Lets Go! Overlord Exhibition! (行こう! オーバーロード展!) is the eightieth chapter of the Overlord: The Undead Oh! series.
Summary[]
Albedo brings Ainz Ooal Gown to the Canteen where several general maids are viewing what appears to be a facsimile statue of himself hoisting the flag of Ainz Ooal Gown on a cliff, against a wall background of the sky. It is explained by Albedo that it is a photo spot inspired by the final scene of the opening video of the first season of the Overlord anime.
Ainz suddenly realizes that this photo scene is related to the new Overlord movie, that premiered on September 20, 2024. Prior to that feature film the Overlord Exhibition was hosted a few days ago from September 14 2024 to September 29, 2024 in Tokyo and then from October 2, 2024 to October 14, 2024 in Osaka.
From what Entoma heard a manuscript reproduction of Overlord: The Undead Oh! will be among the manga spinoffs to be included in the exhibit. The entire exhibition is expected o host a comprehensive collection of Overlord lore from the world, and characters. Albedo is looking forward to the exhibition.
Demiurge claims responsibility for the photo scene as he got excited about the upcoming Overlord Exhibition so he created an imaginary exhibit. Afterwards he decided to put it on public display in the Canteen to allow the general maids to have fun with it. According to Demiurge generally visitor want something that is being shown for the first time or because it's rare. In other words, it means "something you can only see here" or is "limited."
That's why there are special photo spots through his exhibition, allowing one to leave behind memories and photos. Albedo though questions what is the purpose of the waiting times for photo shots, stating its difficult and should not be needed. For example the 1st season of the anime shoot, can allow 14 people to be taken in a photo when they stand next to the facsimile of Ainz. Demiurge though states that only works for groups of customers and is an impossible arrangement.
For this staff members work in the queue for group parties to coordinate taking pictures to allow customers to enjoy the exhibition. Albedo finding it curious admits that the exhibition must be a unique experience, with Entoma even wanting to have a group photo.
Albedo asks what if she wants to take pictures of her own by herself. Demiurge has taken care of that by providing a life-size facsimile of Ainz that is on display in the Canteen. The sight of the facsimile draws Albedo immediately to it. Ainz notices that Albedo attempted to create a full-heart shaped hand pose with her hand and the facsimile, though suggested that the statue's hand should be open in a half-heart to make it more complete. Though Albedo rejects any changes to the object, insisting its a wonder photo spot. Seeing how enthusiastic she is the undead drops the matter.
Demiurge iterates that the previous scenes he made are not from the original work of Overlord. What is needed is a photo spot that meets the expectations of the fans who love the novel. Ainz in regards to this wonders what kind of scene Demiurge replicated, and thinks it probably of a famous battle scene in the novels. However it's not what he expected, but rather confusing, as it is a scene of a facsimile of Albedo's body, with her head embedded in the ceiling.
The male demon explains that he took inspiration from Volume 3, when Albedo jumped up with joy and got her head stuck in the ceiling of the Frozen Prison. Entoma remarks that this scene while present in the book did not make it to the anime nor the manga. And while it is something that the fans of the book would recognize, she questions if this is something that they will really look forward to. Demiurge is confident that this scene captures the reader's imagination, noting that a few fans were interest in the scene. Ainz guesses that is true, though believes some fans might think Albedo's embedded head is too shallow to what was described.
There is even a gimmick switch that Demiurge added, switches that adjusts the degree of penetration of Albedo in the ceiling which the real Albedo tries out. This is well received by AInz as he finds exhibits that one can interact with to be interesting. That being said Albedo takes the chance to ask what kind of exhibit he would like.
To which Ainz states he would like a scene from Volume 2, in the scene where Momon is pierced through the gap of his helmet by Clementine's stiletto. His idea is to allow a visitor operate aiming a stiletto to try an land the same hit as in the book. Where if the hit is a big one, characters like "Hit" and electric flashes appear.
The suggestion is mortifying to the NPCs, pleading Ainz not to think of such things done to representations of his person. Personally Albedo would prefer an interactive exhibit depicting Ainz crushing Clementine like a mackerel. Ainz isn't too such about that as the Clementine's innards would spew out. But Albedo is too engrossed with the idea of the possible mechanical Ainz tightly pressing against her.
The equipment needed would be quite a lot. So Demiurge suggests Virtual Reality. That sounds even better to the Overseer Guardian as it would be very realistic. Demiurge even says that they could not only make the user see a scene from Overlord, but make they physically be part of it, even simulating the embrace of Ainz in Volume 2 using sasumatas. Though to Ainz it looks too much like an arrest.
Another facet about exhibits are merchandise which Demiurge brings up. At these venues they should b limited goods to target visitors. On this note, Entoma recalled that when the official announcement for the Overlord Exhibition went out there was an advertisement of "newly drawn original" would be distributed as merchandise, heightening the expectations of the fans.
For this private exhibition, Albedo made some goods as merchandise with the aid of Entoma. Entoma recommends the Kyouhukou Pullback Car. Although the good makes Ainz react with revulsion. To improve the product, Demiurge suggestion Ainz discuss it with Entoma so she can use her illusion magic to design a new pullback car. After a few words, the Dogeza Sorcerer King Pullback Car from Season 4 Episode 11 is revealed. Though Demiurge and Albedo find it appalling.
In regards to the standards of merchandise, Albedo brings up stuffed animals. She has noticed a trend in people taking pictures of their favorite stuffed animals around town and dressing them up. For example, a plushie of Hamsuke is taken with a pair of glasses at Sabae, "The City of Glasses." It also seems like the number of people involved in "nuikatsu" has been increasing. To that end she thought of releasing a new stuffed toy for Overlord. Ainz thinks that the new product would be a stuffed toy of Albedo or Shalltear. But is proven wrong when Albedo unveils the Shadow Demon Plushie.
Demiurge explains that the item is in reference to the Shadow Demon from Season 4, who so happens to be at the exhibit. Recently it's in fashion to buy clothes and accessories for stuffed animals. For the Shadow Plushie, Albedo even has customizable items to dress it up. At first glance the plushie doesn't look like Overlord merchandise, which Ainz admits only the most ardent fans of the series would notice, leading to a possibility that the plushie would be ignored. An new recommendation is made by Demiurge is to use a more recognizable creature. Like the Dark Young, hence leading to the Dark Young Stuffed Toy. Entoma who examines the doll, comments that the real thing is more terrifying due to its size. But this toy is found to be cute as it can fit in the palm of her hand. To Ainz he finds the toy's multiple mouths to be disturbing. Demiurge suggests that it falls into the "gross cute" category. In fact if one were to take a photo with the toy and something cute, then the cute item will look even more so. Albedo thinks its doable, imagining the Dark Young Stuffed Toy being photographed along with a parfait and posted online. But the image seems way too sinister still to the Overlord.
Entoma has an idea that would make fans happy, which is creating "reproductions of good things that appeared in the series." This makes Demiurge raise a new product to sell in collaboration of the movie Overlord: The Holy Kingdom: CZ Drink Chocolate Flavor. The idea some delectable to Ainz, until Demiurge states in order to reproduce it exactly each bottle has 2000 calories, making highly unhealthy.
Research in the original reproduction of goods like food and beverages is then stated by Albedo to still be an option. And then she presents him a packaged food product called Princess Renner's Homemade Stew, reflecting the food she made for the children at the orphanage. Although Ainz points out even if he tries to recreate it exactly the pre-made food will not work, and even Albedo admits that it's not just "bad for your health."
A focus is returned to reproducing more physical objects like the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown by the Sorcerer King. And while creating a life-size staff difficult, maybe a smaller scale would be more easier. Like a Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown Ballpoint Pen, as they can simple remove the sharp end of the staff and it becomes a pen. A miniature version would be just right for a pen. There are problems to this, as according to Demiurge, as the pen would be slim and curvy, making it result in being unable to carry not much ink so it will be useless as a writing tool with practicality zero. Entoma has the revised product using her illusions, the 7 Color Ballpoint Pen, but it appears the design has changed. It now is a fat color ballpoint pen with the top of the staff only closely resembling the staff. The 7th Floor Guardian believes they should turn it into a 3D design, perhaps make it made of gold with gemstones which would cost 300 million yen. But it's rejected by Ainz too expensive. (On a side note it's stated that an actual item like this was sold in real-life.)
Albedo still feels that they can pursue reproducing an original item for merchandising to the fullest extent. Either ay she is glad that they are working on such an enthusiastic project with approval. One being Momon's Adamantite-Rank Adventurer Plate. It's still in production, but once they recreate the metal of adamantite it should be sellable. But Ainz finds it questionable, though in reality this good exists in real-life, but the material is actually a zinc alloy.
Another is a commercial stuff animal toy: Shalltear's Nail Clipper a life-sized stuffed doll of Brain Unglaus. While the demoness thinks it will sell, Ainz is just left questioning how this is a viable product. And then there is also the Brain Unglaus Ink Printed Nail Clippers to consider, which Demiurge finds fun. Though Ainz is clueless as to why such an item was creating, being unaware of Brain's personal history.
With all these possible products before him, Ainz still has one question on why would a fan by them. Only for Albedo to argue that when fans come to the exhibition, and see the goods section and the novelties, the array will entice them to buy, loosening their purse strings. This reasoning strikes a chord in Ainz's heart as he knows that feeling of collecting this. Even if such rare things had no practical use he would regardless buy them. Entoma adds that fans will probably buy and bring home stuff when they get lost in the emotion of being at the exhibition.
After the end of the brainstorming session, Ainz looks forward to the real Overlord Exhibition. His subordinate agree voicing that there must some good stuff that could only be seen there. Before the chapter ends, Albedo makes a point to tell the reader that the items presented were all fictional for their exhibition in Nazarick and has nothing to do with the Overlord Exhibition.
While its is a cautionary approach, Entoma worries if some readers will take the contents of the chapter too literally. Demiurge assures her all will be well as this chapter will be printed in Comp Ace on September 26th. Thus the chapter will be released when the Overlord Exhibition venue in Tokyo is still ongoing. This makes Entoma realize that this chapter isn't so much as advertising on the venue but the author and artist drawing it for fun.
