Nigun Grid Luin (ニグン・グリッド・ルーイン) was the captain of the Sunlight Scripture of the Slane Theocracy. He was ordered by the Cardinals to assassinate the Re-Estize Kingdom's strongest warrior, Gazef Stronoff.

Appearance

Nigun had blonde hair and black eyes. He also wore some sort of black and white robe. While so, he is engraved with a scar on his face after his bout with Blue Roses.

Personality

Nigun was a deeply religious person who believed in the power of God. He considers his own god to be divine and hate worshipers of other gods. Once he was granted a top position in the Sunlight Scripture, this made him arrogant. When Nigun was beaten, however, he turns out to be a pathetic coward who offered up his subordinates' lives to save his own first.

Background

Being the Captain of the Sunlight Scripture, Nigun had been involved in many illegal activities. In the past, he was sent to eradicate a demi-human village but was stopped by Blue Roses, whose leader managed to scar Nigun's face. He kept the scar as a reminder of his defeat.

Chronology

The Undead King Arc

Main article: The Undead King Arc

During a special meeting in the Theocracy, Nigun was issued an order by one of Six Cardinals who commanded him to eliminate the strongest warrior of the Re-Estize Kingdom, Gazef Stronoff. That unnamed Cardinal would then hand over a treasured item to Nigun that was said to contain a miracle of the Gods. Nigun was told that he can use it to help in completing his mission if an equally powerful or greater opposition prevents him from clearing it.

Afterward, Nigun Grid Luin and the Sunlight Scripture group he leads sets out on his mission to assassinate Gazef Stronoff near the designated location, Carne Village. It was revealed that he dispatched his men disguised as knights of the Baharuth Empire to ransack several villages such as the one aforementioned before. He intended to play on Gazef's honorable nature and lure him out from the capital city of Re-Estize.

Once the attack on Carne Village was over, Gazef and his subordinates charged at them head on to buy time for the villagers to escape. The Sunlight Scripture strategically used its summoned angels to kill Gazef's men and wear him down. Just as victory seemed certain, Gazef disappeared, only to be replaced by Ainz Ooal Gown and Albedo.

Nigun first sent two angels to kill Ainz. Cheering at the sight of Ainz pierced by the angels' swords, the members then became confused when they realized he had not collapsed. After the two angels were destroyed by his two bare hands, Nigun ordered the rest of the angels to swarm Ainz, but this too ended in failure as they were all caught in his Negative Burst and destroyed in one fell swoop.

Panicking, Nigun summoned the Principality Observation, but this too was immediately countered in a single blow. Dumbfounded, he accused Ainz and Albedo to be Demon Gods and proceeded to activate his final trump card - the highest level angel, Dominion Authority. Signaling the attack, the angel managed to slightly hurt Ainz with its Holy Smite but failed to follow up as it was consumed when Ainz cast the spell [Black Hole].

Completely demoralized by their powerlessness against Ainz, Sunlight Scripture's members were sooner or later captured by the Great Tomb of Nazarick. According to Albedo, they including Nigun are taken as prisoners in the Frozen Prison and were given to Neuronist Painkill to be interrogated for information.

The Dark Warrior Arc

After being taken prisoner by Ainz Ooal Gown, Nigun and the Sunlight Scripture were questioned, tortured and experimented under Demiurge's supervision. However, Nigun died in the process of being questioned. According to Ainz, Nigun was believe to have been the first person among the Sunlight Scripture members to die. They had lost Nigun, who knew the most, for the sake of asking a few simple questions. One of the things Ainz learned from Nigun at least was that the Dominion Authority which he summoned from the Theocracy's Sealing Crystal could defeat a Demon God two hundred years ago.

The Bloody Valkyrie Arc

In the New World, Ainz was concern about whether he should use resurrection magic on Nigun but decided not to do so as long as it follows the same rules as YGGDRASIL. For instance, reviving Nigun meant that the man will return back to the designated home point which is the Theocracy where he hailed from.

After freeing Shalltear Bloodfallen from the mind-control, Ainz had made it his plan to spread false information about the capability of Nigun's sealing crystal. In order to do that, he first orders Albedo to put a few scratch marks on the item he was using during their encounter back then to help him in covering up E-Rantel's Vampire incident.

The Lizard Man Heroes Arc

One of the Six Cardinals noted the whereabouts of Sunlight Scripture's Captain, Nigun are still currently unknown at the moment.

During a private discussion between Captain of the Black Scripture and the Extra Seat, the two briefly talk about the complete annihilation of the Sunlight Scripture by an unknown magic caster. As the Captain was inquired by Zesshi of how the strong this magic caster is, he said that is a good question since Nigun was once defeated by the adventurer group Blue Roses. Hearing his response, Zesshi considers Nigun's loss to that group as not something noteworthy for measuring her strength with the magic caster.

Mass for the Dead Arc

Main article: Mass for the Dead Arc

In Mass for the Dead, Nigun is still alive and commanding the Sunlight Scripture. In accordance to his orders from his superiors, Nigun was sent to E-Rantel to assist in the city reconstruction as per the Tripartite Agreement of the new alliance. To the zealot the Alliance went in conflict to everything he believed in about the Theocracy. However Nigun received an epiphany that his nation was trading one enemy for another and it was not the time for humanity to be fighting amongst themselves especially with the Cracks and Chaos Beasts. He became one of the major voices in the city urging for unity and worked with the city officials to restore E-Rantel's defenses.

Though the stationed forces of the Empire marginalized his forces, and thus he struggled to prove his men's sincerity as the Scripture were looked on in fear by the Kingdon's inhabitants. During his time at E-Rantel, he became close to Ian Als Heim his second-in-command. The leader of the Sunlight Scripture encountered his nation's most notorious criminal, Clementine now going as Saint Clementine. Despite wanting to punish her for her transgressions, Nigun was unable to as it would have caused unnecessary harm to his unit's reputation. Though after speaking with reformed criminal, he began to wonder if she truly changed for the better. Later he volunteered his forces to be sent out to Care Village when news of a Chaos Beast attacked reached the city. Nigun commanded Ian to investigate the area to locate the possibilities of a Crack. When some members of the Scripture returned with news that their were survivors, he and the head of the Adventurer's Guild requested Leinas Rockbruise aid to send reinforcements.

After Nigun and Leinas returned with a report on Carne Village, he was intrigued to learn of the protagonist and his role in defeating a Giant Chaos Beast. Nigun had Ian bring the traveler to him so as to duel with him to determine if the protagonist's power was real. The leader of the Sunlight Scripture saw the protagonist again some weeks later as part of a hearing to address some charges from Lakyus Alvein Dale Aindra on conspiracy to sabotage the venue of the second conference for the Tripartite Alliance by mutating the slimes in the sewers. In the end it turned out to be just a series of accidents which annoyed the priest that the adamantite adventurer caused so much trouble. To prevent the mutating slimes from spreading Nigun helped quarantine the sewers while the protagonist and his team took care of the infestation.

When the second summit for the Tripartite Alliance came, Nigun welcomed Cardinal Raymond Zarg Lauransan and Deuty Pontifex Maximus Enhela Read Gahi to E-Rantel. While the summit meeting took place, Nigun and Ian worked together with Leinas to establish a protective perimeter around the city. Though all seemed normal, the assembled knights and priests were attacked by a horde of Chaos Beasts. The monster prove to many to defeat forcing to fall back, while Leinas and Ian try to fight the horde's leader. Nigun and several surviving priests they try to hastily reform their perimeter just as the protagonist and his team arrive to help. Nigun seeing the hero begs him to save his subordinates and Ian from death.

Nigun would later seen amongst his men training. However he receives a shocking visit when Nimble Arc Dale Anoch arrives with reinforcements from the Empire. Upon learning that the Empire was adding more of its forces to the city, he immediately ordered Ian to report the development to the higher-ups. On the onset of another attack on E-Rantel by another horde from a cave north of E-Rantel, Nigun fought on the battlefield in defense of the city. He personally aided Lakyus in getting to the enemy leader by summoning his Dominion Authority after she promised him a match. Though the horde was defeated, an even greater horde was heading towards the city. But with the city defenders exhausted, defeating a second wave seemed impossible. Nigun and the rest of the Theocracy forces then witnessed the appearance of Jaldabaoth offering to make a deal to save the city. Though the Theocracy refused to accept any brokers from demons, the deal was accepted by Emperor Jircniv Rune Farlord El-Nix and in response the Theocracy had its forces pull out from the city.

Some time after the attack on E-Rantel, Nigun and Ian were out on a mission with the Scripture. Upon returning to the city, the priests were shocked to find the entire populace of the city to be unconscious and in sort of coma. They quickly went into the city to heal any wounded, and thankfully found there were no casualties. However the cause of the incident.

In the coming weeks an adventurer exchange tournament was organized in E-Rantel. As the protagonist and Surako were busy greeting adventurers like Blue Roses at the city square, Nigun and his second in command Ian dropped by to wish the protagonist luck on the venture. Both he and Ian would participate in the tournament after witnessing members of the Kingdom partake against the matches with the newcomers Shall and Ku. Their match ended in a draw but it was impressive enough for Nigun to invite Shall to the Theocracy. In the end she declined but was not adverse to the idea to visit their nation. The two were given chocolate confections as a reward for participating in the tournament which caused Ian to be excited. However Nigun wondered about the match with the two visitors and had the thought that maybe they were scoping out the contestants to deteermine their strengths.

Due to the decreasing frequency of the undead near the borders of the Theocracy and the Katze Plains, Nigun and his subordinate Ian were called to investigate the matter. They made their request to Pluton Ainzach and informed the protagonist that they wished to hire an adventurer team to guide them into the plains. Darkness accompanied the two priests to the plains. During the journey through the fog, learns that though the Annual Wars ended between the Kingdom and Empire, and attributed to less dead being left in the area, the plains had become a substitute gravesite for the nearby city of E-Rantel as the cemetery was at overcapacity due to the recent deaths by the demon raid. Nigun found the burial of the dead in the plains somewhat practical though a bit bereaving for families as they would no longer able to visit their deceased loved ones. Though Soi reacts that it does serve to benefit workers and adventurers who must constantly cull the plains, making him inquire if she was a worker from the Empire herself. However he explains he asked not out of disdain towards workers, though he would have done so in the past, but after learning how several workers gave their lives to protect E-Rantel his ideas on them be unscrupulous greedy villains changed to a more positive light.

While on the topic of the undead in the plains, the Soi inquired about the Captain of the Ghost Ship that was rumored to roam the area. Both Ian and Nigun knew very little only that it was a elder lich, and it there was a opportunity would like to speak with the undead to ask it about the undead phenomena in the plains. When the protagonist asked if they were sure if the undead was a lich but not a vampire, neither of the two heard of vampire living in the immediate area. The party had an encounter with the Ghost Ship much to their shock and as it passed, dropped skeletons and a Death Knight before them. Ian was targeted by the Death Knight and was saved by Soi who blocked its attack on the priest. The group working together fought the undead and managed to defeat them. Given that it was too dangerous to proceed any further as they were only a five person party, Nigun declared that the investigation to be over as he and Ian had confirmed that the undead in the plains had not vanished but were merely lurking deeper in the indiscernible fog.

Around the time when the Adventurer’s Guild was promoting and selling goods based on the protagonist’s “Dark Warrior” identity, Nigun and Ian approached the protagonist and Surako. The priests while finding the merchandising to be uplifting and brining joy to the populace were concerned that the hero worship of the “Dark Warrior” was slowly turning into a cult following. Having seen something similar happen before in a foreign land the priests warned the Territory Guardian that such faith could lead to insurrection and advised him to quickly amend it before it grew uncontrollably. Some days later, both priests visited the Adventurer's Guild themselves to purchase chocolates where they found that the guild was releasing a new doll series based on Blue Roses.

Nigun was in attendance to the city council meeting with Ian to discuss about the city's abundant harvest. A Harvest Festival was hosted by the protagonist and Ian volunteered the Sunlight Scripture to serve as security, once they got approval from the homeland. Part of the reasons for participating was that he wanted to observe the culture of the Sorcerer Kingdom through the festival.

Both he and Ian had the opportunity to meet with the dark Aura and Mare again, and engaged in a conversation as he wanted to obtain some information on the homeland of the protagonist. He and his junior expressed some concern on the integration of demi-humans and human cooperation, and while they were tolerant of it, they worried how their fellow countrymen would see it. Still they agreed to promote it for the sake of humanity in the current times. This was due to the amount of trust they possessed for the protagonist and thereby the Sorcerer Kingdom and hoped that the Theocracy could still remain friendly.

Nigun and his second-in-command were later approached by the protagonist to ask about his opinion on how to improve the current chocolate being sold at the Adventurer's Guild. The priest revealed that the Sunlight Scripture bought chocolates themselves in massive quantities and used them as carry-on-meals while on missions. Though it seemed that the Theocracy were in approval of the Sorcerer Kingdom's marketing, Nigun kept the fact that the other reason Scripture bought them was to ensure that they were safe for human consumption and not poisoned. However despite this, Nigun loved the taste of chocolate and answered that he wanted to have chocolate that did not melt so easily whilst in his pocket. After Nazarick turned out Golden Chocolate In A Bottle and released it in E-Rantel, Nigun was among the first to sample the candy which he found was to his liking. He marveled at how the Sorcerer Kingdom was able to create something new from the legacy of the Boastful Sage, before buying some of the chocolates for his subordinates.

While on night patrol, Nigun and Ian address a troop of his men before sending them off after making sure they packed rations of Sorcerer Kingdom chocolate with them, calling them nutritional. After they left, Nigun took the opportunity to enjoy the snack. He heard Ian complain about the lack of action they got while in the city, during the reconstruction phase. Nigun though felt that the peace in the city was good as he was initially worried that the greater number of people would cause tension.

Their talk was interrupted when they heard a commotion in an alley near the cemetery. He and Ian rushed to investigate where they found Clementine confronting a robed man. The two noticed that the robed man was summoning undead, and immediately pegged him as a necromancer. The priests dispatched the summons, but the robed man chose to take his own life rather than be captured. Nigun then demanded Clementine who the man was, only for the saint to tell him that she did not know and only approached him out of concern given he was pouring some strange liquid in the gutters and lashed out at her to not interfere with the ritual.

Nigun upon hearing this suspected that the man was a member of Zurrernorn and quickly informed the Kingdom's authorities and Ainzach of the Adventurer's Guild of a possible threat to the city.

Much later Nigun gathered members of Blue Roses and Darkness at the guild to tell them two teams of the danger. He sent out his men to scour the city for any more remnants of the cult, though sadly it was proving difficult for his people as most of the cultists committed suicide rather than be interrogated.

Afterwards when Blue Roses discovered the cult's plan in using a Super Giant Sanitary Slime to restart the Death Spiral ritual, Nigun altered his allies at a strategy meeting of the slime's origins and how it was made using miasma from the Cracks. In the operation against the slime using Sorcerer Kingdom brand "anti-slime agent" it was recommended by the protagonist that swimsuits should be used as the slime and agent could dissolved regular equipment. The members of Blue Roses and Soi were selected to be part of the hunting operation, alas Gagaran could not participate due to her swimsuit being destroyed.

In need of a substitute, Nigun volunteered to go with the women in a swimsuit gear, though he was politely declined as the maker of the swimsuits, Tsuibayaya was particular on who wore his creations. So instead Clementine was the one who stepped up to take Gagaran's place. Nigun then for the duration of the slime hunting operation coordinated with his men on the surface of the city whilst the adventurers worked in the sewers. Once the slime was defeated, the women addressed the populace to give a cover story on the increased military presence. Their appearance in swimsuits drew a lot of attention, no less from Nigun who decided that the equipment was worth investigating for his superiors.

He and Ian were interviewed by the protagonist and Surako for their opinions on the upcoming "chilled chocolate". For Nigun he had heard that chocolate was originally a drink in the Sorcerer Kingdom. He wasn't sure if it was suitable when chilled, but he'd definitely like to try it. Nigun hoped it would not interfere with the production of "Gokusai Chocolate" as he and his men used them as military food, causing him to be teased by Ian for being a purveyor of chocolates. When the Chilled Chocolate Confectionary was released, Nigun and Ian tried it. The captain found the confection to sweet and almost too good to finish.

Nigun and his Scripture would receive an order from Enhela Read Gahi to have all Theocracy military forces evacuate E-Rantel. Though at first confused by the order, what soon followed was a massive invasion of Chaos Beasts from within the city. Nigun was deeply conflicted over the order as he did not feel right in abandoning their fellow humans to suffer. The same sentiment was shared by his second Ian, thus in a flexible interpretation of their orders, Nigun decided that the best way to allow the rest of the Theocracy forces to evacuate the city safely was for the Sunlight Scripture to cover the rear and remain behind. Ian and the rest of the Scripture accepted these new broad directives and began to launch a defense of the city along. To supplement their attacks, Nigun used a Sealing Crystal to summon a Dominion Authority. Though initially Scripture was successfully in halting the advance of the Chaos Beasts, they soon came under attacked by an foe that was invisible to their eyes. The enemy proceeded to eliminate their summons with ease to the shock of the priests and began picking them off one by one until only he and Ian were left. Nigun managed to dodge the grip of whatever was attacking, but the second attack would be certain, but Nigun was spared after Ian sacrificed himself to protect the captain.

After the attack, Nigun and Ian were believed to have died, and because the attacker did not leave any bodies, resurrection was impossible. With Nigun and Ian gone, the survivors of the Sunlight Scripture then returned to the Theocracy.

Months passed, and Enhela still thought the loss of the captain and his deputy were a blow to the Theocracy as they were moderates like himself. Around the time Sorcerer Kingdom launched a rescue mission into the Crack to retrieve its missing agents, Enhela conducted his own solo rescue operation to search for Nigun and Ian. Enhela managed to locate their unconscious bodies. Just as he was taking them back to a Crack to leave the "other side", he encountered the adventurer team Darkness.

Enhela was driven off by the attacks of the hiding Pleiades. Outnumbered, the priest chose to flee with his two charges. Nigun and Ian made their reappearance at the Tripartite Alliance talks in E-Rantel, shocking the representatives that the two were still alive. Nigun and Ian were assigned to lead the remaining forces of the Sunlight Scripture and join the Four Kingdoms Rescue Team to assist in saving the poor souls trapped on the "other side". Once the meeting ended, Nigun thanked Enhela for saving him Ian. He was embarrassed when Enhela called him worthy of being noble, due the shameful acts he committed in the past. It was Nigun who convinced Enhela to allow him and Ian to lead the Theocracy's forces as he did not want to risk Enhela's health, having heard he was immune to the miasma though had a weak constitution for long durations.

In private Nigun and Ian had a conversation of how they were unable to read Enhela's intentions, with Nigun admitting that the Deputy Pontifex Maimus had a dangerous arrogance to him, like a greenhorn. While Ian, was concerned about this, Nigun tried to give Enhela the benefit of the doubt, having been once like the deputy and also the state of the world providing justification for such behavior.

Nigun was seen in attendance at the venue preceding a pep rally, that preluded the rescue operation to the "other side" of the Crack, Later he was seen patrolling the city with Ian, and observed by the protagonist, with Antilene Heran Fouche and his friends from afar.

While conducting the rescue mission on the "other side", Nigun was amazed at how little deaths occurred for the rescue team. He attributed this to the Gazef Stronoff, whose strength was enhanced after being exposed to the miasma and cured by the Sorcerer Kingdom. By the captain's estimation, Gazef had reached the Realm of Heroes and was possibly beyond that of an outlier. When a massive Chaos Beast horde attacked the rescue team, Nigun provided aid to the wounded, assisting them in making it to the Crack as the expedition retreated back to home soil. Upon reaching safety, Nigun was pleased to see that no one died.

Later the rescue team rushed back to E-Rantel after receiving word from the Sorcerer Kingdom that enormous amounts of miasma were spilling in from Cracks in every major city in the Tripartite Alliance. Since their unit was the only military force in the area, the joint international force hurried to the alliance's capital to save what they could.

When they were just within reach of the city, the team spotted a large force of soldiers of the Kingdom. Nigun believed that they should send a small group to meet them to avoid any misunderstandings, until Gazef saw clearly that the soldiers were feral and contaminated. When the reached the outskirts of the city, Nigun helped to set up a base camp for the team and to lead his men into the city to begin rescuing any survivors that avoided breathing in the miasma.

While in the city, his group rendezvous with the other search and rescue units at a shelter where he learned Clementine was being cared for after being injured. From the adventurers guarding the shelter, he learned that the woman had risked her life to save Nemu Emmot from two feral trolls under the influence of contamination. To her surprise and his as well, he found the deaths of the two demi-humans unfortunate as they were immigrants of the city, but circumstances forced them to put them down due to their condition. However he remarked that he was astonished that the former fugitive of his nation put down her life for a child, and commented that while he had not forgiven her for her misdeeds, he does admit that she was a changed woman who had come so far.

In a strategy meeting, Nigun confirmed to all present that most of the evacuation shelters were still in operation when the crisis began. From his assessment the best tactic was to lead any survivors out of the city and collect as many unused stockpiles for the refugees. Though food was going to be an issue not just for the rescue team and their charges but also for the contaminated. Once the afflicted reached a certain point and felt the need for food, there was a risk that they would regress to eat one another. Nigun brought up the issue of how they can contain the afflicted and solve the food shortage to avoid this.

Luckily the three members of E-Rantel Magic Research Institute: Fluder Paradyne, Sophie Noia, and Nfirea Bareare who had previously been though lost and dead appeared with a plan to decontaminate the victims and return them to normal. The captain of the Sunlight Scripture did not think that their survival was a coincidence and deduced that the trio were saved by the Sorcerer Kingdom prior to the rescue team going into the Crack.

Nigun contributed to the decontamination efforts by having him and his men investigate the remaining shelters and then surveying the surrounding outermost areas of the city for vitcims and survivors.

Abilities and Powers

As the leader of the Sunlight Scripture, he is expected to have been very powerful and was able to survive a fight against Lakyus Alvein Dale Aindra of the Blue Roses during a conflict between the two units in a demi-human village within the Re-Estize Kingdom, in which he acquired the scar on his face. According to Lakyus, the captain of that unit, was stronger than her was at that time.

He has the ability to cast magic up to the 4th Tier, a tier above the usual human limit of the New World. Due to the standards of the scripture, he was at least able to use divine spells, as well as assorted 3rd Tier spells typically employed by adventurers.

According to the author Maruyama's level ranking, Nigun is ranked above Ryraryus Spenia Ai Indarun but falls short below Tira in terms of levels. And while strong, had yet to reach the Realm of Heroes.

Passive

• Strengthen Summoned Monsters: Nigun Grid Luin had an innate talent to increase the power of his summoned beings to be slightly stronger in battle than they normally were.

Active

• Summon Angel (4th Tier): Nigun can use this spell to summon monsters of the angel class. Additionally, his talent enhances the strength of any summoned angels. Nigun can summon the mid-level angel Principality Observation, considered an "elite angel" in the Slane Theocracy.

Main Equipment

• Sealing Crystal: An item received from the Slane Theocracy used to summon the 7th Tier angel Dominion Authority. Nigun uses it in his fight against Ainz.

Relationships

Gazef Stronoff

Nigun was given a mission to assassinate Gazef Stronoff, the strongest warrior of the Kingdom and he was aware that his task wouldn't be easy if Gazef was equipped with the Kingdom's treasure. He was given a sealing crystal to eliminate him for good.

Blue Roses

Nigun held a grudge against on Blue Rose for interfering with his operation in eradicating a demi-human village. He also resented them for helping demi-humans, an act that defied his country's teaching on human supremacy. Nigun kept the scar from his encounter with Blue Rose as a reminder of his defeat.

Nigun was angered that Ainz foiled his assassination attempt on Gazef but still thought little of him; this all changed when he saw his subordinates before the mysterious magic caster's superior might.
