This is the eighth chapter of Overlord New World.
Summary[]
Go Gin finishes donning his armor and equipment as Osk watches. After he is done, the Martial Lord and Osk head to the stage of the Grand Arena. On the way, Go Gin says thank you to Osk. The merchant asks what he is referring his thanks to. Though the Martial Lord is disturbed and asks aloud what kind of challenger he is facing or if he is the challenger himself. Go Gin then clarifies to Osk and confesses to him that he is trembling in fear due to his instincts yelling out to him about the upcoming battle. So much so that his own legs won't move as if they are telling him that he will die if he fights.
Go Gin having heard his opponent is the Sorcerer King, he wonders what kind of foe he is...and senses that his arrogance up to this point will be paid in full. This condescending talk confuses Osk, but then Go Gin tells the merchant he is strong...before he correct himself stating that is a lie. His strength he admits is derived from his racial abilities, and not truly his own strength. Even after gaining the skills of a warrior, there are a few who could content with him. In order to train himself, Go Gin did not try to understand his challengers' and deliberately put himself at a disadvantage. But now he finally found a foe which his instincts are telling him to run away. Thus Go Gin thanks Osk once again, as he fulfilled his agreement that they made when they first met.
Osk had met Go Gin ten years ago. There was a rumor that there was a monster who would never kill an opponent if they discarded their weapon. On that rumor Osk hurried to confirm it himself and met the War Troll. Osk had asked Go Gin then, why he was doing all this? The answer he got was that Go Gin was training to become stronger.
This reverberated something within Osk, who scouting for someone to become the ultimate warrior. He then invited Osk to train under him to allow Troll to become Champion of the Grand Arena. In place of Osk's lack of talent he cultivated Go Gin to become the strongest warrior as it was a dream they both shared.
Before Go Gin heads to his match, Osk tells him not to lose, to which the champion has no intention of doing. In retrospect Go Gin muses that all his challengers probably felt the same way, and now it seems to be his turn. Osk informs Go Gin that the Sorcerer King is a magic caster, but since it would be too boring of a contest so magic has been forbidden. So Osk is confident that Go Gin will not lose.
Go Gin is surprised that the Sorcerer King would agree to this restriction. Osk believes that the Sorcerer King agreed due to his attitude of not considering defeat. To Go Gin the strong are often proud, and plans to show his opponent how foolish that was for accepting such a condition.
Osk proud of his subordinate's spirit, reminds Go Gin not to get ahead of himself, as the Sorcerer King is not someone to be underestimate given that he may have some powerful never before seen magic items. It matters not to Go Gin as he is in the mindset of a challenger, he won't let down his guard.
Another item that Osk wants to discuss is one that they had spoken about some time ago. One that causes him to be nervous about discussing, the matter about his wife. The War Troll wants to know why now Osk wants to talk about this, as Go Gin states that if he wants a wife he will simply just go back to his village, and thus asks Osk to stop assign human women to him. In that case, Osk asks Go Gin to bring a wife back from his village, adding that if the War Troll needs anything to return in triumph to just ask. And hopes that if Go Gin has a child, the merchant is sure they will be stronger than the father. Go Gin will consider it, but for now needs to think seriously on the upcoming match.
The Martial enters the arena floor in which the announcer declares his presence to the cheering crowds. Among those voices is none other than Emperor Jircniv who is rooting for Go Gin. This is noted by the waiting Ainz Ooal Gown, who thinks his excitedness is a fan of the Martial Lord. After briefly wondering Jircniv's reaction on seeing Ainz win, the Sorcerer King takes a look at his opponent. He is just as described by his disciple Fluder and is about to presume something on his opponent, but decides that would be too reckless to do.
The two combatants greet each other, with Go Gin introducing himself as the Martial Lord and a member of the War Troll race, whilst Ainz Ooal Gown gives him his name and a member of the Overlord. That being said Ainz asks Go Gin if he will make fun of his name since it is long, and while trolls do view people with short names to be strong, Go Gin having lived in the Empire for many years has learned to discard such prejudice. Besides he feels that his foe is a person who is proud of his name, and has no wish to disgrace the name of the strong as it is a warrior's shame. This impresses Ainz, and thinks perhaps he needs to change his perception of War Trolls, though Go Gin tells him that there is no need for that since just a special case. Also that different races have members with different ideas.
Go Gin's response makes Ainz laugh in good humor, finding he likes the War Troll. He then decides to make a bet, if he wins Go Gin will be his. This is fine to Go Gin, who agrees to become Ainz's subordinate, if he loses. However if Go Gin wins, he wants to have His Majesty. At first this confuses the Overlord, but is clarified that Go Gin having never met anyone worth killing and eating who is stronger than him wants to eat Ainz so he can claim his power. While the request is strange, Ainz accepts it, as the winner holds the right of life and death. Ainz adds that he hopes Go Gin will not refuse to be resurrected. Offering his hand out, Go Gin accepts it and the two combatants shake. They step back, take their position, before the match starts at the sound of the gong.
The match begins with Go Gin rushing at Ainz with his club which the Overlord skillfully dodges. The Sorcerer King suspects that his opponent is using some kind of skill to increase his speed. All the while he hear Jircniv screaming at the top of his lings for Go Gin. The noise the emperor makes causes Ainz to think his royal peer his enjoying himself, to the contrary the cries are more out of desperation, with enthusiasm. Back to his opponent the Martial Lord has halted his attacks, and is standing guard. This leads Ainz in launching his own offensive, using his staff to smash Go Gin's weapon to the ground, and later activate the staff's fire ability. The flames pauses Go Gin, due to the War Troll's aversion to fire as it hinders his racial regeneration.
Using the diversion, Ainz comes behind the Martial Lord, placing a hand on his shoulder. Something is immediately felt by Go Gin and he retaliates but swinging his club around at Ainz, knocking the undead some distance before he recovers back on his feet. More cheering is heard from the emperor by Ainz, which annoys the Sorcerer King, thinking that a fellow monarch should have more concern for him. Go Gin looks visibly weakened. He thinks he has been poisoned, but Ainz tells him that he is not, explaining he broke no rules but has the ability to infuse negative energy through his touch, although the undead is sure that Go Gin can regenerate from it with his racial abilities. Though warns in addition to that he can inflict physical ability damage through touch, leaving his strength and dexterity reduced, which he doubts Go Gin can heal from. Simply put the more Ainz touches Go Gin, he loses in physical ability until he ends up like a caterpillar. This of course is a lie, as he had a limit of how much penalty he can inflict on a foe, so it was just a bluff to see if the Martial God was hiding any hidden moves.
In Ainz's approach, Go Gin backs away much to the crowd's shock. Ainz mentally states that there is a difference between him and the Martial Lord. And while he admits that Go Gin is the better warrior, there is an overwhelming difference in HP. So even if both parties abandons defense and engage in a fight, Ainz will win in the end. Ainz tells Go Gin he is battle him not just with a restriction of not using magic, but also magic items. Using something of high rank would be too advantageous to be used in the duel, according to Ainz, so he had restricted himself with using weapons that are on Go Gin's level. Ainz then puts his staff away in his Item Box and takes out his stilettos attached to his belt, claiming them to be weapons he borrowed from the adventurer Momon.
The Sorcerer King throws himself at Go Gin, aiming a strike with his stilettos. He manages to pierce his weapon into Go Gin's chest, damaging the armor and plunging into the flesh. But the damage is minimal due Go Gin activated the Martial Art [Reinforce Hide] and [Greater Reinforce Hide] which forces the blade almost out. But Ainz activates his spell within his weapon, [Fireball], burning the War Troll's shoulder. Ainz deems that the spell which was implant by Fluder at his master's request a bit too strong. By now there are no voices in the audience cheering the Sorcerer King, and seems all sympathy is going to the Martial Lord. Ainz supposes it's not like YGGDRASIL, but guesses it's due to being in enemy territory, and decides to give up winning the audience.
Pointing a stiletto at Go Gin, he declares that he will kill him, but gives his an ultimatum, surrender and he will end the fight. Go Gin rejects the offer as even though he is weakened, he still has his pride as the Martial Lord. And he will resist to the death. Intrigued Ainz asks the Martial Lord to remove his helm so he may look at him. The Martial Lord complies, revealing a tired yet determined Martial Lord. Ainz calls Go Gin having a nice look as his eyes reminds him of Gazef Stronoff. In response to that Go Gin, thanks Ainz as it is a pleasure to be praised by the strong.
Ainz is still curious if Go Gin have any skills to beat him or reverse the situation and ask this of his opponent. Go Gin denies that he has anything of the sort, but nevertheless he will continue to fight. The Sorcerer King finds these words to be very direct but honest, unlike him making he feel a little pathetic. As he prepares to attack Go Gin and claim victory, Ainz wonders what the Guardians would think of the light in Go Gin's eyes. But then considers that the NPCs would scorn everything not of Nazarick. The two combatants charge at each other with determination to end the match.
In the face of a charging Go Gin, Ainz uses [Despair Aura I] so as to inflict fear on the war troll to paralyze his attack. However Go Gin continues on through the mental attacks, activating three Martial Arts, [Strong Strike], [Divine Skill Single Flash] and [Flow Acceleration], causing Ainz to be bashed into the sky before being crashed towards the ground.
Ainz recovers just in time before Go Gin comes with a follow-up attack, dodging it. Going on the defensive to avoid Go Gin's swings, the Sorcerer King realizes that Go Gin had lied to him about not having any way to turn around the fight and scolds himself as Punitto Moe would be ashamed at his carelessness. He also finds the cheers for Go Gin to be annoying especially from Jircniv calling out "Finish him!" Ainz sees that he still cannot understand Martial Arts. Whilst within the Martial Lord's reach, Ainz manages to lay a hand on him, further weakening the war troll. Tired but determined, Go Gin then begins removing pieces of his armor. He asks Ainz if he is weak as the Sorcerer King has not revealed a fraction of his power, and Go Gin can tell that even without his opponent's magic he is a mighty force.
When Ainz answers this in the affirmative, the troll accepts this, and Ainz elaborates that for the battle he forbade himself from using many magic items and all sort of abilities. To which Go Gin guesses without those restrictions the victor of the battle would have been determined in an instant. But Ainz tells Go Gin it is not his fault as he just had a bad opponent. If Go Gin is the strongest in the Empire, then Ainz is the strongest in the world.
Go Gin likewise accepts this, as part of the adage of there is always someone better than you. However knowing this makes training more enjoyable which Ainz can relate. Go Gin then makes a wish for Ainz to fulfill, to show his full power, even just a fraction so he can experience the zenith of might. Ainz obliges and activates his skill to invalidate physical attacks to show the troll the pinnacle.
Go Gin with a smile faces Ainz a barrage of swings from his club, each connecting to the undead, though having no effect as Ainz stands calmly by. Taking the blows without heed, Ainz proceeds to plunge his stiletto into the Martial Lord's chest and activates the magic imbued in it. The Martial Lord falls to the floor, his defeat witnessed by a solemn Osk.
