This is the seventh chapter of Overlord New World.
Summary[]
On the other end of the [Message] Fluder Paradyne is excited to hear from his "master". Ainz Ooal Gown informs the wizard that he is calling to fulfill his promise to teach the human magic and requests for some of his time. Fluder is head over heels at the prospect and that Momonga would take the time to see him. Momonga noting his disciple's eagerness states that he will use [Greater Teleportation] to physically meet Fluder.
Upon hearing the high level of teleportation magic that Ainz will employ throws Fluder with more excitement and begins asking questions on its tier level. Ainz though asks Fluder to withhold his questions for later. The Overlord asks if Fluder has any anti-divination magic countermeasures. Unfortunately Fluder states he does not know of any such magic, as he does not specialize in that field. This is deemed reckless by Ainz telling the wizard he should at least compensate using magic items, noting that he well known to have made many such items in the imperial capital.
It is as Ainz says according to Fluder, but the aged humans tells the undead magic caster that the premise holds in order to create magic item, one must know a related spell. For example one must know [Fireball] to make a fire attributed weapon. For anti-divination magic there are not many who study it. Ainz sees Fluder's valid point, as one needs to be careful on which spells to learn, unlike in YGGDRASIL, where one could divide up such roles in magic.
Seeing that he was wrong, Ainz admits to Fluder that divination magic would be a low priority in regards to offensive and defensive magic. So to amend this, Ainz plans to give Fluder an anti-divination item to ward himself.
The Sorcerer King then arrives in Fluder's chamber, where the old man immediately prostates himself before teh undead, calling his teacher. The Sorcerer King beckons Fluder to rise up and speak to him normally as he finds the servile attitude by the human to be a bit excessive and abnormal. To him it's too much like the attitude he is used to in the Great Tomb of Nazarick.
Fluder still finds the difference between him and his teacher to be a huge gap and refuses allowed to sit as equals, but is convinced by Ainz's insistence. Now finally engaging in a dialogue, Ainz asks if Fluder has completed the task he assigned him. That being transcribing the internal affairs of the other nations that the Empire has contact with. Fluder reports that he has, though adds that the emperor has noticed his betrayal.
The fact that Fluder has been found out is something that Ainz does not mind, though he asks if human's safety is at risk. These words touch Fluder, impressed that his teacher was concerned for his safety. It is explained no such moves have been made to eliminate him, but Fluder's influence in the Empire is being diminished. Normally Fluder was a confidant of the emperor, but since returning from the underground tomb that Ainz ruled over, the emperor has not summoned him once.
Ainz hearing this, then asks Fluder if he would like to come with him, an offer Fluder immediately jumps at. In consideration of Fluder's position, Ainz talks about the wizard's reward, which was to give him a piece of his knowledge. To that end the Sorcerer King takes out from his Item Box, the Book of the Dead and gives it to Fluder.
The old wizard accepts the book, and wastes no time flipping through the pages. But sadly finds that he cannot read any of the words in the book. When Ainz learns the problem, he hands Fluder his magic glasses. Accepting the item, Fluder is able to read the book and almost immediately becomes excited by its contents on the principle of the soul. While he finds his reward to be everything what he expected, Ainz has him return the glasses. At first apprehensive of being denied the knowledge, Ainz tells Fluder that translating the book on his own is part of his training, promising that once he does so he will rise to the next level.
Hearing these words from his teacher, Fluder is brought to tears and obeys his command. Should he require any assistance in his studies, Ainz also promises to assist. But he also tells Fluder to not reveal anything about his notes and books he will give him, so as to ensure that they never fall in the hands of a third party. The Sorcerer King does not wish for Fluder to disappoint him, to which Fluder reflexively prostates to show his obedience. Still the reaction to Ainz is disturbing and tells Fluder to return to his seat. Fluder apologizes and states that he will translate the book little by little using a translation magic.
Back on their discussion, Ainz wants to know when Fluder can leave the Empire. If that is what Ainz wishes, the wizard replies that he can leave anytime as he no longer has any attachment to his nation. Ainz finds it a pity for one to throw all responsibility, but keeps it to himself. Well no matter as Ainz intends for Fluder to be involved in magical development projects in the Sorcerer Kingdom. However he tells Fluder none of his magical knowledge will be allowed outside the kingdom, as only he and the old wizard, along with his closest associates will know and develop the new technology. This means that Fluder will receive no fame, and the undead asks how does that make him felt? Though the loss does not trouble Fluder, as he only has the one wish to see the abyss of magic.
The answer satisfies Ainz, who then informs Flude that once he comes over to the Sorcerer Kingdom, he will entrust full authority of magic development to the wizard with full cooperation. And with this Nazarick will have gained another human collaborator. While acknowledging he has gained another ally, Ainz's thoughts lingers on the unknown enemy who brainwashed Shalltear, supposedly possessing a World Item. The Sorcerer King wants to quickly obtain more power outside the resources from YGGDRASIL and devise a strategy. The more allies the better, Nazarick will be prepared. And though Demiurge had once said that the Baharuth Empire was a potential enemy, Ainz wants to make the Empire an ally if possible. Personally the undead wants to become friends with Emperor Jircniv. To convey to his subordinates that a friendship that transcends national boundaries is possible, rather than using force like Demiurge.
Having a desire to merge the Sorcerer Kingdom with the Empire as smoothly as possible, Ainz gives Fluder new directives. To that end he wants to prevent a decline in the Empire's national power that would result in Fluder's disappearance. So for now he is to remain in the Empire. The old human heeds his master's order, before Ainz brings up two new items to discuss, one being about the Martial Lord and Death Knights.
Sometime later, at an impressive mansion, a masked Ainz and Pluton are guided inside by a human butler and a rabbit eared maid. The butler greets the guildmaster who maid the appointment, and also Ainz who he recognizes to be the Sorcerer King. This comes as a shock as Ainzach made no mention of Ainz's identity or that he would be part of this meeting. The butler states that his master is waiting and guides the two to him.
While they are guide through the mansion, Ainzach remarks his surprise that a Rabbit Man is working at the place, as they normally live out east, and not in the Empire which is unusual. They are directed to a wing of the mansion filled with a collection of weapons and armor. Ainz takes notice of one of the items, a beautiful sword. The master of the mansion, a bald fate man, appearing behind the Sorcerer King notices his masked guest's interest, allows him to pick it up an examine it. The Overlord sees that there are runes carved into the sword. The master of the mansion hearing Ainz mutter about the runes, is excited thinking that Ainz is aware of the characters. Though truthfully Ainz does not and wonders why such characters are in the New World.
He inquires about the craftsman who made the sword, which the man is more than happy to illuminate on. The sword was a product of a runesmith of the Dwarf Kingdom in the Azerlisia Mountains, made over a 150 year ago. It is a sword that can contain lightning and was made by a famous dwarven rune workshop, Stonenel Workshop. The information on the runes and dwarves perks Ainz's interest. He asks if there are any other similar weapons from the famous workshop, though is told that they are not present but stored somewhere else. The one present is only on displayed because it has magical abilities.
Ainzach remarks that runesmith weapons are rarely available in the market, and finds it impressive that the man has more. The fat man laughs replying that whenever one goes up for auction, he always snatches them up. The other day the man had to compete in bidding for a runesmith weapon with a persistent adventurer and caused him costing him three times what he expected to pay.
The great amount of money spent disgusts Ainzach, though Ainz is far more focused on the existence of the runes, wondering if they are evidence of a player's involvement. Seeing that he has yet to know the name of his host, the Sorcerer King offers his apologies for failing to ask his name. The man takes no offense, complimenting the sovereign's eloquent speech and introduces himself as Osk, a humble merchant. Ainz removes his mask, revealing his undead face and offers his own introductions.
Upon seeing the Sorcerer King is an undead, Osk remains unafraid and even jokes of how worried he was on deciding which tea to prepare for Ainz but it seems to be unnecessary. Ainzach though is curious to know how Osk knew Ainz was coming. To Osk it was not difficult to work out, as Ainzach is the leader of the Adventurer's Guild in E-Rantel which is ruled by the Sorcerer King, and now being accompanied by someone of higher rank. There was only one person who came in Osk's mind.
At the beginning of the conversation, Ainz asks if the weapons on display were ever used by Osk himself. The merchant is amused by this question, given his fat body, stating he never held a sword before only a calculator. He explains that ever since he was young he has always admired the strong. Additionally he has a hobby of collecting weapons.
Osk inquires about Ainz and his long life, curious about any ancient weapons or items in his possession. The Overlord confirms he does have such caliber items, though he cannot give such things out. But Osk offers to pay a reasonable price or even three times the price for such items. Though Ainz does not find money to be attractive so Osk asks what he could offer him.
Ainz takes the opportunity to reach within his Item Box, and obtains a opulent shortsword to the amazement of the two men. The Sorcerer King gifts the item to the guildmaster as a reward for his hard work to him. If the human does not accept him, he gives Ainzach the option to sell the item for money. The veteran adventurer accepts the item gratefully, swearing to continue serving him.
Osk envious of the item, congratulates Ainzach, though subtly reminds him that if he ever needs any help to remember him as a friend, much to the guildmaster's distress. Back to the conversation Ainz uses this as an example of giving items as rewards to Osk for services, Now on the meat of the matter, the merchant then asks what brings Ainz to his home. To his Ainz answers that he wishes to fight the Martial Lord in the Grand Arena.
Ainz's request begets a hearty laugh from the merchant, as he claims that the Martial Lord is the strongest in history. And who would he pit against the Martial Lord? He is answered by Ainz that he himself would do so. This brings silence to Osk and later incredulity as Ainz is a king of a nation who is allied to the Empire. If anything were to happen to the Sorcerer King, it would affect Osk's business. Though the Overlord promises the merchant he will not inconvenience him.
Osk reveals that as a promoter of the area, he collects information on the strongest opponents and monsters on a daily basis. And among the rumors were about Ainz. So he asks if it is true that Ainz used a single spell to kill tens of thousands of the Kingdom's citizens. This brings shock to Ainzach, but the undead calmly wonders aloud if Osk is criticizing him, though the merchant nervously clarifies that he is not as he only thought such magic being used in the arena would be bad. Ainz tells Osk he will noy use that kind of magic.
Ainz explains that the spell he used was his strongest trump card as it was requested by Nimble, one of the Imperial Knights. And then lies that the spell was so great that it can only be used once every ten years, thus Ainz must save his power before he could cast a spell of that magnitude. The reason behind this lie, is in case any other players use "Iä Shub-Niggurath" and prevent people from associating him with the spell.
Hearing this information, Osk asks the Sorcerer King if it is alright to be telling him, as it could be a weakness. The Sorcerer King is not concerned as it's not as if he can't use magic anymore. The merchant then queries why the Sorcerer King wants to fight the Martial Lord. Ainz responds by saying that he heard the Martial Lord is a strong opponent and that he wants to know if he is stronger than Gazef Stronoff, complimenting the deceased warrior of being an enviable strong man, especially his strength of mind.
Osks accepts this and understands and agrees to set up a match between Ainz Ooal Gown and the Martial Lord. However he requests that the Sorcerer King follow the rules of the arena, that he must fight without magic and using only weapons. Ainzach objects to this as Ainz is a magic caster, but is rebuked by Osk that this is suppose to be a show, so a one-sided fight will not be interesting. The former adventurer tries to voice his reservation, but to Ainz it does not matter as he is willing to accept the restrictions, and swear by his name that he will not use magic.
Ainzach still tries to advise Ainz against this, but his liege believes that everything will be fine. Even so the human worries about the possible dangers, which Ainz finds appreciative. Since there will likely be interference if the name of the challenger is revealed, Osk plans to keep Ainz's participation a secret and will announce it at a proper time for the match. He then asks a little more of Ainz's time to schedule the date.
After Osk's guests leave the mansion, he asks his Rabbit Man maid, Headhunter Rabbit, on what the demi-human though about the Sorcerer King. The demi-human reveals two scarred hands that are shaking uncontrollably. Osk then lingers his eyes on those hands, disturbing the demi-human who calls the merchant out for being a pervert. As it turns out Osk has a fixation for those with muscles, and admits that the demi-human is too slim for his tastes, preferring someone like the thick bodied Gagaran. Headhunter Rabbit answers that he will not be renewing his contract next year, which causes Osk to return back to the main point of the conversation, such as what did the Rabbit Man think of Ainz Ooal Gown. The demi-human gives Osk an answer that it's "extremely bad."
Tthe butler asks why Osk accept the Sorcerer King's request for a match? The undead appears to known about the Martial Lord, and yet they know nothing of his capabilities, leaving them at a disadvantage. The sentiment is shared by Headhunter Rabbit. The merchant tells them that their champion if given a challenge is not one who runs from a challenger. Besides there is no way to run away which Osk thinks that the Martial Lord will agree with. That being said, Headhunter Rabbit thinks that it would be nice if the Martial Lord did win.
On the day of the match, Osk approaches the massive form of the Martial Lord, asking if he is fine, which the giant responds that there is no problem and that he is in his best condition.
