudly in having completed the day's work brilliantly.
In E-Rantel, the key location of the Quadripartite Alliance, in a corner of the city laid a mansion, where the protagonist, Narberal and Solution gathered. The mansion was arranged by Mayor Panasolei Gruze Day Rettenmaier as a suitable place of residence for the Territory Guardian. The occupants the mansion, find the residence quite well made, allowing them to move easier, as opposed toe entering and leaving their usual inn room, mindful of the inn's occupants and careful of eavesdropping. Now they can allow their subordinates to provide security and can have detailed discussions without having to return to Nazarick.
The trio then discuss the success of their experiment, luring the bandits to Carne Village on a rumor of hidden treasure, before being captured. It's a easy and convenient new strategy of eliminating outlaws that infest E-Rantel, and at the same time check on Nazarick's defense network. This is all out of preparedness, as it would be a problem if the ant's nest that is E-Rantel was destroyed as Nazarick intends to sacrifice it to remove Nazarick as a target for the Devourer of the Nine Worlds.
The protagonist still like to conduct more tests on the operation of the Control Treats a few more time. So far the trio discuss that they have checked on security of the Cracks in the Azerlisia Mountains as well as the mine and isolated island, even if the latter two are related to the Cracks. But the homunculus wishes to make sure that the defense of Nazarick is done properly. A knock comes at the door, and Doppel-Slimeko enters with a [Message] from Momonga for them to return to Nazarick. Narberal thinks that there is a looming problem back at the dungeon, though Doppel-Slimeko replies that their liege sounded oddly cheerful. Solution and Narberal remain behind with the intent to spread more rumors of treasure at the bars and such. Both the portagonist and Doppel-Slimeko then hurry back to Nazarick.[3]
At the Round Table Room, on the 9th Floor of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, the Floor Guardians are summoned by Momonga along with the protagonist and Doppel-Slimeko. Momonga declares his intent to go for a cherry blossom viewing for the first time in a while. The remembers having one after he first inspected Nazarick's defense network, and also doubled as an unveiling ceremony. For this occasion, they can celebrate the continued precision of the defense network
Demiurge questions why they would celebrating the unchanging precision of the defense network. To which Momonga states by building and maintaining a defense network that doesn't require the use of Nazarick's resources it itself is a valuable asset to Nazarick. Of course, the cherry blossom viewing event will also be a reward for "everyone." In this speech Momonga hopes he was able to convey how important the role of the Defense Tree is to Nazarick. The "everyone" he wants to thank includes the Defense Tree, but even so, the NPCs might say they're unnecessary. And probably think of Defensive Tree as nothing more than a spider that build webs in the garden trees. They get rid of pests, but they're not something to be thankful for, or that they don't need to be bothered. While that can't be helped, but if they talk in front of the Defense Tree about how useful the defense network is to Nazarick, it should be a roundabout way of praising it.
This brings to mind some words Blue Planet who told Momonga that plants grow better if you praise them. Of course, the Overlord gives thanks to the splendid defense network devised by the three smartest people in Nazarick - Albedo, Demiurge, and Pandora's Actor. While Demiurge feels honored, he has some concerns for this master, regarding the cherry blossom viewing, he’s afraid there is more to it than just being a token of appreciation. Albedo wonders what more could the cherry blossom viewing be than just a consolation to them.
Momonga put on the spot then tries to say in advance that he has no intention of blaming them or anything, and this is merely to ensure that their future plans proceed smoothly, but——-during this cherry blossom viewing, he would like to also use this opportunity to thank the Defense Tree. This is as expected from Demiurge and the protagonist. The homunculus admits that those in Nazarick tend to have little interest in those outside of it, but in order to maintain their defense network and keep the Defense Tree in top condition, they need its support.
Momonga agrees as since the work of the Defense Tree has lightened the burden on them, then that is well worth the reward as it has been submissive to Nazarick and fulfilled its role in maintaining the defense network. At first Shalltear and Albedo protest, but Aura pitches in that what Monga says is true and should be grateful for its help in defending the outside world when they still hadn't fully regained their strength. On this Mare admits that's true as he was even less back then than he is now.
Cocytus adds that not necessary to say that one can work as a Nazarick employee and have fun. The chimes of agreement are follows by Albedo in that from Momonga's standpoint, rewarding the good and punishing the bad, it may be natural to praise the Defense Tree for its work and celebrate it at a cherry blossom viewing party. To her that's what matter. Although Shalltear comments that some of them appear to be under some terrible misunderstanding, but question if they should be forgiven by some pitiful look on their faces. To which Albedo responds onlt the weakest dog barks the loudest. The snide comment causes the two women to glare at each other, before Aura breaks up the argument as the focus of the meeting is on the Defense Tree. Momoga is glad Aura is on the same page, worried that someone would object, but looks like his honesty has gotten through them.
The protagonist comments at the start the Defense Tree was treated as just as another monster, but it has been performing beneficial activities for Nazarick for a long time now. So concern for its well being by Mononga is only natural. Shalltear volunteers to decorate the banquet hall beautifully, with the ceiling so high, she'll fly over and add some color. Mare thinks to give the tree some more discipline so that it'll be worthy of being a member of Nazarick. The sentiment of discipline is shared by Albedo, but reminds everyone they mustn't forget the reward aspect.
Which Aura jokes to saying "No whip, just classroom training!" Mare then alters his plan to allow the plant to sunbathe and asks Momonga if he can take it to the 6th Floor. Momonga is all for the idea. After all they once carried the corpse of its child, the Evil Tree, to the 6th Floor and had a cherry blossom viewing there. However, tells the elf to please be aware that the Defense Tree cannot leave its defense network for long periods of time. To which Mare agrees to take it for a little walk after the cherry blossom viewing. By the way, he mentions having fond memories of when they all had cherry blossom viewing on the 6th Floor.
Shalltear recalls Momonga then setting the stage for the cherry blossom viewing. At the start of the event a grand cherry blossom viewing party was held, involving the entirety of Nazarick, where Demiurge invited Momonga to sit on a homemade throne he prepared for the occasion. Momonga with reluctance sits on the throne, being made of human bones, while the demon boasts on its construction.
Momonga despite being uncomfortable just continues to praise the item, hiding his disgust. Albedo then comes over to inform him that in order to avoid disruption to the work schedule, they have called in the Pleiades as the first group, as they will be working in shifts. Momonga is fine with that as he said before to don't forget to let everyone know that this even a free-for-all. Before Albedo can go on, Shaltear interjects herself, offering her to entertain Momonga since he is unable to eat any of the food.
Albedo objects to this finding Shalltear to be acting disrespectful. Though the vampire stands her ground, telling the demon to attend to the Pleiades. Seeing she has to put up with her rival, Albedo through gritted teeth asks Sebas Tian what food he recommends. Sebas Tian not missing a beat offers Momonga a dish with a gorgeous fragrance that his master will enjoy. Lupusregina soon arrives, just having returned from her inspection of the Baharuth Empire, gaining permission from Yuri Alpha to return. CZ alongside her finds working as a contractor for the Empire isn't such a bad idea, complimenting Momonga on the idea. Momonga suffering under the feuding Floor Guardians, tries to excuse himself, but neither woman appears to relent to the other to have Momonga for themselves.
Even in the present, Shalltear still found the time so frustrating. Albedo though accuses that it would have been enjoyable if she left Momonga's side first and then she would have done the same. They share another glare. Cocytus berates them for bickering especially in the presence of their superiors. For now Momonga wants to get the preparations going for the cherry blossom viewing. Before Momonga can nominate someone to be in charge, Albedo volunteers. As she is the head of the Guardians, she regrets that she has not been considerate enough to her subordinates. Thus she would like to be given a chance to make up for this. Momonga is willing to accept this if no one disagrees. To his amazement, Cocytus raises his hand, wishing to take care of the event planning as well. It is rare for Cocytus to take the initiative. To Cocytus as he is the person who cut down the Defensive Tree, he should be the one who must tell it is the last of its kind. Momonga is confused by this statement, before Demiurge requests that since he also lent a hand in cutting down the tree he would also like to run for the position in order to further improve the defense network. Seeing this Momonga then has all three of them work together and proceed with the preparations for the cherry blossom viewing, looking forward to it being a fun party.
And so, Momonga left the Round Table Room ahead of everyone else. Once he was gone, Albedo wants to start coordinating the preparations for the cherry blossom viewing. She plans on contacting Pestonya about the food for the cherry blossom viewing. Under the direction of the Head Chef, she'll have the general maids prepare dishes using ingredients that don't have buff effects. Since it's a cherry blossom viewing, they will want everything to be colorful. After the preparations are complete, Demiurge states that the maids will take turns participating in the banquet at the cherry blossom viewing venue, serving food and taking care of Momonga. For this event it's important to show them how much fun they are having, so Momonga can have fun. SO the demon advises to have them work carefully so that Momonga doesn't have to worry.
In that case, Albedo thinks it would be best if the Pleiades would also participate to support them. Aura asks if she can go ahead to prepare the plan. To which Albedo responds in the affirmative and to please keep in touch so that there are no gaps in your work while she makes the necessary arrangements. Aura then takes Mare to the 6th Floor to the Crack to take care of the Chaos Beasts that will appear. As for Shalltear she will arrange for security by the Vampire Brides to which Demiurge offers the vampire to use his subordinates to guard the floor. After the dark elves and vampire leave, the protagonist being left with Demiurge and Albedo offers to contribute. Albedo is grateful for the offer, but declines, asking about the status of E-Rantel under his charge. For now the city has become a puppet state, as reported by the Territory Guardian, so he can leave most of the city's affairs to the humans. Still he offers for his peers to ask him if they need anything.
Albedo takes him on that offer, wishing for him to accompany her to Ashurbanipal later as she would like to find out more about cherry blossom viewing. Demiurge asks what Cocytus plans to do, if he would teach Homare? Cocytus thinks it may be a bit disrespectful, but recalling that Momonga was irritated when he asked for the Defense Tree's consolation he has no objection to praising its achievements, but speaking of the peace of mind of the Defense Tree...its fighting power, Cocytus thinks that releasing that power is crucial.
Albedo understands that Cocytus wishes to letting out his fighting power and conduct a mock battle? But Defense Tree is now a part of Nazarick's defense network, having a battle could damage it. Cocytus understands, and while he doesn't know if this is the exact opposite of the gratitude Momonga offered the tree there is thing one thing. Demiurge guesses Cocytus being a warrior who has actually crossed swords with the Defense Tree, he thought that this would also be a form of consolation. Demiurge agrees with what Cocytus is planning as it should be made clear in advance to the tree that this venue is not because they are good friends or to give Cocytus a chance to shine, or for any other personal reasons. Albedo permits his addition to the event planning, after all, their liege has approved his participation.
However, since this is a cherry blossom viewing party after all, it would be unrefined to just let the Defense Tree run wild, so Demiurge suggests to take proper safety measures. Albedo agrees as there will be general maids at the event, so fighting without any purpose would be dangerous. But it's only to relieve the Defense Tree's lack of exercise...and on top of that, if they can show the Defense Tree the greatness of Nazarick then all the better.
As Albedo said before, the protagonist underlines there will be "no rules" at the cherry blossom viewing party, so he thinks they might be able to get permission for a little chaos. Demiurge is then assigned by Albedo to take care of security. Cocytus and the protagonist are asked by Albedo to come with her to do some research so that they can create a plan with her one that will satisfy Momonga. The trio then leave to head to the library.
At the 6th Floor in the forest where a Crack is situated, Mare muses to his sister that the previous cherry blossom viewing was fun, and hopes this upcoming one will be fun too. Aura hopes so too, though notes that this time it will be to thank the Defense Tree. But is more focused on looking forward to see Momonga enjoy it.
Mare though aspires to be able to sit on Momonga's lap while eating a meal. Aura tells him to avoid that, as he will get caught in a fight between Albedo and Shalltear. The female dark elf comments Cocytus seems more serious, and wonders what he could be planning for the event. Both dark elves decide to finish cleaning up the Chaos Beasts so they can join in the cherry blossom viewing.[4]
Later at Ashurbanipal, amongst the turning of pages, Albedo finds the definition of Hanami or flower viewing, which is a party to enjoy the beauty of blossoming trees. According to her information it also seems to have been an element of plant worship, as a way of worshiping gods. And that the most common plant used for flower viewing is the cherry blossom. Said plant takes less than two weeks for the petals to fall from blooming. The sight of the petals falling all at once is called "sakurafubuki" (cherry blossom snowstorm), and is an analogy to the transience of human life.
Cocytus muses the power of a saying "be merciful and do not pity what is lost." He too, recalls many things during the blizzard on the 5th Floor, in other words, "mononohare" (the things that are lost). In that regard the protagonist wonders if this the pathos of things? And wonders if Momonga is also aware of the transience of life. Albedo believes that there must be some meaning behind intentionally holding a "flower viewing" in this situation where they should be preparing for attacks, such as visitors from another world and Mimics. Cocytus then shows Albedo a document. It's a description of a military commander who went to a cherry blossom viewing party. A grand banquet was held with 5,000 military commanders in attendance. Only the wives and maids of the commanders were gathered...and 700 cherry trees were transplanted just for this one-day event. Albedo comments that the event was quite a large scale and seems to have a different approach to what they are planning.
Cocytus shows another description of the event. Where some warlords dressed up in costumes and put on skits, much to the amusement of everyone around them. This is what is referred to as "free-for-all rules". For example, how about he show off his sword skills in a skit and having a mock battle with the Defense Tree. Albedo doubts that simply holding a mock battle would be appropriate for a celebration, but if it were staged as a theatrical performance then maybe. The protagonist thinks something like that will be something everyone can enjoy. If there are performances, even Momonga, who can't eat or drink, won't get bored.
Albedo has some doubts about whether they can demonstrate the greatness of Nazarick to the Defense Tree. With Cocytus' current strength, it would be too overwhelming for the Defense Tree, so maybe a free-for-all is a good thing or a bad thing. The protagonist asks for elaboration, to which Albedo explains that "Bureiko" means a party where all ranks are ignored. So she wonder if it's okay to ignore social status when showing the Defense Tree the greatness of Nazarick. Previously, the child of the Defense Tree, the Demon Tree, had died, and it was just left it as a "tree" for fun. The conditions are completely different this time now. Cocytus thinks that it is just something Momonga can suggest, so maybe they should give it a little more thought and accept it. The group agrees that some thought needs to be put in for the event. Cocytus agrees and walks out of the library to think.
He ends up at the Bar, with Shalltear and Demiurge where he tells them the discussion at the library. Demiurge thinks it's a great idea, turning the mock battle into a skit and elevating it into a performance. Shalltear is all for the idea as it could be quite interesting. Cocytus warns that Albedo fears and doubts about showing the greatness of Nazarik to the Defense Tree. However, Cocytus finds while it's still intimidating, it's not going to change the plan. Demiurge would like to cooperate as much as he can, but can't as he is am an object of fear to the Defense Tree. Cocytus having always felt the greatness of Nazarick, wants to express that well and show it to the tree, but he's not sure if he can come up with a good idea.
As an adventurer named Shall, Shalltear began to visit human towns, and every time she came into contact with the shabby things outside, which reminded of how wonderful Nazarick is. But adds it must be difficult to get such a tiny creature to understand this. After all, an ant cannot reach the stars in the night sky. Cocytus thinks it is still possible to look up at the sky. Shalltear wishes him luck as she has to go defeat the Chaos Beasts in the Throne Room. The vampire and her Vampire Brides exit the bar. While on the 9th Floor corridor, she asks her attendants if they were in charge of demonstratig to the Defense Tree the greatness of Nazarick, how would they do so?
The Vampire Brides suggests they surround the tree with all the plant-type monsters in Nazarick, to show it that they have so many of its kind under the command of Nazarick. That's quite a novel perspective to Shalltear. However, it seems like it would be a bit of a pain to have a large group of people roaming the outside of Nazarick. The second Vampire Bride, suggests she would ask Mare to maximize the nutritional value of the soil around the Defense Tree.
Though Shalltear feels that the quality of the soil seems to be perfect already. To her if one still can't appreciate the greatness of Nazarick, then one can only say that their an ant that can't reach the stars. The Vampire Brides unfortunately can't say anymore. They then ask what method Shalltearwould you take? The Floor Guardian can't say only musing Yuri thinks punching is the best thing to do. So, in a way, she agree with Cocytus about the mock battle with the Defense Tree.
Albedo soon approaches the vampires, checking to see Shalltear on her way to the Throne Room. She tells Shalltear she was one her way to consult with Sebas Tian about his outfit that he will wear at the cherry blossom viewing. On that Shalltear asks if the Overseer Guardian is planning on having him dressed for a cherry blossom viewing. Knowing Sebas, if he was dressed as usual he would probably just serve instead of enjoying the banquet. Since Momonga intended to use this as a way to reward them, Albedo wants people to participate with the mindset that they are there to enjoy cherry blossom viewing, rather than thinking that they are there to serve. Albedo then head off leaving Shalltear and her vampires to enter the Lemegeton and prepare to cull the Chaos Beasts.
During the preparations for the cherry blossom viewing, Cocytus visited the lizardman settlement. During the inspection of the defense network, several human thugs entered the forest. Since this was expected, the lizardmen were advised not to enter the forest for non-urgent matters. However, the reason given was vague, such as a defense inspection. Cocytus informs the "confused men" were safely found, having entered the forest carelessly, so the lizardmen ere free to go into the forest. Zaryusu thanks information, but admits that not many lizardmen go deep into the forest anyway. The same is said by Zenberu, who has gotten really used to how good the village has developed so doesn't feel like going anywhere else now. This is all thanks to Cocytus' master as now the lizardmen are living a happy life.
Cocytus then decides to take the opportunity to hear from the lizardmen travelers, say if they want to tell others the good things about their tribe, how would they talk about it? After hearing how Shalltear said that she went to a human town and was ruminating on the wonderfulness of Nazarick. However, he doubts even small creatures can understand Nazarick's glory. Though he figures this may not be something that should be understood, meaning that other people have different values. If so, the opinions of those who have different values from those of the Nazaricks are worth listening to.
Zaryusu ruminates on how to convey the goodness of his tribe. Of course to him, it's important to show one's current strength, but that's only possible because of what his ancestors gave back. For example, he's been saved many times by one of the treasures passed down by his tribe, Frost Pain. So he thinks he will pass on that tradition. Zenberu is also grateful to his ancestors. No matter how one has lived your life, one can always turns to their parents and ancestors. Even if one was born in a completely different place, or had terrible parents, there's always something in common to talk about.
Cocytus considered there words, especially on a common topic...of ancestral power. For the Floor Guardians, the do not have a mother who gave birth to them or a bloodline that continues to flow from their veins. However, they are more proud than anything else, and they think of their creators as their parents. From them questions like "Who I am, where I came from, and what kind of existence I have", are all essential to telling the story. After all, without the Supreme Beings, the wonder of Nazarick cannot be described. Cocytus thanks the lizardmen as their talk was extremely informative. Zaryusu offers that the lizardmen could tell others about the greatness of the Sorcerer Kingdom, even offering to accompany the Floor Guardian. However their words were enough for Cocytus. For now Cocytus bids them goodbye but not before telling the lizardmen to stay safe.
After returning from the lizardman settlement, Cocytus makes a proposal to Albedo and the others in Momonga's study, about the content of the mock battle to be held at the cherry blossom viewing party. Demiurge can't have thought of anything better, as does the protagonist. Cocytus is relieved they approved as he thought the idea was a bit cruel, but as a member of Nazarick he maintains it is the best idea. Albedo at first is hesitant but finally agrees that she would love to go forward with the plan. The Overseer then hurried to inform Momonga, with everyone laughing and reminiscing about their cherry blossom viewing parties.[5]
At the Round Table Room, Albedo, Cocytus, Demiurge, and the protagonist tell Momonga about the plans for a mock battle that at the cherry blossom viewing party and the details. Momonga finds a mock battle with a Defense Tree at a cherry blossom viewing party as well as a sword fight in the image of a creator to be intriguing. Considering the reward for the Defense Tree first and foremost, Albedo underscores that the mock battle is effective in terms of relieving the lack of exercise it needs, and also in terms of letting it learn about Homare when it is necessary to obey the strong. And that the greatness of Nazarick could not be conveyed without the Supreme Beings.
Albedo is cheerful on this, as it's amazing that it was all Cocytus's idea. And commends the Floor Guardian for thinking it through. Indeed Momonga is looking forward to seeing how everyone sees through the eyes of the Guardians. Since Albedo and Demiurge seem to be in favor of it, he has high hopes for this show. This brings to mind a flashback, where Momonga was with Ulbert and Peroroncino at the mausoleum, longing if they were to recreate that conversation, that thing he did, or the outfit he was wearing then...he probably wouldn't be able to function as a ruler anymore. Thus it makes him conscientious of what Albedo, Demiurge and Cocytus might think if they knew his real personality. This cause him emotional distress by just thinking of this, and swears that he will never become a shameful ruler. From now on too, he will perform my role as a ruler perfectly. Without any idea of Momonga's sudden decision, the Guardians began preparations for the cherry blossom viewing.
At the Canteen, Albedo in her maid outfit, directs Pestonya, Cixous and Foire to bring the food to the underground cavern, and no to be too concerned about finishing the dishes as it will be better to add the sauce over there so as not to ruin the beauty. Later at the Defense Tree's lair, a banquet has been prepared with Fith lighting the candles for decoration and Lumière setting the plates in perfect order. While the tables are arranged and set with tablecloths by Shalltear and her Vampire Brides.
In the Pleiades room, Narberal and Solution returns from E-Rantel. Doppel-Slimeko is also with them, but nervous about being given entry into the maids' room. Lupusregina and CZ in their worker gear soon arrive and want to hurry to change clothes. Yuri is there to greet them, and allows Doppel-Slimeko to change as well. Entoma present, having been waiting and dressed for the cherry blossom viewing. The women soon dress in yukatas. Solution admires her costume, while Doppel-Slimeko stunned at her own attire, wonder aloud if it is really okay to wear it, since this was originally equipment made to order for Slimeko. Since wearing the yukatas is an order from Albedo to all of them, including Sebas it should be fine. Though tells the others to not to be too enthusiastic about serving, but to focus more on enjoying the cherry blossom viewing. CZ denotes that they want a festive atmosphere. And Entoma reminds her "little sister" to not get too excited. CZ retorts that the one who's having the most fun is Entoma, who she insists the little sister.
Narberal seeing this asks Lupusreina if they should step in before it becomes a problem, but Lupusregina is having her own drama, asking why she could not wear a cute yukata like the rest of the sisters. Yuri tells Lupusregina that she has the role of beating the drum at the beginning of the performance. In fact she is jealous but promises to help instruct her on the beat of the drum. Lupusregina seeing that it can't be helped, tells everyone to take a break and enjoy themselves. As for her she'll be busy with her duties. CZ and Entoma find it a bit unfair, but Yuri ushers the rest of the Pleiades to the cherry blossom viewing site where the Defense Tree awaits. With that, all the participants were ready and hurried off to the cherry blossom viewing venue.
At the banquet of the cherry blossom viewing, the event is in full swing. Aura at a food table is perusing what dish to eat next. Mare recommends the sakuramochi and trifle as they were delicious. The female dark elf though wants something salty not sweet, before contenting herself with some juicy meat. Momonga observing the party finds that the cavern is really well decorated. Even though it's an underground space, it feels like he's under the night sky, finding it a wonderful decoration that makes the most of the high ceiling. Privately he finds his praise a bit cheesy. He then goes to meet the person in charge of decorations, Shalltear telling her a job well done. The Floor Guardian accepts the praise as she tried her best to make Momonga satisfied. And then offers herself to Momonga without any reservations. Momonga does not know what to say, but knows that this "free-for-all" offer doesn't mean that touching is OK.
Albedo comes over and thankfully directs Shalltear to feel free to sit on a far away chair over to take a break as she must have done a lot of work to prepare. Through gritted teeth, Shalltear suggests that Albedo hurry up and get changed as she has a show to start soon. Albedo agrees leaving to get Cocytus. That being enough, Momonga goes and see if everyone's having fun. Cocytus who is standing with Demiurge, excuses himself as he will be changing. Demiurge takes notice that Sebas is wearing his yukata and asks why he is wearing one. The butler explains that the order was to come dressed to enjoy the cherry blossom viewing, not just as a servant. So Sebas asks why is the demon wearing a yukata? Demiurge explains that he is going to be the host of the Cocytus and Albedo show after this, so he came dressed appropriately for that. Demiurge thought it would kill the fun if he came dressed in his usual gear.
Momonga goes over to see Fith, Foire, Lumiere, and Cixous to see if they are having fun, which they respond in the affirmative. The Overlord regrets that he was unable to prepare something other than maid uniforms for them. Fith and Cixous though object as they love their outfits more than anything! Foire adds that more than anything, all of them and the summons are thrilled to receive such an invitation to such a wonderful event. Still Momonga reminds them to make sure they take turns taking breaks and have fun.
Pestonya and then approach Momonga to report that they are providing service to everyone at the party. to which Momonga advises to remember to have fun. Sebas thanks his master for his thoughtfulness. Momonga passes to the butler and maid that soon there will be a show and to look forward to it. Sebas recalls this, having heard of it from Demiurge, when Lupusregina begins the drum beat, signaling the start of the entertainment part of the event. Demiurge appears and thanks everyone for gathering today for the Third Nazarick Grand Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival. And that in addition to rewarding them, Momonga has also expressed his intention to thank the Defense Tree, which is in charge of Nazarick's defense network. In other words, the main character this time is also the Defense Tree. This coaxes the movement of its branches from the Defense Tree.
Momonga sees that the Defense Tree appears a bit relaxed. However, there are decorations hanging from it... and he wonders what the Defense Tree is really thinking. Its leaves are certainly shiny or rather at an objective stand point, the flowers that had charming effect that was reported in the reports are not blooming yet. This makes him wonder if this more like an autumn leaf viewing than a flower viewing.
Demiurge starts the show, adding that Cocytus was the one who came up with the idea, and Albedo having been inspired to create this work. Albedo and Cocytus appear each dressed in gear that makes them resemble their creators Tabula Smaragdina and Warrior Takemikazuchi. The crowd at the venue is left in awe. Shalltear for one asks if these costumes are treasures of the Supreme Being that are said to be left in the Treasury? Cocytus says that these items are not genuine. After finding a description that there was a custom of military commanders dressing up and performing skits at cherry blossom viewing parties, he thought this was a way to convey the greatness of Nazarik, so he made it with Albedo.
Aura is glad that it's not some way for Albedo to dressed up in a perverted way and try to approach Momonga on the pretext of a free-for-all. Mare cautions Aura for saying this as it is disrespectful to Tabula. Aura argues that she is not saying that Tabula Smaragdina's outfit was perverted, claiming that the Supreme Being was really nice. Albedo takes no offense from the twins. In just talking about her actions, Tabula Smaragdina has nothing to do with it right currently. She instead points out to how the Defense Tree reacted to Mare, who noticed that it did move, and stopped sucking in the corpses that were given to it for nutrients, and the skull lanterns hanging from the branches are trembling violently.
Albedo doesn't interpret it as a bad reaction. So she gives the floor to Cocytus, who boasts that despite the tree's appearance, even is not fluent in language, it should be able to understand the greatness of Nazarick. Sebas Tian then notices that both Cocytus and Albedo are getting serious by the murderous intent in the air. Demiurge tells him there is no need to worry about that, as he underlines Cocytus say "they were just pretending and doing a skit". Demiruge then asks Momonga to proceed with the next part of the skit. Momonga then prepares the "stage." The room is then engulfed in a white light. The surrounding landscape changes due to the power of summons and his friends, who are skilled in illusion. The dimly lit land is transformed into the faceless Throne Room, as if to demonstrate the authority of the supreme beings.[6]
In the illusion created by Momonga of the Throne Room, Momonga directly addresses the Defense Tree about what it thinks of its surroundings, explaining the area to be on the 10th Floor of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, a sacred place where no one is permitted to enter. Those who have come this far will be greeted as heroes. Hence the Sorcerer King welcomes the Defense Tree or by it's proper title - Mother Tree of the Supreme Trees. As he said this, Momonga has a brief flashback of Ulbert. Sebas Tian watching this asks Demiurge if Cocytus really intends to take on the Defense Tree in a fair and square battle? Demiurge confirms that this was also Cocytus' suggestion, as he originally joined the battle to lure the Defense Tree to Nazarick.
Albedo adds that the Defense Tree was quite belligerent to begin with. If they are to reward such a creature, it would be good to let it "vent" sometimes by having it be free to do as it pleases, according to Cocytus' suggestion. Before initiating the duel, he would like to express his sincere gratitude to Momonga for readily accepting his request. That's fine to Momonga, as he was always worried about the Defensive Tree. Even though it was necessary for business purposes, he ended up confining those who were in the wilderness to one place underground. But thinking back on it, privately, Momonga felt it was a kind of power harassment environment-or rather, the Defense Tree was clearly confined to an environment that was power harassment. Which is deplorable even by Herohero, who often complained about being stuck in a hut. To make it right, Momonga learned that Mare would take the Defense Tree to the 6th floor to let it sunbathe, something which they should do regularly to show Nazarick's appreciation.
As the Defense Tree is also part of the defense of Nazarick, Momonga tells everyone at the venue he wants to convey his respect and gratitude for its work, and how much he cares about the Defense Tree who is in charge. This is met with adulation from the Floor Guardians. Mare then interprets that the Defense Tree is happy too as its the trunk is rapidly gaining power with Controlled Treants emerging from the corpses it was feeding on.
Aura seeing the treants and even a Supreme Tree appear comments it looks like mating season, as the tree is in high spirits. Momonga is glad that his intentions were conveyed correctly to the Defense Tree. Sebas is given the cue by Momonga to stand ready with the Pleaides, to prevent unnecessary damage to the surrounding area, lest it will ruin the party. Yuri advises to the observing general maids to stay back to stay safe.
As it seems that everyone is ready, Demiurge calls for the mock battle, called "Bureiko" to start so as to let the Creators bring this cherry blossom viewing party to a brilliant close! Albedo then starts the fight to cut down a treant, which Ccocytus clashes with the Defense Tree. Demiurge acts as the announcer providing the audience with commentary of the duel. In the end the duel ends on a satisfying note where Cocytus calling it a good fight. He then tells the tree that on that day, when he brought it back here, it was definitely a formidable opponent, and the Floor Guardian couldn't help but remember that. Although the past is far removed from Cocytus, the fact that his defenses are his own remains unchanged. From now on, as long as Nazarick is protected, he will continue to be grateful for the Defense Tree's hard work.
Momonga dispels the illusion, bringing back the scene of the cavern and cherry blossom viewing. He commends the Defense Tree, though Albedo reminds it that on the other hand, if something happens to Nazarick, it could be said that it would be at fault, before telling the tree to keep up the good work. And so the cherry blossom viewing came to a close in great success.
Aftermath[]
Later after banquet, Mare takes the Defense Tree to sunbathe on the 6th floor for a while. Overall Mmonga thinks that the cherry blossom viewing was pretty good too. Especially the skit in front of the illusion in the Throne Room. In which Albedo and Cocytus in the costumes of their creators. did a play where Albedo as Tabula praised the Frozen Prison on the 5th Floor to be a wonderful piece of work. Cocytus as Warrior Takemikazuchi commented that the mansion was built by the Great Alchemist and will no doubt surely shock all who enter. Albedo as her creator Tabula she claims there's no way "he" is a Great Alchemist, adding that "he" is nothing more than a slug. much to Cocytus' shock. Beside that last part, Momonga felt that the skit was the best in a way and is sure Tabula would have been humble and said that it wasn't like that. Still Albedo's tone and what she was saying were a little strange, so he had to calm Cocytus down using Bukubukuchagama's mysterious job called life creation as an example.
From the mock duel, it was clear from the behavior of the treants under the control of the Defense Tree it had been enjoying itself from start to finish. And while it had even gone out to sunbathe just now, the cherry blossom viewing was a great success. Demiurge calls that now Momonga can take full advantage of the Defense Tree strategies. This leaves Momonga confused, and Demiurge explains that he guessed that the cherry blossom viewing was part of a plan of great importance that he had difficulty understanding but now does. Momonga not wanting to appear at a loss of what this plan it, asks Demiurge to explain it to everyone, including him. The demon explains that the Defense Tree has the ability to "scatter seeds that parasitize other organisms." Because of this, it was a bitter experience to capture the Defense Tree, but...Momonga has devised a plan to plant the seeds of the Defense Tree in enemy territory.
Although the Sorcerer Kingdom has previously established friendly relations with visitors from another world, they must naturally consider the possibility of dealing with a hostile "world." In that case, the ability to parasitize enemy creatures, such the Defense Tree, will increase their strength and would be a particularly useful weapon in enemy territory. Until now, due to the nature of the seeds being scattered, it was difficult to control the range of their influence. So there had been a refrain from carrying out any full-scale experiments. But the protagonist then finishes for the demon, in other words, Momonga was thinking of conducting an experiment in a "different world" where there is no risk of the base reaching their world, and so that is the reason why he held this cherry blossom viewing to adjust the condition of the Defense Tree!
To Albedo, it all makes sense on why Momonga would host a cherry blossom viewing for the Defense Tree given that it doesn't even bloom. Instead this was a leaf-viewing so to speak, meant to be used to hunt other worlds using the leaves. Cocytus finds it just to be expected of their clever master. Momonga is aghast that his subordinates would think he could contrive such a plan, as their way of thinking is weird. Regardless Momonga takes credit for the idea, agreeing that not all visitors are friendly, thus he thought he might have a chance to test the Defense Trees for offensive use. Aura proud of her master, promises to inform Mare of the details later, with Shalltear adding that she wrote down exactly what he just said. Momonga tells his children that it's possible that the invaders will resort to similar methods. Thus everyone should keep this danger in mind when conducting security and responding to future situations. earning a affirmation by the NPCs.
Meanwhile, at the vicinity of the Gigantic Tree on the 6th Floor, Large tree, Mare is showing the Parent Tree around, letting it enjoy the artificial sunlight. Unbeknownst to Momonga, the Defense Tree was once again coming under pressure from his superiors. Seeing it enjoy itsefl, Mare explains that earth and sky were all created by the hands of the Supreme Beings. For context, the dark elf adds that the tree saw reference to them when Cocytus and Albedo did the skit earlier. Mare adds that since the Defense Tree is working hard to protect this land it must feel a great honor. Before reminding it that it must not slack off or displease Momonga, causing the tree to shake with fear.
After biding Demurge farewell upon reaching her chambers, the succubus enters her room to change out of her gear, the moment the door closed, her smile disappeared. The Overseer sneers on how pointless that experience was, but considering the plan she must carry out, evading the eyes of none other than Momonga, it was all a cover to make her want to say, "Please let me do it." Though vows to Momonga for anyone who stands in the way of his peace, will suffer. On that note, Albedo showed a beautiful smile, then took off her Tabula Smaragdina-like equipment and stomped on it.[7]
