This is the seventy-sixth chapter of the Overlord Manga.
Summary[]
Upon hearing Gazef Stronoff's request for a one-on-one duel, Ainz Ooal Gown asks the Warrior Captain if he is serious. The human states that he is, despite knowing that he will die, causing Ainz to wonder if Gazef is suicidal. Ainz tells Gazef that originally he had no intention of killing Gazef, but the human's logic is confounding as he sees the purpose of the duel pointless as Gazef has no way to defeat him.
Gazef merely answers that he is just taking advantage of pointing his sword at the enemy king since he is within range. Ainz admits that while the distance between them has narrowed, he still has to contend with an obstacle and indicates to the Dark Young looming behind him, which at the undead's subtle order strikes a tentacle just beside the Warrior Captain to display its power. Despite the overwhelming display of force, Gazef is not undaunted. This causes AInz to asks if the man is trying to push is luck when he said that he would not kill him. Gazef laughs and states that he is only doing this as the Warrior Captain of the Kingdom.
Ainz warns that if they do duel, then he will not hold back, and yet Gazef still show no sign of backing out. To Ainz he finds that it is a pity that he cannot change the human's mind, because as a collector he detests eliminating rare specimens.
The Warrior Captain then restates his formal challenge to the Sorcerer King for a one-on-one duel, this time adding Brain Unglaus and Climb to serve as witnesses. Brain protests this as he wants to die alongside his old rival and pleads with the Sorcerer King to allow him to duel him with Gazef. Gazef though shouts at him not to insult his determination as a warrior as he intends to duel alone. Ainz is indifferent in having the two fight against him as it makes no difference.
The Warrior Captain asks that he does not accept Brain's request and only hopes that the Sorcerer King will spare his two friends. Ainz admiring the determined eyes of Gazef, accepts his one-time ally's proposal. Hearing the undead accept terms causes Brain to kneel in despair. Ainz begins to promise Gazef that in the event of his death, he will preserve the corpse and prepare it for resurrection, but the offer is declined by Gazef. The Warrior Captain has no wish to be revived and doesn't care of what happens to his body afterwards. Part of the motivation for Gazef's intent to die is to soften the hatred of the royal family for the loss of so many of the Kingdom's people.
To Climb and especially Brain, Gazef's asks them to witness his last battle. Brain is despondent at Gazef's words, but Climb offers some words of encouragement to his friend to honor Gazef's last wish. The mercenary with a heavy heart acknowledges this and stands proud to see Gazef's defining moment. Before a battle can commence, Ainz makes a surprise request to examine Gazef's sword. To the shock of Brain, Gazef's acquiesces and presents Ainz the handle of his blade. At first Brain thinks Gazef is giving up, but Gazef chastises him saying such disgraceful things as Ainz is not that kind of person. Ainz uses magic to analyze Razor Edge, before handing it back to Gazef. He is impressed by the item and inquires if Gazef knows it full capabilities. Gazef tells Ainz that understands that the sword has Incredible sharpness, capable of cutting through metal like paper.
Gazef is left dumbfounded when Ainz tells him that is only the partial capabilities of Razor Edge. In fact Ainz claims that the sword is a weapon that can potentially kill him. It is fortunate as Gazef has a small chance to defeat him for their duel. To explain he uses a small shortsword and drags it across his skeletal face, leaving no damage. He explains that the sword he used on himself has the same amount of data or mana as Razor Edge and was not able to hurt him, but for Razor Edge it defies everything what he knows. Now very interested in that sword, Ainz asks if he can have it, when he defeats Gazef, but is turned down as the sword is a national treasure and not Gazef's to give. Disappointed, Ainz accepts that he cannot take the item and will honor Gazef's request to not plunder it.
The Sorcerer King moves five meters back to allow for some room for his duel with Gazef. He then asks Climb to act as the initiator of the duel. Climb is uncomfortable of being given the task of signal Gazef's death, but at the urging of his friend Gazef he accepts and will use one of his magic handbells as the signal. Climb dreads that this will be Gazef's last battle, but Brain thinks differently as he believes in Gazef. In fact he believes Gazef and will use his trump card of Sixfold Slash of Light a secret art taught to the Warrior Captain by the famed retired adamantite adventurer Vesture Kloff Di Laufen and which far surpasses his technique of Nail Clipper. If that's the case then defeating Ainz Ooal Gown could be within Gazef Stronoff's reach.
Climb starts the duel with the sound of his handbell. Just as Gazef moves, Ainz casts [Silent Time Stop] to halt his opponent. And then casts the 9th tier spell, [Delay Magic: True Death], before saying farewell to Gazef and that he never hated him. Gazef's lifeless body falls and is stopped by Ainz, but not before Razor Edge drops to the ground useless.
