Narberal vs Ninja (ナーベラルVS忍者) is the sixty-third chapter of the Overlord: The Undead Oh! series
Summary[]
The chapter takes place sometime before Narberal Gamma made her debut as an adventurer. Ainz Ooal Gown in his office is waiting for Narberal to show him how she will go out undercover as an adventurer. The maid soon comes in decked out in a black ninja garb. Upon seeing her attire, Ainz tells her to change.
Confused as to why, Narberal recites that she chose the equipment out of respect for her creator Nishikienrai. However to Ainz the equipment makes her look too much like a ninja. Hearing those words from Ainz makes Narberal feel proud, believing she is replicating her creator's grand image of a ninja. But Ainz states that while the equipment looks good on her, it makes her stand out too much. As Ainz plans to be a dark knight, having a ninja in dark clothes really will draw too much attention. Plus real ninjas don't appear as their professions, dressing up as normal people though Narberal is confused as Nishikienrai was always dressed in a ninja suit.
To help her choose Ainz gives her instructions to wear clothes that don't make her appear fully as a ninja. He gives her a grade of 10 out of a scale of 10 to grade Narberal's appearance as a ninja. Right now he wants her to try to get a grade of 3. The Pleaides then goes back and returns in an other ninja outfit composed of a face mask and fishnet leggings and sleeves. Ainz gives it a 10 as she still needs to try something that is lee ninja but nevertheless, impressed by the outfit in that it can be worn even though Narberal is a magic caster.
Thinking it would be a waste of time for Narberal to change in her room and come back into her office, he recommends that they do the activity in her room. Though he takes it back as it would be awkward for a male to be in the same room while a woman is changing without supervision from another female. None of the other Pleiades maids who Narberal shares a room with are present to supervise. However she does know that one maid is in the other adjoining room.
At the room she knocks on the second room, where Entoma Vasilissa Zeta opens to greet Narberal. The insect maid is shocked at the appearance of Ainz who asks her to help him 'keep Narberal's level down'. Entoma is brought up to speed on what they are doing. Now in the same room, Ainz reviewing her current grade explaining why he gave her a 10, citing the face mask is a giveaway that makes her look like a ninja. In fact 95% of the time, those with face masks are ninjas, while 3% are assassins and remaining 2% are mask enthusiasts. Hearing this causes Narberal to think face masks are a high level ninja item. Secondly the clothes that she is wearing now are similar to the ones that she first changed into. Though Narberal argues that color wise they appear to be lighter than the pitch black ones. There lies the pitfall, as in the first place, 80% of those who wear mesh innerwear are ninjas. If a person can see the exposed sides of the thigh through the inner mesh, then 99.9% someone will see her as a ninja.
Not only that Narberal's top knot ponytail is like those in the ninja profession. However Ainz notes that she can't be blamed for her hairstyle as that is how her creator made her. Still around 70% of long-haired ninjas have a ponytail causing Narberl to lament she will not be able to escape her ninja-ness. Taking Ainz's assessment to heart, Narberal goes back to change. Entoma alone with Ainz asks her master if it would really be bad if Narberl looked like a ninja? Ainz states that it wouldn't be an issue if they knew for certain if the outside world had the job class of ninja. But based on their knowledge, in YGGDRASIL, the ninja class requires one to be level 60. For human beings in this world they are pretty low level so encountering those with ninja classes in general are low. To Ainz this situation with Narberal makes him feel like a parent that stopping their child from cosplaying.
The next outfit Narberal appears in is composed of a short kimono and a scarf which rated as a 6 to Ainz as she still looks too ninja-like. He then recommends that Narberal avoids wearing kimonos or any Japanese clothes that Entoma wears which includes footwear like tabi. Not only that her long red muffler is an obvious sign of a ninja, as it gives a flutter effect which ninjas are famous for. Narberal sees his point as her creator also did the same. Before heading off to change once more, Ainz notices the scroll attached behind the back of her kimono, and advises to remove it as the accessory is another tell-taler that she is a ninja. This causes Entoma to wonder if when Aura Bella Fiora wields Depiction of Nature and Society makes her qualify as a ninja.
While waiting for Narberal to come back, Ainz sighs believing by now the maid will finally get it right. Entoma tries to console him that it will be alright to lessen his anxiety, but Narberal comes back now wearing a headband with the kanji "急". Narberal reasons that since the natives of the New World do not understand the kanji it will be alright, but Ainz points out that word on her headband is a dead ringer for a ninja and also was the same one used by the Shinsengumi.
Though Entoma points out aside from that, she doesn't look like much of a ninja as Narberal is wearing a tank top and apron skirt with boots. Nonetheless Ainz grades it as 4 much to Narberal frustration. Ainz asks her to bear with what he says as the cloth at her waist is like those of a female ninja or kunoichi wear. Not only that while Narberal complied with the requirement of not wearing any Japanese-theme clothing, showing her arms and navel makes her appear still like a ninja.
A few minutes later, Narberal comes back, wearing a shirt, trousers and a mantle which satisfies Ainz. Narberal complains about no being able to wear her headband, asking if maybe she could have hidden it underh her bangs. Though doing so would be pointless as the wind would blow and reveal it. Ainz tell her not to be sadden, reminding her that the role of a ninja is to endure. From now on she will be playing the role of a ninja by acting undercover which heightens the maid's mood.
Some time after Narberal finally found appropriate attire, Entoma is facing off against the members of Blue Roses. Just as she was about to kill Gagaran, she is met by Tia. Noticing all the details of the woman from her topknot style hair, apron skirt, exposed navel, exposed arms, net-like innerwear and thighs, this causes the Pleiades to sweat and be nervous as she is facing against a 100% ninja.
