This is the eleventh chapter of Overlord New World.
Summary[]
Somewhere underground in a mine, a dwarf named Gondo is asked by another dwarf to allow him to check on the former physical condition. Gondo reluctantly agrees, and After briefly studying Gondo's condition, the other dwarf confirms that he sees no sign of Whitesnow Sickness. The other dwarf asks if Gondo will take a permanent position with him, as the former wants Gondo to be a crew leader at the mines. Gondo tells his colleague that he cannot as he will be away for awhile, having already accumulated funds for his travels. On the matter where he is going, Gondo states that his destination is Feo Raidho which is now abandoned and where he will mine.
The other dwarf is appalled at learning where Gondo is heading as Feo Raidho is dangerous, especially if he is going alone. Gondo though insists that he must go there as he needs to mine something there. On what he is digging for, the other dwarf asks if it is White Iron. If that is what Gondo seeks, the other dwarf suggests he sell it to him, offering to pay a high price. Gondo brushes off the offer, stating he has already decided what to use the ore for, and that it will all go into his research.
There is an attitude of disappointed from the other dwarf, apparently aware what Gondo's research is, but still finding it hard to believe he is still pursuing it. And while the dwarf understands Gondo's feelings, he tries to make him face reality by saying that Gondo's father would be saddened to see this. In response, Gondo unable to hold back, vented that he is aware of reality and sees it for what it is, but insists that that path of his father was not a mistake, swearing to revive their lost arts. Gondo ignoring the other dwarf's attempt at continue talking goes out away from the mining area. Gondo alone with his thoughts comprehends that he is a product of his talented father, and why he remains alive as he walks deeper down a dark tunnel.
A while ago, back in the mansion in E-Rantel where Ainz Ooal Gown is staying, the Sorcerer King sends a communique to Entoma via [Message]. He informs her that Shalltear will be accompanying him to the Lizardman Village. In the communication, Entoma has a request from Cocytus in that he would like to send a lizardman to Ainz to report on the state of the village. It is also a request to open a [Gate] to connect to Ainz's location allow the lizardman passage. Ainz gives permission, by stating that the [Gate] will opened within an hour. During that time the defensive magic will be down for two minutes, so the Sorcerer King asks that they ne on time.
Afterwards Ainz now decked in his royal gown and sitting on a throne in the great hall of his mansion with his maid Foire standing by his side. While waiting for his lizardman guest, the Overlord complains mentally of his attire being too flashy, having no sense for the aesthetics. A lizardman in bone armor arrives, greeting Ainz Ooal Gown, countlessly kneeling before the monarch. The polished and supplicated speech of the lizardman impresses Ainz, wondering to himself if this is the result of Cocytus' training.
Foire formally grants lizardman an audience with Ainz and asks him to give his name. The lizardman introduces himself as Kyuku Zuzu, formerly the Chieftain of Razor Tail, and using embellish titles, of being sent by the ruler of his village and master of the Great Lake, Cocytus. Kyuku announces he is to deliver the report from Cocytus. Before that Ainz as the master of Cocytus asks a question to Kyuku, and to be at ease in his response as it will be alright even if he is rude. His question being is how Zaryusu, who remained in the Great Tomb of Nazarick is doing? The lizardman reports that thanks to Ainz he is doing well. Adding that he is now a father and that his wife and he had a healthy child and are happy. In response Ainz asks if only one child was born, and Kyuku confirms this. But there is no doubt that the child regardless of bloodline will have a promising future. That being said it seems that the child has inherited his mother's bloodline, possessing white scales. This piques Ainz's interest, stirring his collector's spirit for a rare specimen, although he knows it would be cruel to separate a child from their parents. If memory serves him he recalls that the lizardmen brand those who travel and wonders if the child will grow up to be an adventurer in the Sorcerer Kingdom. Aside from these private thoughts, Ainz asks Kyuko how the mother and child are doing.
The former chieftain replies that both are healthy, with the child expected to grow to be quite lively. That is very good news to Ainz, who wishes to give back something to celebrate the child's birth. So he asks Kyuko what would the lizardmen give in a time like this? The lizardman states that his kind do not have a custom of giving gifts to celebrate births, he feels that Zaryusu would be delighted to receive arms and armor. Kyuku then takes the opportunity to ask a question of his own, with it being why he rates Zaryusu so highly. While in truth Ainz had no intention of praising Zaryusu, he tells the lizardman that Zaryusu is a talented individual and from what he heard his training in Nazarick has shown admirable results. Thus he will fairly reward those who are excellent and loyal. The answer is taken aback by Kyuko grateful for Ainz in answering his question, stating that his people will continue to serve him loyally which Ainz tells him to never forget that determination.
The Sorcerer King has another question, which does not relate to the lizardmen per say. He then asks if they have heard anything about the dwarves who live in the Azerlisia Mountains? Kyuko to his shock tells Ainz that he has heard of them from a colleague. That the dwarves have established cities in mines to extract ores and are a race that produces many different weapons from the ores they mine and rare metals. This is surprising to Ainz as he never expected to receive this much information about the dwarves so he asks where Kyuko heard all this from. The answer he receives is Zenberu, who was a former chieftain like Kyuku.
The information is useful to Ainz, as there are many weapons in the current world that cannot be made in YGGDRASIL. For example, Zaryusus' Frost Pain, Clementine's stiletto and Gazef's sword. for the last item, he heard from Fluder that Gazef's sword was most likely born from the natural absorption mana or was created by the magic of the Dragons. There is also the matter of the runes...which Ainz decides he must act on. Sadly Fluder does not know much about the dwarves, but wonders if the dwarves could make a similar weapon to Gazef's. And if a player is meddling in the dwarf country in some way, like being behind the spread of runs? Ainz considers that if he takes a chance, form delegation and propose diplomacy to the Dwarf Kingdom, the possible player there might attack and he could use that as justification to retaliate. But three questions remain for Ainz. Such as whether or not there is a player there? What are the history of the history of the runes? And what are the dwarves blacksmithing techniques and minerals? All these are questions Ainz needs answers to and needs to see for himself. And while doubts that the dwarves will reveal their secrets that easily, it still possible to buy dwarven weapons and sell them to adventurers in his country. So it would be best to proceed as amicably as possible. So Ainz makes the decision to have Zenburu guide him to the dwarven cities.
At the lizardman village in the Wetlands, Ainz is standing on a raised wooden, before the erected Stone Statue of Ainz Ooal Gown. Though he has seen the effigy many times, he still can't get used to it. He commands Cocytus who is kneeling before him to rise, before telling e Floor Guardian that he heard his report, commending his hard work he is doing, managing the lizardmen. Ainz tries to offer a reward, but his declined by Cocytus as his reward is serving his master. This is unacceptable to Ainz who then orders Cocytus to try and come up with something he wants as a reward.
The Overlord then directs his attention to the assembled lizardmen who are kneeling before him. The Sorcerer King addresses the demi-humans wishing to talk to Zenberu as to bluntly put it he wishes to go to the land of the dwarves, so he wishes for the lizardman to become his guide. Zenberu with much hesitation, tries to decline and asks why the Sorcerer King wishes to go the land of the dwarves. Cocytus appears infuriated by his subordinate's rudeness and tells the lizardman to answer his master.
Ainz though tells Cocytus he does not find Zenberu attitude rude and permits the lizardman to speak frankly. Understanding that there is a misunderstanding, Ainz tells Zenberu he does not intend to harm the dwarves but in fact wishes to establish friendly relations. The lizardman is astonished, which irks Cocytus, although Ainz tells him to bare it. The Overlord swears by his name that no harm will come to the dwarves as he only seeks a relationship with them. Though depending the situation force y be necessary. Zenberu understands, though since he got to know the dwarves for a short time, he warns Ainz might side with the dwarves.
Cocytus is angered by this, but Ainz tells him it is fine. In fact comments on Zenberu's bravery for boldly speaking his mind, risking not just his death but the fate of the lziardmen village with this tone. Zenberu responds that Ainz would not do that, though Ainz believes the lizardman is mistaken. Adding that he would not destroy a group for an individual's betrayal, the same cannot be said for multiple accounts or the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. Though if it came to that he will destroy them immediately and without mercy.
So tells Zenberu that he understands his sentiment to care for his dwarven benefactors, and that even if he betrays him, no harm will come to the village as it will not be seen as an organized rebellion. He underlines he has no wish to destroy the Dwarf Kingdom, so the lizardman has nothing to worry. Zenberu finally agrees to be Ainz;'s guide to the underground dwarven city.
Now that is settled, Ainz addresses Zaryusu, giving his congrats to him and his wife in their child. Zaryusu tells the Overlord that his son is already walking. While Ainz thinks it's a bit early, for lizardmen it's quite normal. Ainz mentions that he is working on unifying the various races to create a harmonious country, hopes that Zaryusu and his wife may settle there. If it was a command Zaryusu would obey, though Ainz states that this is not a command. Just something he wanted Zaryusu to know, given that he was a traveler.
In that regard, Zaryusu personally would not want to move to a city. Even with the story that Ainz gave, him, a sudden change in scenery would be too anxious for his wife and child. Ainz considers, and thinks maybe the younger generation might appeal to the idea. This makes the lizardman worry that Ainz intends to take the children only, but Ainz tells him stop letting his imaginations run wild. His interest in the children is creating a world where all races coexist. The first step would be having the children to broaden their horizons.
Zaryusu would like to have the lizardmen children remain in the village, where it is safe and food is abundant, but that may change as times are different. Ainz agrees that things are confusing now, and one cannot expect change from those set in their ways. Zaryusu and Zenberu wholeheartedly concur given their personal struggles with the elders of their tribes, though ironically now they are now that old generation who are hesitant to change.
In reflection on this talk of parents and children, echoes in Ainz of how he sees the NPCs, as children who he wishes to be happy. To Cocytus, Ainz tells his servant not to inflict harm on the village even if Zenberu choose to oppose him, which the Floor Guardian complies.
As for Zenberu, Ainz is very much interested in everything he knows about their destination. When Zenberu still continues to speak casually this causes Cocytus to rebuke the lizardman for his uncouthness, but his worries are dismissed by Ainz. Though he does politely admonish the lizardman for making his superior Cocytus feeling ashamed for his tone. This causes Zenberu to shudder in fear.
At Cocytus suggestion Ainz decides to take a seat to discuss the Dwarf Kingdom. Cocytus thn lays down offering his back as a chair for his master to sit on. Seeing this Ainz then asks Cocytus what he is doing. Cocytus answers that he heard this is what Shalltear did and sought to imitate her pose to supplication.
Cocytus as he who rules over the lizardman he still feels that Zenberu was disrespectful to Ainz. AInz though tells him again that he does not care, which Cocytus states that is his point. Hence he continues to offer his back as a seat as penance until the undead finally agrees. Zaryusu and Zenberu are left in awe as Cocytus is used as a seat by Ainz. For Ainz he feels entirely embarrassed and cold. Cocytus though eager to know asks who would Ainz prefer as a chair, him or Shalltear. Ainz confused on why his subordinate would want to know, Cocytus answers that he would like to know as a reference for those who would want to ride him.
The words leave Ainz aghast as he has no idea what Cocytus is talking about. And makes his question if Cocytus was of a species which allowed the female to mount them during reproduction. Or if Cocytus is a sexual masochist. Internally he calls out for Warrior Takemikazuchi. In any case Ainz has no intention of knowing Cocytus's sexual proclivities. In regard to how sitting on Cocytus feels, Ainz answers that it is rough but not so rough that one can't sit on the Floor Guardian. And in a sense is more comfortable than sitting on Shalltear. This satisfies Cocytus who hopes serve this way to carry Ainz's heir. Ainz also adds that Cocytus' being a seat has good points, as his back is cold and perfect for the summer. Before Cocytus can respond, Ainz calls Zenberu to tell him more about the Dwarf Kingdom.
A few moments later, Ainz's convoy composed of various beasts of burden, Nazarick Elder Guarders and Vampire Brides are seen, with Aura riding fenn and Shalltear on Quadracile at the ready. Ainz goes over to Zenberu, who is speaking to Zaryusu and Crusch, to check if he is ready to go. Ainz spies in Crusch's arms a newborn lizardman, who he assumes to be her and Zaryusu's child. Upon noticing Ainz's eyes on her child, the female lizardman turns away hiding the child from his sight. This reaction disappoints Ainz as he was not planning on stealing the child. Ainz proceeds to hand Zenberu a Ring of Sustenance and Flight Necklace for the journey.
He then soon notices some young lizardmen children watching him with looks of curiosity. Looking at them Ainz considers maybe it is time for other children of different races like goblin, humans and dark elves to join hands. Cocytus asks if Ainz is displeased, offering to live his life as a seat for his master. The offer is turned down by Ainz, deciding that it is time to leave. Cocytus tells hi master to take care and should anything happen, that he and his forces will move out with the second team. Afterwards Ainz mounts on his beast and rides out alongside Aura and Shalltear.
The convoy passes through the mountain range, witnessing the majesty of the mountains. As the convoy moves through the forests that cover the mountains, many native monsters cower behind trees as it passes. Ainz engrossed in the sights he and his subordinates pass wonders if such scenes are seen by adventurers. Ainz decides to choose a empty rocky plain to be the site where they will rest for the night. Shalltear is less enthusiastic as the site is shabby. The Sorcerer King though changes this by casting his 10th Tier Spell of [Create Fortress] which conjures a great fortress. Inside Ainz tells everyone that they will take shelter in the fortress and the rooms it provides. Once the leaders of the expedition are seated together in a room, for Zenberu Ainz apologies as he is about to do something that will sound offensive to the lizardman. That being, Ainz wishes to look through Zenberu's memories. The Overlord tries to assure Zenberu that he has mastered memory manipulation magic. Although Zenberu worries that there might be after-effect, to which Ainz is confident that there will be none given he has experimented this same procedure on CZ2128 Delta without any problems.
Ainz though only gets vague impressions of the dwarves from the lizardman, and nothing concrete. This forces the Sorcerer King to rely on Zenberu's direction and continue heading north. In the meantime is asks Zenberu to confirm what he knows of the Dwarf Kingdom to what the undead has read on it. Before long Ainz then orders everyone to rest up for tomorrow.
Aura playfully asks Shalltear which room should she use to be in close vicinity of Ainz. To engrossed in jotting in her notebook, Shalltear tells the dark elf it does not matter to her. The dark elf learns that Shalltear is taking notes on everything that Ainz said, and Aura can see that the vampire has written in detailed on their master's conversations. Although Aura thinks that while taking notes is good, she asks if that is really the point? Rather than just copying down what Ainz says, the dark elf thinks that she should be using the notes to teach her to deal with similar situations. Thus Aura recommends Shalltear read the notes to herself again in her room, and use them to try and think about what Ainz had in mind and put herself in his place. After Shalltear confirms that she will to Aura, the women go their separate way. As Shalltear leaves, Aura can't help but think she feels like having a useless little sister, so much so the dark elf dares to wonder if Bukubukuchagama felt the same way.
Three days since the expedition's departure, Zeberu on his mount cries out to his liege that he recognizes the location and that they are near the entrance to the dwarven city. The convoy then follows the lizardman's lead, which takes them to a cave entrance. Aura then announces their arrival, that a new country to the south has been established, ruled by the Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown. A request is sent out by the elf to have the dwarves sent out guides, but no response is heard or received.
The Sorcerer King then dispatches the Hanzo to check to see what is the situation inside the city. Shalltear as ordered by Ainz stand vigilant, and Ainz receives a [Message] from the Hanzo leader. The Hanzo have discovered the residential district of the dwarven city, but they see no signs of life nor any corpses. They have investigated and so far there neither are any furnishings in the homes or signs of a struggle. In other words the dwarves voluntarily abandoned the city. Requiring more clarity on what has happened, Ainz decides to have the convoy head into the city.
Inside the eerie silent city, Ainz commands the Hanso to investigate the tunnels and to search for clues on what happened to the inhabitants and why the city was abandoned. Aura is the first to find something. Ainz follows her voice to a small dwarven dwelling where the dark elf, Shalltear and Zenberu are examining footprints on the floor. Aura concludes that the footprints are probably not dwarven. Zenberu confirms that they are not as dwarves do not go barefoot, keeping their shoes on even when sleeping. From what Aura can tell on the footprints, the creature that made them also had a tail. This makes Shalltear ask if it could belong to a lizardman, but Aura says that the tail appears to be much thinner. But from what she could tell there were at least ten of whatever made the prints. Zenberu grows concerned as he found no traces in the dwarf's house where he was looked after when he first visited the city and wonders what is going on. That question is also asked by Ainz.
A new [Message] is received by Ainz form the Hanzo with good news, they found a trace of someone, a sound coming from deep in the mines like someone is digging up ores. Needing to find out exactly what happened to the city, Ainz decides to open a friendly dialogue with the other party with Aura. As for Shalltear she is given orders to remain on standby. In terms of precaution, Ainz will be invisible while he follows Aura inside the tunnel. If the other person tries to escape then they plan to capture them. The duo heads into the mines, and while peering around the corner they see the maker of the noise to be none other than the dwarf Gondo.
