This is the tenth chapter of Overlord New World.

Summary[]

At the mansion in E-Rantel, Ainz Ooal Gown contemplates on his recruitment announcement at the Grand Arena, for those willing to come to the Sorcerer Kingdom's Adventurer's Guild. Knowing it will take some time to see results, Ainz reviews what needs to be done, such as building a school for training adventurers which will be built at the current Adventurer's Guild. To complement a dormitory would need to be built to accept the new adventurers while the training staff will be the remaining adventurers who stayed in E-Rantel.

For the project to expand, Ainz would like to speak with Albedo on land readjustment, but more than that his mind drifts back to the events at the arena. In how Emperor Jircniv requested the Empire be made into a vassal state of the Sorcerer Kingdom. Honestly Ainz doesn't know what to day about that as it was so sudden, assumes even Albedo and Demiurge would also be confused by the turn of events. But he wonders though, could this be a result of Demiurge's machinations? If so what did the demon do? Ainz then decides that it would be best to go somewhere far away and let the two Floor Guardians handle the debacle, but he isn't sure that will solve anything.

His musings brings to mind on another thing Ainz found in the imperial capital, the existence of runes. In this new world, it seems that the knowledge of YGGDRASIL so he wonders the about the significance of the runes. He recalls the engraved runes he saw that sword he saw Osk own. In his original world, runes are just written characters.

Here in this world, the runes originate from the Azerlisia Mountains where the dwarves dwell. From what Ainz gathered there are dwarves called runesmiths. Oddly in YGGDRASIL there was never such a job class in the game. So this must mean that runesmith is a unique job class in this world. So it's possible that the technologies of the two worlds have merged.

Ainz shows interest in investigating these runes in more detail, as it could be that a player might be behind them. And maybe the person who brainwashed Shalltear might be lurking where the runes originate. Unfortunately Fluder doesn't seem to know much about the runes. Ainz gets up from his desk, which alerts the on duty maid, Foire who is at the ready to heed to her master, though the undead holds his hand to silently tell her to stay where she is. Ainz resumes his musings on the matter of the runes.

And although Ainz knows very little on them, he guesses that he should still jump ahead despite the risks. So for this investigation, the Sorcerer King will personally dispatch himself, which he likens to a president of a company, going out to negotiate with a client. The client being the Dwarf Kingdom, which Ainz intends to show his sincerity. Though Ainz considers that he could send Pandora's Actor instead, but then who would administer the nation in the meantime? The answer is him, Ainz Ooal Gown, but to Ainz's internal narration, he knows deadpan that's impossible as he is unqualified to run a nation.

In truth Ainz feels more comfortable if he goes to the land of the dwarves himself, once there he could always teleport back to the Sorcerer Kingdom. And if things got complicated, he could use his sale tactics to get by. Plus as time goes by, he will leave the matter of the Empire's vassalization to Albedo and Demiurge and have them draft the plans for it.

There are no regrets in passing the responsibilities to his subordinates as this is all a means to escape from work. Another question dawns on Ainz, on who he should take to the land of the dwarves? The undead takes a moment to eamine a map of the New World, specifically the Azerlisia Mountains where from there onwards is the "unknown world".

The first choice is Aura who Ainz summons to the mansion's study. The dark elf is surprised by selection. It being not just her but also Shalltear. After lowers her voice at Ainz's request, she calms down. On the matter of Shalltear's selection to join in the expedition, she assumes her inclusion means Ainz aims to destroy the Dwarf Kingdom. This is not the case, and Ainz asks why she would think such a thing as his intentions for the expedition is to proceed on an amicable basis. But Aura just interprets that if the dwarves don't behave in a friendly manner then they will be destroyed. Suddenly Ainz sees that Aura is being basis and limiting to Shalltear's role on the expedition.  

The Sorcerer King makes it clear that one reason for Shalltear's inclusion is to emphasize combat power. Though there is another reason, causing Aura to be confused on what else could Shalltear be something other than as a fighting force. Seeing her reaction, makes Ainz be reminded of Bukubukuchagamaand Peroroncino's sibling bickering. And it warms him his friends live withing Aura and Shalltear. Though the feeling is brief as his undead's emotional suppressant kicks in, which he finds annoying as it takes away to positive feelings and memories.

Aura notices his shift in attitude, asks if he is alright, but Ainz assures her that he is. To explain why Shalltear is going on this trip, it is to test her aptitude. Shalltear was born as the strongest Floor Guardian. However that reputation as the strongest hinders Shalltear's growth. Normally Shalltear would be used as a weapon, aimed at an enemy that needs to be destroyed. But Ainz wants to change that and utilize Shalltear based on the specifications of a mission. Aura doesn't understand it, but since Ainz thinks it must be done then she will believe it is correct.

While that's not the case, Ainz tries again to make Aura understand. The previous optimum was derived from Shalltear's abilities. It may not be the best for Shalltear, who has a lot of experience. Unlike when the NPCs were just data, they now have emotions and hearts, with minds that can think for themselves. Thus tomorrow's Shalltear could be different from today's Shalltear. So instead of making her repeat her usual duty, the best would be to let Shalltear experience more things and allow her to grow. And while failure may occur, it will be okay as there will be others to support her. Hence why Aura is part of the expedition.

Though he elaborates that this is just to allow Shalltear to experience new things, and it could be wrong to do so, as it would make someone deviate their social contract and cause problems for the group. Aura asks why not, which Ainz answers that it would not be right to force Shalltear to do things she does not want to do. Though Aura objects, stating doing what Ainz wants is what they are suppose to do. Ainz counterargues that it would be wrong to make her colleague do something that goes against Peroroncino wishes. And that Aura would be feel the same if Ainz's orders conflicted with Bukubukuchagama's desires.

The argument causes Aura to concede that he is correct, and the elf feels disappointed in herself. Ainz tells her to cheer up as it is nothing to get worked up about. Anyway Shalltear will take on various challenges and he would like to confirm her growth through these efforts. And that is the reason for his selection, which Aura beams that Ainz's plan always has a complex motive.

Meanwhile Foire receives a knock at the door to the study. Shalltear soon bursts into the room, decked out in her Valkyrie armor, much to Ainz's confusion. The vampire explains she came prepared to protect him, promising to annihilate all enemies that oppose Ainz. Aura thinks Shalltears is being fastidious as always, and should listen to Ainz before acting out.

AInz in a more cordial tone, tells Shalltear idea for being included is valid, but for this occasion it's a little different. Seeing that his words were not enough to enlighten her, Ainz will explain the purpose of the expedition. Now that the three are all sitting down, Ainz says that there are many reasons by he selected Shalltear, one of them is to have someone to protect him. But that the main reason is to give Shalltear experience. And while she may seem unsuitable due to her Blood Frenzy, and hopes that this arbitrary decision while being unsuitable may surprise Shalltear to be suited for it.

The Floor Guardian is in awe and passionately swears to show him results and the he will not regret his choice in her. For this mission, Ainz informs the Floor Guardians that Shalltear will be under Aura's command and will follow her orders. In response to this Shalltear bows her head acknowledging this a bit with too much emphasis. Ainz then tries to get Shalltear to calm down, but Foire asks if she could interject. Seeing that there is not problem Ainz allows the maid.

Foire asks if it would be possible to bring one of the maids as an attendant to the Dwarf Kingdom. She worries that the other party might look down on her liege without bringing his own servant. She makes a valid argument, however Ainz rejects the bringing one of the general maids with him, as there is a possibility that a player might be in the Dwarf Kingdom. Instead Ainz would like to have one of Shalltear's subordinate Vampire Brides to serve him.

He and Shalltear makes plans to include six Vampire Brides and thirty other attendants to join the expedition. As for any other suggestions, both Shalltear and Aura volunteer bringing their undead/beasts as well. The two women then glare at each other, but Shalltear away first permitting Aura to speak first. This acquiescence takes Aura aback, although Shalltear claims this is due to Aura being her current superior now. Still Aura feels gross about this arrangement. As a part of a compromise, Aura suggests having twenty-five of Shalltear's undead ride a magic beast that Aura will provide. There is no objection, and neither does Ainz if they feel the need to increase the number of attendants. Ainz tells the two that they should start taking action, and prepare as they will be gone for awhile. Before that happens Ainz is scheduled to talk to Cocytus and Pandora's Actor, and tells the two female Floor Guardians they are dismissed.

Both Aura and Shalltear leave Ainz's study. Shalltear is visibly excited for her long awaited chance to redeem herself for the Bloody Valkyrie Incident. Since that terrible time she laments that all she was assigned were simple tasks, but now is thankful for being given such an important mission by her master. Aura listening to her comrade's musing though corrects her that no matter how small a task is for Ainz, they are all equally important. Even so Shalltear feels that this mission will make her shine. Aura reminds Shalltear her work in guarding Nazarick is very important, so the role could not just be left to anyone. Now considering this, Shalltear thinks perhaps her previous role was not so insignificant.

As further proof, Aura adds that Ainz has admitted Shalltear is strong, much to the vampire's delight. It proves effective in calming the excited Floor Guardian, which is Aura's aim to get her comrade to stay focused and avoid troubling Ainz. She hopes Shalltear can stop thinking too much negativity. It certainly does not help when the vampire mentions that Demiurge keeping an eye on her when she was in a human city. Due to that it made Shalltear feel useless and leads her to think Ainz feels the same way.

This is dismissed by Aura, citing Ainz wisdom exceeds Demiurge, so he does not have such thoughts of Shalltear being unfit for duty. Otherwise he would not be entrusting her with his safety. While that maybe true, Shalltear thinks the others in Nazarick might think like Dmeiurge, which Aura cannot deny. But she gets Shalltear's spirits up by telling her that Ainz cares about her, and should not have so much doubt of herself. If she wants to better herself then study and act, so she can impress their master.

Regardless Aura points out that both of them now can be at Ainz's side as his trusted protectors. On the question of what should Shalltear study, Aura recommends that she think and learn for herself. Despite the advice, Aura wonders if she gave the right type. So Aura then makes a small prayer to her creator, Bukugama and Perocin to bless them for this mission.

Ainz then announces them to get ready for the journey. The scene then switches to the Lizardman Village in the Great Lake, where Shalltear and Aura who are riding on Fenn accompany Ainz who is riding on a red beast. The village is their first stop on their journey, before heading towards their true destination, the Azerlisia Mountains in search of the Dwarf Kingdom.

Elsewhere, deep in the mountains, a lone dwarf toils in darkness. Briefly resting he muses to himself that it is still not for his dream.

Major Events[]

  • Ainz Ooal Gown decides to take a personal trip to the Dwarf Kingdom not only to escape his duties in vassalizing the Baharuth Empire, but to learn more about the runes he saw on Osk, sword.
  • Shalltear Bloodfallen and Aura Bella Fiora are selected to be on Ainz's personal excursion. Aura thinks the trip is a campaign to exterminate the dwarves, due to Shalltear's inclusion, but is told but Ainz that the vampire is joining to allow her to expand her experiences and usefulness.
  • Shalltear is informed by Ainz of her inclusion, and like Aura misunderstand her selection, before being told by Ainz of his reason for selecting her.
  • After arrangements for their entourage are made, Aura and Shalltear have a serious talk about Shalltear's self-esteem.
  • The Sorcerer Kingdom's expedition of the Dwarf Kingdom reaches the Great Lake, where the Lizardman Village is.
