Statue of Shalltear (シャルティアしかみ像) is the sixty-second chapter of the Overlord: The Undead Oh! series
Summary[]
The chapter begins with a narration of the story of Tenkabito Tokugawa Ieyasu about a portrait that was drawn for him after the Battle of Mikatagahara. It was said the portrait was made to remind him of his despair of his loss and to avoid being complacent. The face which he is depicted is known as "Shikami" or (Grimacing Face). The image served as a reminder of his past blunder, which Ieyasu never forgot.
In the present, at the Great Tomb of Nazarick, a similar situation is being done by someone who wishes to admonish herself by memorializing her blunder through art. Shalltear Bloodfallen is seen posing before a Homunculus Maid and a Vampire Bride. The maid manages to produce a realistic portrait of the Floor Guardian. This impresses Shalltear as she always heard that some of the general maids were good at drawing.
One of Shalltear's Vampire Bride believes that the image is perfect as it portrays her charm. Instead of being praised for her compliment, the vampire earns a brutal punch from her superior. Shalltear states that the image is suppose to depict the story of her blunder, which causes the Vampire Bride to recall it, only to earn her another chop to the head. On the bright side her subordinates are happy to see their mistress in high spirits from this art session. Seeing the abuse that the Vampire Bride is getting for her mistake, the homunculus tries to apologies, but is stopped by the second Vampire Bride who states that for them receiving a punishment from Shalltear is a reward.
The Floor Guardian still painfully recalls the shame of her blunder, being mentally manipulated by an unknown foe. To remind herself of her carelessness so it may never happen again, Shalltear wants an image that exudes her blunder. Thus seeing herself smile and act cute isn't going to cut it. The maid agrees and suggests that Shalltear makes a face of frustration so she can work up a new draft.
But even when she makes that face her attendants still find her adorable. That's not the reaction she was going for as she wants to be seen as regretful and pitiful. One of the Vampire Brides suggest that they add a speech bubble to emphasize her emotion in the picture. The idea is thrown away as it makes Shalltear look comical and more akin to a child's drawing.
Once again Shalltear states she wants a vivid picture of herself, that evokes the depth of her pain. Thinking that the Floor Guardian is looking for art that shows deep emotion, the maid produces a new image, an abstract rendering of Shalltear's colored emotion. The painting is taken away Shalltear tries to find a way to imagine what she wants. Her minion suggests that she picture the battle she had with Ainz Ooal Gown, which Shalltear thinks maybe they can do a portrait of him and her decked in armor when they fought.
However the maid asks that they not do an image of that, as drawing full body armor is taxing and difficult. Scrapping the idea, Shalltear laments that she can't remember everything when she was mind controlled. Thus she can only guess what happened when they fought. Unsure of what she wants, as an experiment Shalltear asks if the maid could draw an image she would most like, a big breasted dullahan in a bunny costume.
But she loses interest and returns to deciding what could be used for her portrait. She considered her appearance as a True Vampire, but requires her to be under [Blood Frenzy] so dismisses the idea. She feels that its a pity that her two previous Vampire Brides who perished are not hear as they could have cleared up details of the incident. Hearing this the current pair of vampire Brides begs for forgiveness for their kind in not being able to protect her. To make up for the incident, they offer to include themselves in her portrait, thoug it creates a honne and tatemae situation for Shalltear to her embarrassment.
The maid has a suggestion. instead of focusing on the events during the incident and before, why not draw a scene of what came later. Shalltear states after her rebellion, she was punished, and admits the scene of being given judgment directly by Ainz could work. When asked of what her punishment was, Shalltear tells the maid that she was used as a chair, though in truth for Shalltear it was more of a reward.
In her mistress's defense as Vampire Bride iterates the events that played after Shalltear was revived. Upon hearing what she did by her fellow Floor Guardians, Shalltear went into a severe depression, staying in bed with the covers over her head. So deep was her stupor that she ignored the Vampire Brides attempts tp cheer her up, forgoing Bikini Kibasen and Milk Blindfold games. Not only that she swallowed sadness by drinking at the bar. The scene of her depression at the bar, seems like a good scene for the portrait, though the maid complains about the time to draw all the bottles at the bar to Shalltear's annoyance.
One of Vampire Bride then suggests going with the idea of painting a picture of Shalltear's resurrection, as it would fit her mistress's symbology as a reminder. This excites the maid as the scene of Shalltear awakening upon revival wouldn't be too difficult. To make match the scene, the vampires prepare the model, though the maid refuses to look at Shalltear strip naked as it goes against her sense of modesty. Remembering that Ainz covered her with a blanket when she was revived, she has her minions hang a blanket so she can strip down. Afterwards she lays on the floor with the cloth covering her body in the same exact position of when she was brought back to life.
However one of the Vampire Brides points out not everything is exact, as Shalltear is still wearing her breast pads beneath the blanket. Faced with either presenting a truthful or a exaggerated image of herself, Shalltear chooses the former. Still she does so with extreme reluctance and is left aghast as the Vampire Bride takes the pads from beneath the blanket.
Though to her chagrin the maid was distracted and missed the scene. At this point naked and ashamed, Shalltear feels that she lost her dignity as a Floor Guardian. The Vampire Bride though realizes that maybe they could do a scene of Shalltear's anguish of losing her previous chest pads. The Floor Guardian feels humiliated that the summons remembered, causing her despair, which the vampires tell their mistress not to move else it will ruin the picture. The maid finishes her portrait though is sorry that the vampires will be punished but they are fine with the treatment,
Later the artwork is hung in Shalltear's bedroom room by the vampires. There it will be seen only by Shalltear to reminder her of past sin. While the artwork is superb, alas every time she looks at it Shalltear gets angry as she thinks she looks too human. To a Vampire Bride watching she thinks the Floor Guardian is cute when she is angry.
