This is the seventy-seventh chapter of the Overlord Manga.
Summary[]
Brain Unglaus and Climb stare in horror as they watch Gazef Stronoff's body falls forward. The Warrior Captain is caught by Ainz Ooal Gown as they shout their disbelief on what just happened, refusing the outcome. Brain pleads for Gazef to get up, but receives no answer from the lifeless corpse as Ainz, closes Gazef's eyes and gently lays the human on the ground. The Sorcerer King remarks that he can remember the time when he saw Gazef challenge a battle with no chance of winning.
As a tribute to the Warrior Captain, Ainz will recall the Dark Young from pursuing the soldiers of the Kingdom. He offers to assist in returning Gazef's body so that it can be given a proper burial. But Brain states that he and Climb will undertake the task.
Ainz acknowledges this and informs them that the instant death spell he used on Gazef, [True Death] will invalidate lower-tier resurrection magic. He also gives them a message to pass to the people of the Kingdom, that he will be merciful to those who submit to him respectfully. The Sorcerer Kingdom mounts his Dark Young and adds them they best pass the message to the king that the lands of E-Rantel be ceded to him or else he will let the Dark Young rampage in the Royal Capital.
The Sorcerer King and his summons then retreat from the battlefield. After they leave, Brain asks Climb to grant him one request, to allow him the duty of carrying his former rival's body. Climb agrees as he will be carry Gazef's sword. While the two walk through the plains, Climb spots the corpses around them, and grimly comments that many died in the massacre. Brain himself doesn't understand it either. Though if someone like Ainz calls himself a king and claimed this territory, Brain predicts that in the future a war will definitely break out and the dead may outnumber the ones around them. Climb following behind the former mercenary clenches Razor Edge, and understanding the hardships that will come swears to protect Renner.
Later on a cold night in E-Rantel, Brain stares from a tower with Razor Edge at his side. His mind ruminates on how nothing really matter anymore. Thinking about Ainz Ooal Gown, the mercenary concludes that the undead is a monster of the same caliber as Shalltear Bloodfallen. Brain believes that Gazef knew that, but despite the difference in power, the Warrior Captain still choose to face Ainz. Yet Brain doesn't understand why his old rival chose death even when the undead monster gave him the option of life.
Becoming frustrated on Gazef's choice, he raises Razor Edge and activates the Martial Arts, [Fourfold Slash of Light], Gazef's signature technique. Brain confesses to Gazef, that he admired him so much so that he wanted to die with him, so he can't comprehend by the Warrior Captain didn't allow him to fight by his side.
Climb approaches and muses that Brain has yet to cry, which may be due to him getting older. Brain comes out of his fugue and manages to respond to the joke stating that the pain of losing someone has nothing to do with age. Brain has Climb to explain what has transpired since they last met.
The young man reports that Prince Barbro has yet to return so there is a plan to hire adventurers to launch a search party. Next in regards to the ceding of E-Rantel, there is no objection by the king nor the nobles. Hearing this surprises Brain who wonders what the future has in store for the Kingdom.
Brain also shares his thoughts to Climb of his incomprehension of why Gazef challenged Ainz knowing he had no chance of winning. From Climb, the warrior believes Gazef did so at his own volition so that he can show the two what Ainz was capable of. So that they could have a future.
Brain is in shock as he never thought that Gazef would do something like that. Now that his turmoil over Gazef's death has been resolved, Brain still has one question, how he will live now?
On the revival of Gazef, Climb asks if Gazef would want to be revived. Brain though states that the man wasn't the kind to have a second life. Though apparently the king did not accept it. Regardless Brain states that Gazef won't come back. Even so after all this talk Brain still can't understand what Gazef was thinking as he should have revived to pledge his loyalty to the king once more.
However Brain asks Climb if he ever dies, that he not be revived, as he is not happy with how he lived and he doesn't feel he could go on with it. Climb though would choose revival to be by Renner's side. This news is not surprising to Brain, who figured that the young man would choose otherwise. Their is lamentation by Brain of no longer having a chance to fight Gazef, and asks himself of what he should do now. He considers about either carrying on Gazef's will or abandoning it. In the end he decides the former and raises Razor Edge to the night sky, declaring to Gazef that he chose the easy way out and swears to surpass him. That being said, Brain grabs Climb to go out and drink.
In E-Rantel, bells rings as a convoy of Death Knights and Death Warriors, led by Albedo escort a palanquin into the city. The residents of the city who had remained behind, cower from their windows and doors as they watch the unholy parade. All except a young boy who in the streets throws a stone at the entourage. His mark falls short of the group, but he catches Albedo's attention. The boy calls out to the demon as a monster and demanding them to give him back his father, before his mother seizes him from behind to silence him. On her knees the woman begs that Albedo forgive her son. Albedo is not swayed stating even ten thousand deaths would not suffice for the disrespect to her master as he takes out her halberd. The mother desperate tries to offer her own life, but Albedo states that her master dislikes taking the "innocent" and tells the human to accept the mincemeat that her son will become.
Just as Albedo swings her weapon unto the mother and son, her blow is deflected by a great sword that was thrown at her. Momon appears calmly demanding if such a punishment is really fair? Albedo though states that it is still a sin that must be addressed regardless of age. When Momon asks what if he refuses such a decision, Albedo warns the armored warrior that he will be labeled a traitor and eliminated. Momon taking it as a challenge prepares for battle, however before they clash. Ainz Ooal Gown appears from the palanquin and whispers into Albedo's ear.
Albedo then asks the warrior his name, which he does. Albedo relays her master's proposal, that Momon swear fealty to Ainz Ooal Gown. Momon thinks she is joking but Albedo clarifies that Ainz desires not to rule the city with despair and bloodshed. She warns that in the future there may be more foolish people who may throw stones at Ainz. And it will be Momon's duty to execute them as the Sorcerer Kingd' enforcer. Momon rejects swearing to such an evil tyrant, but Albedo coerces Momon to accept by threatening the lives of the people in the city. The Dark Warrior accepts the invitation to become AInz's enforcer as he is attached to the city, but refuses to bend a knee to his new master, warning that if any harm comes to the people in the city, his sword will be raised against them,
Albedo accepts the words nonchalantly stating she looks forward to when the city rises against them. The entourage soon marches away, which then the people watching from afar in their homes, start appearing and gathering around Momon, thanking him for his bravery. The mother begins slapping her son for doing something so stupid. It takes Momon's intervention to stop her, before directing his attention to the crowd and makes a plea to them to stay their hands from revolting and that he will still be their ally while watching the Sorcerer King's actions. Some citizens though are waiting for Momon to call them to raise arms against the Sorcerer King, but the Dark Warrior advises against that as that action is what Albedo wants so that she can force him to kill any rebels. He urges that what they can do now is seeing how things play out and opens the possibility that rule under the Sorcerer Kingdom may not be all that bad. However he asks the citizens to inform him if there any any signs of incitement.
A few days after the transfer of E-Rantel to the Sorcerer Kingdom, Albedo in Ainz Ooal Gown's chambers lays on his bed taking in his "scent". While the pillows and bedsheets are odorless, Albedo revels in the lingering presence of her master. The Overseer Guardian has been working on training the undead to act as bureaucrats for their new capital and though serving Ainz is her greatest pleasure, a question dawns on what path Ainz intends to lead their new nation.
