"In Pursuit of the Land of Dwarves" (ドワーフの国を求めて Dowāfu no Kuni o Motomete) is the fifth episode of the Overlord IV adaptation. It was first broadcasted on August 2, 2022.

Summary[]

Demiurge returns to the Great Tomb of Nazarick seeking to request permission from Ainz Ooal Gown about a scheme against the Roble Holy Kingdom but finds Albedo, who tells him Ainz is out. While he plans to conduct experiments on the Seventh Floor until his master returns, Albedo notes he could simply use [Message] and inform Ainz, to which Demiurge admits he simply wanted praise from Ainz. The smug Albedo informs Demiurge that Ainz has traveled to the Dwarf Kingdom, perplexing the strategist as to why his master would venture to somewhere so remote, and both attest that Ainz is playing a strategy beyond their understanding. Albedo brings up how Ainz would sometimes mention Demiurge's name, with the succubus claiming Ainz may have an issue with the plan for world domination. Demiurge demands an explanation, to which Albedo inquires into how long he'd have taken to vassalize the Baharuth Empire before the Re-Estize Kingdom, and Demiurge admits his plan would have taken a month. However, Demiurge is flabbergasted once Albedo hands him the Empire's vassalization papers, and she tells him that Ainz subjugated the Empire with nary a fatality within a three-day visit. Given that Ainz left the vassalization process to the two, Albedo postulates that Ainz did so to tell Demiurge he trusts him and that he was likely too reserved when asking permission. Demiurge is stunned right in the feels and concurs with Albedo that Ainz has a deeply layered plot in mind.

In the Great Lake Lizardman village, Ainz seeks a diplomatic envoy for the dwarves in the hopes of attaining their rare materials and Runecraft and will take Aura as his head bodyguard with Shalltear as tank support. Ainz calls on Cocytus for the Lizardman who once ventured to the Dwarf Kingdom, so Cocytus directs him to Zenberu Gugu, who asks if Ainz does seek peaceful talks as he doesn't wish to repay a past kindness with malice. Cocytus grows incensed, but Ainz forgives the matter needing a guide and clarifies his genuine want for diplomatic talks but will use force if attacked. Cocytus then offers Ainz a seat if he plans to have a lengthy talk, offering himself as a chair similar to Shalltear's past position so Ainz obliges, unable to abate Cocytus's fervent insistence, and grows more emotionally suppressed with Cocytus's questioning if he is a better chair than Shalltear as part of his training. Ainz calls out to Takemikazuchi in his head, similarly to before with Bukubukuchagama about the twins. Later, Shalltear goes over a list and finds the delegation is ready to head out, and Aura asks why she's so focused on the details. Shalltear doesn't want to risk another mistake and shame Ainz, so she is being extra cautious in hopes of proving to Ainz and others that she's useful, feeling insecure that she's only been managing the [Gate] system. Aura harkens back to E-Rantel, where Ainz appointed her and Shalltear for the mission, telling Aura that the experience is meant to help Shalltear grow individually to learn from her mistakes. Aura tells Shalltear this, but she is unsure what to learn, with Ainz a short distance away reminiscing about Bukubukuchagama and Peroroncino arguing.

Zenburu informs Ainz that the convoy is ready, and Ainz sees Zaryusu Shasha next to Crusch Lulu holding their child close to her, as Ainz thinks to himself that he's not gonna snatch her child away, but he wouldn't mind having one if they made more since they're so rare. After setting a course, the convoy reaches far into the Azerlisia Mountains where Ainz uses [Create Fortress] to make camp for the night. In his quarters, Ainz thinks to himself about Runes in the New World questioning if a player brought them from YGGDRASIL. Still, he wants the technology, and coming personally to establish diplomatic ties shows sincerity while Demiurge and Albedo deal with the vassalization of Baharuth, heated as to why Jircniv would surprise him with the request. Pondering if Demiurge did anything behind the scenes, he tables the thought as he trusts his guardians to handle it. Outside Ainz's room, Aura asks Shalltear to pick a room, and the vampire accepts whichever room Aura doesn't choose. Asking about her notes, Aura sees Shalltear wrote every detail Ainz did on their way over and asks if her notes are helping, which Shalltear doesn't know. Fatigued, Aura chooses a room and finds Shalltear to be a dumb little sister now, praying to her creator to watch over Shalltear on their expedition. Come morning, Zenburu brings Ainz to the entrance to the Dwarf city he visited, and Ainz orders the five Hanzo on duty to scout the city. When they reported that it was abandoned, they confirmed someone alone was mining further ahead, so Aura went to greet him and frightened him too.

The Dwarf explains that the city of Feo Raidho was abandoned, and the people fled to Feo Jera three years earlier, then drops the invisibility as Aura can see him and introduces himself as Gondo Firebeard. Explaining the trek to Feo Jera is six days, Gondo asks where is Aura's party and after she tells him they stayed by the entrance, as it would be rude to barge in as a group. As Gondo felt is was improper for an adult to send a child, an eavesdropping Ainz makes himself known so as to agree, startling Gondo for a moment before he calmed down to realize he was Aura's master. After Ainz elaborates on his Sorcerer Kingdom, he explains his visit was to make trade deals with the Dwarves for their Runecraft as they are slightly different from the symbols he knows. With Gondo intrigued, Ainz carves a rune into a stone that Gondo confirms as 'Lagu,' a mid-tier rune, and Ainz wanted to know how to attain Runes as they stopped selling in the human nations a century or two before. Gondo elaborates as they walk out the tunnel that the reason Runecraft went into a steep decline was when Tier Magic became the norm. Gondo comes from a Runesmith family, as magic items in the past used to be forged with Runecraft, and while Tier Magic was easier to learn and took less time, Runecraft was cheaper to make. Ainz is pleased to hear, considering many magic items take expensive ingredients, and Gondo knows that Runecraft would be invaluable if it were revived. But while Gondo did not inherit his father's skill at Runes, he refuses to let it pass into history while the other Dwarves are often drunk in despair and hopes to teach runes to his children someday.

Hearing Gondo's aim to keep his father's great name alive strikes a chord in Ainz, who offers his patronage and plans to gather all Runesmiths under Gondo's leadership in exchange for Gondo's service to Ainz; Gondo gladly accepts the offer. Outside the tunnel, Gondo is shocked to see Ainz's convoy, and Shalltear reports that scouts located a hundred unknown demi-humans. Gondo asks if they are Quagoa, the demi-humans who forced the Dwarves to abandon the city, and who eat rare metals in their youth to mature into stronger fighters with pelts as strong as the metals they eat, doubling as armor. Intrigued, Ainz orders Shalltear to capture them and, after forming a plan with the Hanzos, succeeds with [Mass Hold Species] while the Hanzos confirm all the Quagoa were captured. Pleased, Ainz then orders Shalltear to gather intelligence from the Quagoa while the horde leader refuses cooperation until Shalltear uses [Charm Species]. The charmed Quagoa unintentionally offends her, but Ainz interjects to keep his control going and Shalltear asks what the Quagoa's aim in the abandoned city was. Explaining that they serve their Clan Lord Pe Riyuro and that they were to kill any Dwarves fleeing after the attack on the city up north. Shocking Gondo, the Quagoa troop leader looks at him with malice to happily speak that his people found a bypass around the Great Rift leading to the city, and the fortress protecting the connecting bridge will be destroyed soon enough with his people eradicated after that.
