"Invasion of the Royal Capital" (王都侵攻 Ōtō Shinkō) is the twelfth episode of the Overlord IV adaptation. It was first broadcasted on September 20, 2022.
Summary[]
In Nazarick, as Pandora's Actor recounts his kneeling and Riku Aganeia's stopping his attack, Albedo questions in irate attention if their maser would ever do that, as while Pandora feels he wouldn't, Ainz Ooal Gown voices that he does not mind and approves Pandora's Actor's efforts as nothing was lost in misdirecting the enemy. However, Ainz cannot fully understand Riku's "World Isolating Barrier" as it was breached by Albedo's Ginnungagap and functioned like a World Item spell, akin to Depiction of Nature and Society. Pandora's Actor notes Riku's HP dropping on casting the barrier as the power could be a skill instead, and Ainz concurs, having never heard of a World Item draining HP for activation. With Riku's HP dropping when using skills, Ainz reiterates how World Items have various uses, such as the one in his abdominal cavity. Still, with the distinctions of spells cast, there's no certainty of Riku using a world item. When Ainz states that he believes another staged defeat to Riku is prudent, he shocks his guardians-- including Demiurge and Shalltear beside him-- even though he clarifies he doesn't like intentional defeat either, as they need to do everything to achieve absolute victory. To himself, Ainz is aware of NPC and New World inhabitants being able to revive from death, but Ainz doesn't want to risk testing on himself, considering the Six Great Gods and the Eight Greed Kings were also Players like him. Thus, to Ainz, any loss without his death is an acceptable loss. He gets up to head out to the Royal Capital, informing the inquisitive Albedo about holding certain standards as a villain, like Ulbert Alain Odle.
In the capital, the women of Renner's orphanage thank her for feeding the children and cry at her dedicated and caring spirit. In the carriage to the castle, Renner notes the hypocrisy of helping children knowing the Sorcerer Kingdom's forces will arrive soon, but Climb reminds her that she helped the children smile by delivering them food, bringing a smile to her face as well. At Ro-Lente Castle, Renner meets with Blue Roses, and Evileye suggests to Lakyus that they have a cup of tea, not wanting to offend Princess Renner. But they note there's not enough for everyone, including the imposing Gagaran, and Lakyus is told by Renner that her party is trying to give her more time with her as it'll be their last meeting, so Lakyus lets the twins accompany Brain to the kitchen to prepare some more. Tia returns before them, reenters after having sensed nobody nearby and pours Lakyus the tea she made. Despite the strong odor, Lakyus still drinks from Tia's insistence, only to find it poisoned before being stabbed by a needle. Gagaran then wallops the weakened Lakyus as Tia stabs Lakyus in the right spots, having studied her for years. Signaling Evileye, the mage's [Resist Weakling] spell fails, so Gagaran ad Tia attack again to weaken Lakyus from being affected by [Resist Weakling] to then control her with [Charm Person].
As Lakyus is ordered to heal herself, Evileye is impressed by Renner's not being scared by the scene, and the princess counters that she wouldn't be deducing they had a reason and asks for said reason. Evileye states that Blue Roses cared more for Lakyus than Re-Estize but knew Lakyus would sacrifice herself to protect the capital, alone even had they voiced their want to escape, but all their efforts came down to luck and planning. As they aim to teleport out of the capital upon Tina's return to a ruined land far east, they invite Renner and Climb but are denied out of their duty. Tina returns with Brain a moment later, and despite the blood, he doesn't intervene as Renner tells him there's nothing to worry about. When Evileye asks the same question to escape, Brain refuses as he won't run anymore, much to Evileye's expectations, and she uses [Teleportation] on the party to relocate. Handling Climb Razor Edge, Brain seeks to challenge the Sorcerer King to a duel if he can get past his army. Although Climb wants him to stay, Renner tells him Brain made his choice, and Brain is thankful for meeting Climb and Sebas for helping him be a better man. After Brain leaves, Climb curses out the Sorcerer King before Renner grabs his attention, needing his help to fulfill her duty as a member of the Royal Family. Before bringing the sword to her father, Renner asks to wield it for a moment and shows an aptitude before claiming it isn't for her, while Climb notes she can surpass him with training.
At the capital city gates, a rampart section freezes and explodes as Cocytus walks forward into the city with no resistance. At the watch, Aura Bella Fiora effortlessly climbs to the top to situate the city layout according to her map. As Aura's pets snarled at the frightened guards, Aura finds the magician's guild before two guards flee in panic and Iris intercepts them with a roar that kills the guards. Aura tells the beasts to stop berating Iris before they commence their assault. Still, as Iris is too big, Aura orders her to rampage along the ramparts to stomp upon any humans she comes across, much to the tyrannosaurus's glee. Once they're squared away, Aura leads most of her pets while Iris carries out the mission Aura gave her. In the city, Brain walks down a street wondering how to find the Sorcerer King and sees the frightened citizens hiding in their homes who couldn't flee. Pondering how the civilians could have caused quite a commotion had they come out to fight, Brain then remarks how events would be different if Gazef was still around. Coming to a stop, Brain sees frigid air coming his way before seeing a monster within the mist, deciding there and then to fight it. As Cocytus marches on, he spots Brain ahead of him, drinking three potions for a fighting chance, and he comes to a stop seeing Brain with blade drawn. As Brain considers how easy it is for the monster before him to destroy the capital without care or considering the massacre resulting from that, Brain states his name and is now ready to challenge Cocytus.
Halting the Frost Virgins behind him, he reciprocates and declares his name to his challenger, and Brain bows in warrior's respect and gratitude, which Cocytus states are unnecessary. Planting his Halberd to equip his God Slaying Emperor Blade and taking a stance with his sword readied, as Brain prepares his iaido stance while recalling Sebas's word on seeking life when facing death. After Brain plans to cut off Cocytus's arms, aiming to keep him from sacrificing his life in one hit, he casts [Field] and buffs himself with [Ability Boost] and [Greater Ability Boost]. As a ready Cocytus steps forward, Brain unleashes his True Nail Clipper technique only to be defeated in the one sword strike he hoped to prevent. Victorious, Cocytus removes Brain's blood before returning his sword to inventory, amazed someone of his level was in the kingdom, considering him a possible asset to Nazarick had he been recruited beforehand. Not wanting to embarrass a warrior's resolve, believing Warrior Takemikazuchi would agree, he claims Brain's katana as a trophy and orders the Frost Virgins to preserve Brain's body in ice. However, with Brain's preserved body directly in his path, Cocytus circles around the immediate street area of Brain's fall, treading around the sacred sight of an honorably felled warrior. With a final look at Brain's frozen form, Cocytus resumes his mission to head to Ro-Lente,
