A Trip To Break Out Of A Rut (マンネリ打開旅) is the eighty-fifth chapter of the Overlord: The Undead Oh! series.
Summary[]
In the Adipocere Chamber, Shalltear Bloodfallen is having her hair brushed by one of her Vampire Bride, ask if there will be a problem if Ainz Ooal Gown, who is the Sorcerer King of the Sorcerer Kingdom, will not create a harem. The Vampire Bride asks when Shalltear means a harem, does she mean on that includes women? The Floor Guardian confirms, stating it to be a garden of women where all young girls dream of becoming queen. The attendant though assures Shalltear that no matter how many concubines there are, Shalltear will still be a powerful wife candidate. Another Vampire Bride chimes that the Floor Guardians has a most generous heart to be the Sorcerer Queen.
The thought of the harem, though causes Shalltear to drool of having the "leftovers." Hearing that, another Vampire Brides asks Shalltear if she intends to bite on the other ladies-in-waiting in the hypothetical harem. One thinks its's a bit of a matter of self-interest. Shalltear though retorts that it's normal for the queen to flirt with the other women in the harem, to which her two Vampire Brides comments that's bit messed up and bad for public image. Though Shalltear argues that if it is in the benefit of the people, then surely no one will complain.
Afterall would any of the other concubines turn away a chance to earn the favor of the queen, and give hope to the dream of rising to success. At this point the Vampire Brides claim that Shalltear is acting like she owns the harem. The Floor Guardian, argues that a harem could exist, even if Ainz has no interest, she could maintain. In effect making the harem to please her, while she has Ainz all to herself.
A fantasy goes into Shalltear's head of being blindfolded whilst Ainz takes her as his queen and brings her to a harem that he collected, and begs her to accept it. All in all the image of a queen's generous heart, which allows flashy relationships with women as it should be. It's a dream in a double sense, and also an all-you can eat buffet to Shalltear sending her in euphoria.
The Vampire Brides feel a little left out, asking what about them. To which Shalltear dismisses them saying she can't suck any delicious blood like in the harem she envisions. Frankly Shalltear admits she feels bored doing the same things at night with the Vampire Brides, and feels in a rut. This deeply shocks the Vampire Brides.
The Vampire Knights convene to a meeting as they worry that due to this boredom they will be demoted from Shalltear's harem to a mere servants. So a solution needs to be found so that Shalltear gets out of her rut. One of the Vampire Brides admit that it has been awhile since things have been fresh. And another muses that even if one has their favorite food, if they keep having it they will eventually get bored, so the Vampire Brides need to develop new ways to entertain their mistress. Ideas are passed around, which that the attendants do things in the same place so nothing actually changes. Although outside the burial chamber, it's admitted that the Vampire Brides and Shalltear get a lot of complaints. Thankfully the noise from their "play" is ignored mostly due to it being in Shalltear's jurisdiction. Though some undead have complained, which the a Vampire Bride feels sorry for as they tend to get bullied by their mistress for bringing the noise complaints up.
A Vampire Brides suggests that maybe a trip would help. Another thinks they could redecorate the chamber. Though they can't decide. One of the Vampire Brides alerts the others that it's almost that time. They need six people for the task, and she urges them to hurry. For the rush, its reveals that an importance task has been handed to Shalltear and the six Vampire Brides are to accompany her and set off to the land of the dwarves. This excites the Vampire Brides as this trip could be leading to a hot night!
Later at the Azerlisia Mountains, on the night when Ainz used [Create Fortress] to have his expeditionary team rest, the Vampire Brides are thrilled. Because they don't need sleep and can have fun with Shalltear all night. And so five of the vampires are expectant of a hot night with their mistress that will melt the snow in the mountain range. While one is singled out, to her disappointment, to stand ready at Ainz's as his attendant. While this means the vampire will miss out on the night of sex, the others assure her that there will still be a few more nights until they reach their destination, and promises that the attendant can attend to next session tomorrow.
One of the Vampire Brides though voices maybe it would be best for more of them to join in attendant posts. Though on why, the answer turns to be Aura who is on the expedition. It turns out Aura has been concerned for Shalltear and has been spending time with her. It would look bad if she ran in the room during one of Shalltear's love session with the Vampire Brides. Especially since Aura isn't even 80 yet and still a child. None of the Vampire Brides could live with that guilt. So it is arranged that three of the Vampire Brides will be by Shalltear's side, two will be outside the room, and one will attend to Ainz. By tomorrow the roles will be switches and thus begins the Vampire Brides operation.
The three Vampire Brides enter Shalltear's room where she is having a conversation with Aura. The vampires a silently put down as Aura is present, meaning there will be no night of passion. Later one of the Vampire Brides suggests maybe they bring five of them and invite Aura to partake. But this is regarded as being shameless. On the next night Aura is there again with Shalltear, which causes the Vampire Brides present to be annoyed asking why she is there and not in her own. The dark elf unaware of the Vampire Brides frustrations merely thinks that they were just looking for her. Aura assumes that the Vampire Brides are just serving as her attendant in substitution of the usual Homunculus Maids as it would be too dangerous of them to travel to the Azerlisia Mountains. But Aura tells the Vampire Brides she can attend to herself and suggests that they rest. This leaves the Vampire Brides even more confounded.
Shalltear returns to her room, where the Vampire Brides asks where she has been and what she has been doing. The Floor Guardians reveals that she has been reviewing her notes she learned from the day's trip. Taking out a small notebook, Shalltear shows she has been jotting down notes on every action Ainz makes. She believes her moment is coming soon, and is excited to be seeing Ainz work up close, hoping by studying him she can perform better. This only makes the Vampire Brides even more despondent that their nights of fun will not be coming anytime soon as Shalltear is too distracted by her attention to Ainz. Though they keep quiet about their dissatisfaction, and try to scheme of ways to get Shalltear to lose her concentration.
One even tries to entice Shalltear by lifting up her dress and expose her legs with garters. It fails as Shalltear is too engrossed in her notebook, much to their confusion. Worse Aura gives them a suspicious look, after seeing the act. Eventually Aura asks to speak with the six Vampire Brides in private. Aura bluntly reveals that thanks to her racial ability she has been hearing all their schemes loud and clear much to the vampires shock.
The dark elf admits that Shalltear is usually focused, and so asks the vampires to cease their pranks and attempts to distract her. To be clear the Vampire Brides tell Aura all their actions are not pranks. And while it is true that they were seriously trying to be naughty, it's their job to serve their mistress this way. Even so Aura tells the vampires that this job is the first for Shalltear in a long time, and that she wants to try and do her best so as to redeem herself. She hopes that the vampires can understand and will earnestly help her succeed.
Moved by these gentle words, the Vampire Brides become repentant. Outside Shalltear's room in the magically created fortress Ainz is walking the corridors looking for the Vampire Brides who are on standby so as to release them from their duty. He spots on of the Vampire Brides, by Shalltear's room, pressing her ear against the door, eavesdropping. The Overlord asks what she is doing, frightening her. Seeing the Sorcerer King, the Vampire Bride makes a excuse of checking if Shalltear's room was sound-proof. The action is deemed thoughtful by Ainz, as he never in the past checked to see if the construction of [Creat Fortress] had that trait. So Ainz asks what's the verdict, which the vampire answers that there is no sound leakage. This turns out to be rather disappointing to the Vampire Bride as she can't hear anything, only could use her imagination to visualize what delights could be happening in the room.
Ainz oblivious to the vampire's sensual desires just thinks that Aura and Shalltear could be bickering behind close doors. Thinking the situation is like a school trip, Ainz decides to not be a bother. He tells the Vampire Bride that he is moving to the top floor as it has the best view. Since the Vampire Bride is his guard and has been checking for noise leaks he orders the Vampire Bride to spend her time freely for now.
Back in Shalltear's room, the Floor Guardian is busily studying her notes wanting to be prepared and be smarter for whatever lies ahead tomorrow. But she can't seem to calm down. Currently her mind is drifting to when the Vampire Bride had flashed her slim legs and graters, apparently it was noticed by Shalltear and is affecting her.
One of the Vampire Brides informs Shalltear that Ainz is moving his residence to the top floor for the final night. And that the Vampire Brides had been ordered to stay in Shalltear's floor. The Vampire Brides makes a lewd comment that now with Ainz all the way at the top, then no matter how much Shalltear screams in bed he won't notice. That immediately catches Shalltear's full attention, enough that she decides to stop studying for now to get some exercise and get in the mood.
But the Vampire Brides tells her that it would be better to study hard for tomorrow. This frustrates Shalltear as the servant's attitude has changed. The Vampire Bride shows disinterest whatever indecent thing Shalltear desires which only angers the Floor Guardian. Aura seeing this episode between the vampires decides to take her leave for the night. As she leaves, the dark elf overhears the Vampire Brides promising to redeem themselves Shalltear when they return to Nazarick, which Shalltear promises to not show them any mercy. The chapter ends with the expedition returning home with great success and the night being over.
