The Supreme Beginner (至高の初心者) is the eighty-eighth chapter of the Overlord: The Undead Oh! series

Summary[]

While fighting against a mob of golems, Bukubukuchagama tells her guildmates that there's been a buzz in the YGGDRASIL forum about a streamer who's been a hot topic in the last few days. Apparently the streamer is a famous person. Punitto Moe is excited by the news. Normally he streams PVP games, but decided to play YGGDRASIL due to its novelty.

Yamaiko for one is excited as if a celebrity could introduce YGGDRASIL elsewhere it would increase the population in the area. And Punitto Moe wonders if those who watch the stream will play YGGDRASIL afterwards. Though later there appears to be a problem as Player Killers are now rampant in the game. Peroroncino citing its not safe in the game and Momonga muses that with the stream there a lot more players but they end up getting hunted and so they are losing them as well. Punitto Moe guesses that this should have been expected, as PKers would have been attracted by the famous streamer. Though thankfully fans are guarding the streamer in the area to keep everyone safe.

However it seems that controversy in the comment section of the stream and on an anonymous message board. It seems at there are two camps, one being hey went out of their ay to take an interest, so don't make them feel bad" versus "Its's suppose be a game that posts high freedom, including PK, right?" For Momonga he understands both opinions, as he in the past kept on getting PKed, so much so that he got tired of the game and wanted to quit playing from it. Ironically he and his friends are on the side who are doing surprise attacks and PKs. In retrospect Peroroncino thinks PKing is fun to which Punitto Moe says that power changes people.

Peroroncino while taking out a golem with a shot from his bow, muses that if the streamer is really famous, then their fans will be bodyguard to protect them, They'll come through but admits it's though for beginners to start off in YGGDRASIL. Touch Me agrees as he slices a golem, citing that if one is targeted by newbie hunters then it will all be over. The only safe option would be to join a guild. Bukubukuchagama likes the idea of mentoring beginner players, imagining teaching a new slime player, liker her, all about YGGDRASIL. Even willing to donate her money and data crystals she has leftover. Touch Me though argues that is overdoing it as people would be put off by this.

Momonga while incinerating the attacking golems, states that it would be difficult to welcome newbie into Ainz Ooal Gown. Warrior Takemikazuchi though states that if they accidentally let in a spy and they leak out the guild's information then it would be the end. Such newbies exists and they are sent in from other guilds. Ulbert Alain Odle recalls that this what Three Burning Eyes, a guild created by players of paid information sites, who also sent spies into higher-ranking guilds to steal information.

Nishikienrai adds that besides sending spies to extract information, some players have been known to play as female characters, but in reality they were male, and used this visage to toy with the affections of male players. One thing led to another and those manipulated caused half their guild to be destroyed. While from Ulbert's perspective its funny, but it one's guild is target it would be hell. Punitto Moe voices that if they are to admit beginners into the guild, they must be trustworthy people like family members or friends of the current guild members. Peroroncino agrees so he asks Touch Me how old is his child, which the other player in flabbergasted hat the birdman want his offspring get introduced to YGGDRASIL. Bukubukuchagama asks maybe his spouse, but Touch Me says his wife is not interested. Warrior Takemikazuchi asks if he knows anyone he could suggest, some who's identity is a solid beginner?

The next day as if so happens, Bukubukuchagama comes with Peroroncino claiming her brother has lost his memory so they will be welcoming him as a beginner to YGGDRASIL. Momonga though can see that's definitely a lie. But Bukubukuchagama claims its true stating Peroroncino fell down and hit his head, losing his memories. Although everyone can see she is acting, commenting its a waste of voice acting talent. Still maintaining the ruse, Bukubukuchagama states that she thought maybe playing her favorite game would bring her brother's memories back.

Even so Momonga points out that if a person hit their head, bringing someone into a game is not proper. The same is said by Ulbert stating that a person should first get a health check and then rest. Peroroncino appears to be playing along, poorly pretending to be at a loss of his memories, which Ulbert and Momonga can plainly see. Bukubukuchagama ill maintains that their guild has been exposed to a brand new "newbie" so she suggests that they proceed as if they have one. Regardless some like Yamaiko are not sure if this qualifies. After all unless one is a real beginner to YGGDRASIL, it would have been fun to take them to high-level areas and level up at lightning speed. And as Ulbert points out what Peroroncino is now is a fake beginner, and his strength already perfected. But Momonga thinks they should ask Peroroncino if he would like to know anything if he was a new player. And receives an answer of wanting to look lewdly at monster girls, making Ulbert berate him to just log out and play a eroge game.

Luci★Fer interjects into conversation, stating if he was a beginner he would ask to be taken to a dungeon. If it was his first time, he would want to watch people get trampled because they can't adapt to the boss' attack patterns and gimmicks. In regards to this Momonga doesn't think that's a good way to have fun. Ulbert though would enjoy seeing that while having a drink, which Luci★Fer then suggests that they should do so together over a bottle. Momonga chastises then for making fun of beginners.

If it were up to Momonga he would take the newbies to see Nigredo without warning them. Depending on a person's resistance to horror it can serve as a test to make newbies withdraw who try to join the guild. Jokes asisde, Touch Men thinks that they should use this opportunity to seriously think how they would recruit newbies into the guild. Warrior Takemikazuchi considers that his friend who plays a different game might transfer to playing YGGDRASIL when he gets bored. Nishikienrai though asks what should they teach newbies hypothetically. Momonga suggests maybe they should instruct them to keep their nanomachines up. Since if remaining nanomachines in the body decrease in the real world, then a person might be forcibly ejected from the game. Nishikienrai notes that it's an important detail while playing YGGDRASIL, but asks wouldn't other peole now that as the knowledge is not just liited to the game.

Then Momonga suggest informing beginners about exclusive information on YGGDRASIL, such as the Mask of Envy which he pulls out. But no one want sto hear the sad story of how the undead player acquired it. It is argued by Warrior Takemikazuchi that the mask is something unique to YGGDRASIL, as it was an event item that could be acquired by spending more than two hours in YGGDRASIL between 7 PM and 10 PM on Christmas Eve. Both Warrior Takemikazuchi and Nishikienrai feel hilarious at the thought of Momonga playing through a holiday to such an extent, more so even when both the two other players log in and are fans of the game. In any event Punitto Moe states that not many beginners would be interested in acquiring weird stuff like the mask, and probably would prefer not to know.

Punitto Moe tells his guildmates that if they want to instruct a beginner, they will have to do it step by step, and using a daily routine of content. Ulbert though believes that they have to be selective on what knowledge they give out to beginners. So they should be careful not to tell them everything. In short avoid giving away too many spoliers. Warrior Takemikazuchi and Bukubukuchagama are not sure if that applies.

Ulbert especially names out Touch Me for beginners to be wary of, leaving the latter confused on why he was singled out. The reason for that is due to Herohero being busy during his company's peak season, he hadn't gone to any newly discovered dungeons. Ulbert had arranged for Herohero to participate in a dungeon-clearing event estimated to take two weeks. Herohero, eager to make time despite his busy schedule, was ready to start the very next day. At the time, Touch Me wanted everything to be done perfectly on the first run. He went ahead and triggered the flag for the hidden boss—a gargoyle.

This irritated Ulbert, since the real thrill of the dungeon was in discovering and fighting the hidden boss, whose existence was only subtly hinted at during the normal route, and typically only revealed starting from a second playthrough. Thanks to Touch Me's premature actions, that excitement was now ruined. Touch Me, however, genuinely thought he was just being helpful.

Yamaiko then asked what would be considered an acceptable level of spoilers, acknowledging that it depends on the person. In the end, a Nephilim race player pointed out that Herohero, who had recently been swamped with work, was simply happy to be able to participate. Warrior Takemikazuchi didn’t blame Touch Me either, recognizing that his intentions were good.

Punitto Moe proposed that perhaps it was time to consider special training sessions for beginners in YGGDRASIL. He suggested taking beginners to dungeons that naturally encourage player initiative. Momonga was fine with the suggestion, but questioned whether such a dungeon even existed.

To that, Punitto Moe took them to a mansion-like dungeon. At the entrance, a human NPC greeted them, asking if they were the ones sent by the village chief. The NPC explained that his sister had been kidnapped and requested to join them on their rescue mission. Peroroncino noted that the NPC followed them as they entered the mansion. Since the NPC didn’t lead the way, Peroroncino took point.

As Peroroncino ascended the stairs, passing a large mirror, Touch Me was about to comment on something. However, Ulbert quickly stopped him, warning not to spoil anything. Touch Me only wanted to mention that the NPC cast no reflection in the mirror—a clue that he was actually a vampire disguised as a villager. So instead of saying it outright, Touch Me pretended to admire the craftsmanship of the mirror. The subtle hint was enough for Peroroncino to catch on. Ulbert could only shake his head at Touch Me for giving away even that much.

Peroroncino treated the hint like a lead but failed to notice the missing reflection entirely. He stood next to the NPC, completely unaware. Ulbert noted this was something beginners should learn—to pay close attention to their surroundings, especially in how a dungeon is structured. Bukubukuchagama pointed out that such tricks were common in dungeons. For Touch Me, it was always best to organize how events would play out before entering a dungeon.

Another potential giveaway came as they walked down a long, dark hallway. If a beginner were to open the curtains there, sunlight would flood in, causing the vampire NPC to react in pain and reveal his true nature. Touch Me tried to nudge Peroroncino by remarking how dark the hallway was. Watching from the sidelines, Nishikienrai and Luci★Fer found Touch Me’s efforts a bit forced and theatrical. Peroroncino completely missed the hint, assuming Touch Me was referring to his avatar’s brightness settings.

Eventually, the NPC revealed his true form, boasting about killing Peroroncino and anyone else who stood in his way. Only then did Peroroncino realize the NPC was a vampire. Punitto Moe wasn’t sure whether Peroroncino had genuinely forgotten or was just playing along, but he commended him for reacting like a true beginner in that moment.

Bukubukuchagama then asked Touch Me to explain the mechanics of the vampire boss. Touch Me complied, detailing that when the boss barks, beginners should be wary—blood spears will emerge from the pools of blood on the ground. Bukubukuchagama and Momonga asked Touch Me to elaborate further on the boss’s mechanics. Ulbert protested again, accusing Touch Me of spoiling too many dungeon gimmicks. As always, Momonga figured Ulbert’s protests were rooted more in personal irritation than any real concern.

In the end, they cleared the dungeon. Warrior Takemikazuchi thoroughly enjoyed the session, saying that even though Touch Me had provided some spoilers, they were minimal and served more as helpful hints than actual giveaways. Luci★Fer noted one particularly confusing detail—the reference to the “Mogami River.”

It was explained that the line was from a haiku: "Early in summer, a heavy rain, gathering quickly, Mogami River." The verse illustrates how the early summer rains rapidly swell the Mogami River, making it flow faster. Similarly, in the dungeon, if players gather small enemies in one spot, they can be culled more efficiently. Touch Me used this as an analogy to explain mob control. While players like Warrior Takemikazuchi and Momonga didn’t fully grasp the reference, they still appreciated it as a useful tip.

Afterward, Momonga asked Peroroncino what they could do for beginners, seeking his advice. The birdman admitted he had some doubts. Despite being a melee archer, he had used a ranged attack during the session. He wondered why beginners often overlooked the advantages of long-range combat. Yamaiko suggested that it might simply come down to individual playstyle, with Ulbert adding that YGGDRASIL allowed players to freely roleplay however they liked. Even so, Peroroncino felt there was a responsibility to inform beginners about such gameplay dynamics.

Touch Me concluded that the guild of Ainz Ooal Gown was prepared to train newcomers and was open to the idea of recruiting beginners. In the end, however, not a single beginner joined the guild.
