New Chieftain (新たなる族長) is a re-enactment game event in Mass for the Dead that was released on September 4, 2020 to September 15, 2020.

Background[]

This is a story you should have seen somewhere------the village of Carne continued to recover with the help of the goblins summoned by the village girl Enri. However, new signs of incidents appearing before Enri as she enters the large forest to collect herbs, which are a valuable source of income.[1]

Summary[]

Carne Village which was attacked by knights and saved by Ainz Ooal Gown. The situation in the village has calmed down for the time being, but scars of the attack are still visible. Enri and her sister Nemu see the chieftain and several of the villagers gathering in the square talking about the future and the possibility of future raids. Enri is shocked and worries if there are signs of another attack on their village. But the chieftain states that to be not the case, but there has been a big shadow near the village and rumors of another attack are spreading in their community. This news distresses the adults and Enri, though the latter tries to keep a positive attitude to her sister so she isn't worried. The two return to their home, Enri tries to be firm in the situation and wonders if there is anything she could do to help. She then recalls the two Horn of the Goblin General that Ainz gave her remembering if she blew it goblins would appear and obey her.

Going to an isolated part outside the village Enri decides to test the artifact out. Nineteen goblins soon appear before her. One of the goblins asks Enri if she is their summoner which the girl confirms. The goblins ask where their enemies that they need to fight are, but Enri tells him that there aren't any yet. Confused, the goblin leader asks why they were summoned then. Thinking she insulted the goblin Enri tries to apologize for her rudeness. A goblin with a scar finds the scene where his leader is making their master worried comical, but is rebuked by the leader. After Enri gives the goblins a briefing on the current situation with her village and the air of anxiety, they are interrupted when one of the villagers spots the her and the goblins. Seeing goblins, the man assumes them to be hostile and tells Enri to run. The situation deescalates once Enri explains that she summoned them through Ainz's magic.

The leader asks about the rumor that monsters were coming out of the forest close to the village. The villager still unsure to trust the demi-humans tells them that around ten monsters have emerged from the forest. The goblin leader tells them not to worry as he and his companions will not only take care of it but bring the monsters' meat for dinner and rallies the goblins in his troop.

After a while, the goblins that Enri summoned have slowly become accepted by the villagers, coming to trust them. Meanwhile Enri prepares breakfast for not just her and sister but her new charges. Though the amount is six times from what she normally prepares, she throws herself at the task. Nemu arrives to help her with breakfast but Enri politely directs her to another chore. Nemu's lack of resistance and obedience to her, makes Enri bitter as it's been like that since the loss of their parents. Her bitterness turns to rage as she slams a her knife into the wood block in anger, just when Kaijali enters the kitchen. Noticing her face he asks if anything is wrong, which Enri deflect stating that she just handled the knife wrong. Kaijali tells her to be more careful as there is not a blacksmith in the village to repair it or their equipment. Enri feeling guilty, is cheered up by Kaijali not to worry about it and helps her prepare breakfast.[2]

After making breakfast, Enri and Kaijali then head to the residence where Lizzie Bareare and Nfirea Bareare are busy with their potion research. There the two tolerate the noxious fumes of the herbs to invite the Bareare's for breakfast. They are greeted by a tired looking Nfirea. The pharmacist enthusiastically greets the two, unaware that his odor is causing them discomfort. Nfirea begins boasting of the new purple potion he and his grandmother concocted, though Enri is at a loss on the excitement. Kaijali eventually stops him there, telling him that he should wash up before breakfast. As Lizzie is too invested in her work, her grandson reports that she will not be coming to breakfast. Hearing that, Enri decides to return to the breakfast gathering and allow Kaijali to help Nferia freshened up. After she leaves, Kaijali aware of Nfirea's feelings for Enri tries to give him advice on giving more attention to Enri so as not to drive her away. Realizing the truth of his words, Nfirea agrees, and Kaijali makes a suggestion on trying to win Enri with his strength appeal. Later at breakfast outside the Emmot residence, some goblins are arguing on who should marry Enri, but some are against it as she's their boss, while Nemu laughs at their silly banter. With one goblin joking that, since he got more meat in his soup, Enri loves him more. But as they all converse, Nfirea falls asleep in his soup, so as Enri takes him to her bedroom to sleep it off. In private, Enri notes that Jugem and his goblins not only help out the village but have since become a part of it with their care and laughter. Later, Jugem rallies the Vigilance Committee for archery practice with fine results. Nemu finishes mashing Enkaishi herbs to make for medicine. Enri wishes to head to the forest, though Kaijali advises against this as it could be dangerous for her as something is going on in its depths. But as they only grow this time of year, they need to gather more from inside the forest, and they also bring in some revenue to the village. The goblin seeing the issue thinks they need to speak with the leader before any action is made.[3]

After some consultation, Enri and her friend Nfirea decide to head to the forest to collect herbs. The two are escorted by Gokou, Kaijali, and Unlai who join them not only to protect them but also to gather more information on what's going on in the forest. As they explore the forest and search for both herbs and information about the forest Nfirea tries to go with Kaijali's advice with less than subtle hints. The group find the herbs they need and Enri notes how motivated Nfirea is; when they've finished, Kaijali hears something approach. They quickly hide, and see a goblin child covered in wounds running from a Barghest. Thankfully the scent of the herbs they gathered hid their scent from the beast. Nfirea seeing the helpless goblins opts to save the child to learn why he ran all the way to where they were and determine if something dangerous is nearing the village. While the goblin guards are against it, placing Enri's safety as a priority, Enri herself wants to help as doing nothing would only be a shame. Taking her wish as an order, the goblins and Nfirea work together to defeat and kill the Barghest. Thanks to Enri's command, and Nfirea's magic they succeed in killing the monster. Nfirea quickly tends to the goblin child and gives him his newest potion he made from his research. The potion heals the goblin's wound in an instant. After he is healed, the goblin is initially annoyed that the human used him as a subject to test its effects but becomes intimidated by the older goblins when they think he lacks manners. He then thanks them for saving him, introducing himself as Agu of the Gigu Tribe.[4]

Being brought back to Carne Village, Agu is hesitant to enter as the wall surrounding the community gives off a vibe similar to the Monument of Ruin, a place which he explains to be a recent mysterious structure that appeared in the Great Forest surrounded by undead. Their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of one of Ainz's maids, Lupusregina Beta seemingly appearing out of nowhere. Nfirea hands her the Purple Potion to deliver to Ainz with a progress report; her expression changes into genuine glee of bringing her master good news. At the goblins' residence, Agu gives his statement to not just Enri and her friends but also Brita, a former adventurer. The young goblin tells the group that ever since the Beast of the South vanished the power balance in the forest has been upset. Now there seems to be a new power growing in the forest that rules undead from the Monument of Ruin called the King of Destruction. The other powers of the forest, the Giant of the East and Demon Snake of the West have joined forces and began to coerce other inhabitants of the forest to join them. Agu's tribe was one such group who tried to escape being conscript. A battle will likely reach Carne, and given the village's force are unlikely to hold against creatures that can match the Wise King of the Forest, but Lupusregina opts that they call Ainz for aid. Enri, while wanting to, decides to do all that they can do on their own instead of asking Ainz to save themselves whenever they're in trouble. Nfirea and Enri will head to E-Rantel tomorrow to ask the aid of the Adventurer's Guild and sell medicinal herbs respectively. While Brita will inform the Vigilance Committee of actions in case of emergency. Agu in awe at the human women wonders if their females are so strong. The other goblins confirm Enri is strong as is Brita, however as for Lupusregina they warn their junior to stay away from her as she is dangerous.[5]

At night Jugem and his goblins patrol the forest and run into some members of Agu's tribe who are being chased by orges. Later Enri received a visit from Jugem with news that the Goblin Troop found some members of Agu's tribe, and captured five ogres who were chasing them. So, Jugem gives Enri the option to convince the ogres to be subordinate to her. She does so, scaring the Ogres into apologizing, and having them pledge loyalty out of accepting said apologies; much to Agu's amazement. Later, she admits to Nfirea her fear of getting eaten, leading to Nfirea noting that while they may be mainly a carnivorous race, if the goblins bring them food to eat, they should be tame. Nfirea tells Enri he has to tend to Agu's injured tribe-mates, which will take all night, sadly leaving Enri to go to E-Rantel alone in the morning, as her Goblin Troop can't protect her in a human city. Enri is exasperated to suddenly be worshiped and in charge of so many people, something she normally wouldn't have done before; Elsewhere Ainz in his office senses a like-minded disturbance.[6]

Enri arrives at the fortress city where is questioned by the authorities. A magic caster inspector notes her Horn of the Goblin General, appraising it as an immeasurable magical item. Demanding to know where she got it, Enri tries to explain how Ainz gave it to her to protect her village. For someone to just give away a powerful item to a mere girl is unbelievable, and her story is immediately suspect. As the guards are about to place her in custody, Momon arrives to vouch for her claiming that he he remembers her from that time he visited her village. The word of the adamantite adventurer is enough to convince the guards and Enri is free to go. While riding in her cart Enri thinks about Ainz's motive in giving such a powerful gift. Her train of though is broken by the arrival of Nabe. Enri is briefly awed by the other woman noting that her beauty is as striking as Lupusregina. When she blurts out Lupusregina's name the village girl tries to explain Lupus is someone she knows from her village; Nabe, however, thanks her for such attention. Nabe, on behalf of Momon, asks why Enri is in E-Rantel. Listening to Enri that her tasks are to find people to migrate to Carne, sell medicinal herbs, buy supplies, and speak to the Adventurer's Guild for aid. Nabe then thanks her for her time, and goes to Momon to tell him. At the Adventurer's Guild, Enri explains the situation to the receptionist, who recommends Enri tasks an adamantite adventurer for the job; but the price range is beyond anything Enri could hope to afford. As Enri waits for the receptionist to calculate cost, she sits thinking of maybe selling her remaining Goblin Horn for the money, but that would be ungrateful to Ainz and instead she keeps it. Enri dozes off while waiting but is awaken when the attendant who anxiously asks for more details, even inviting Enri into the reception room for a drink as if the attendant is desperate at learning what she knows, or something bad may happen to her.[7]

After leaving the city, a few members of the Goblin Troop meet up with her. They travel back to the village, stopping to make a campfire to rest. Enri gifts each of them new weaponry she bought from the Adventurer's Guild to better defend themselves. While they say it's too much, Enri wanted to thank them for all they've done protecting and rebuilding the village; the Goblin Troop in respectful joy at her kindness. Returning home, the village Chief talks with Enri in private; with a decision to have her replace him as leader, but she wants time to think it over. The girl soon meets Lupusregina who playfully teases her. Enri asks her for advice on her being a village leader, thinking she's not suited to the role. Lupusregina cannot provide her an answer, so, she simply tells Enri that whoever leads, they'll make mistakes like anybody, save for 41 people who could do anything perfectly, so worrying about it is meaningless, as logically Enri is the least likely to fail. She directs Enri to Nfirea, to better talk with him about it.

Nfirea listening to his friend's insecurities on being leader, believes Enri can do it, taking her leading the Goblin Troop as a prime example. He informs her that the goblins would instinctively protect her first, leaving Nemu in Nfirea's charge, but if she leads the village, the Troop would do all they could to protect it in her honor. Seeing how much the Goblins value their summoner, Nfirea notes that it's the quality of the person, as Enri cares for them so much, the goblins treasure their master in reciprocation, as Enri named them. In contrast, no one else in the village calls them by name. Nfirea elaborates that by being Chief, the relationship between the villagers and goblins would improve. After their talk, Enri tells Nfirea that she will talk to the village chief to make her decision.

At twilight, Lupusregina is looking over the village excited by a change in their dynamic, when Yuri Alpha appears behind her to inform her that Ainz is calling for her. When asked why she's smiling, Lupusregina responds that with this new dynamic, if everything were to be burned away at the right time, and everything disappeared, she wonders just what expressions the villagers would make. She is trembling with excitement thinking about such a turnout while Yuri notes her sister is the truest example of a sadist. Lupusregina, smiling most joyfully, states that she hopes the village perishes.[8]

In Ainz's office, the Overlord reprimands Lupusregina for her lack of diligence in guarding Carne Village, citing her omission on the Giant of The East and Demon Snake of the West as examples of her lapse in judgment because she felt it wasn't worth a report. Ainz is enraged by her carelessness, expressing disappointment. Seeing that she still does not know of the village's value, as she only thinks they are Ainz's toys, but he then apologizes for not explaining clearly enough to her. Ainz then decides to elaborate why the village is important, it is due to Nfirea and his grandmother working to develop new potions. Lupusregina remembering presents the vial Nfirea asked her to deliver. This potion excites Ainz as it proves the concept that a New World native can make YGGDRASIL materials without items or skills from the game. Ainz acknowledges Nfirea's worth, and considers keeping him imprisoned in Nazarick, but his loyalty would be hard to obtain. It was then that Lupusregina humbly asked what purpose Ainz had with giving Brita a red portion that time, with Narberal. Remembering that it was just a slip, Ainz plays it off as a brilliant foresight to have her eventually meet Nfirea with the red potion, and compelling him to seek out Ainz. His ruse plays off as strategy.

Now that the battle maid is aware of Ainz's plan, she is excused. Exiting, she is heard fangirling over Ainz, before Narberal slaps her into unconsiousness to calm her down. Ainz turns the topic on the two entities in the forests and asks Aura for any knowledge of the Giant of the East and Demon Snake of the West. Alas the young dark elf doesn't know anymore than he does. Since the two monster may be around Hamsuke's level, Ainz would like to see what kinds of monsters they are first before sending kill teams to eliminate them.

Together with Aura he travels to the Giant of the East's den. The finally meet the Giant of the East "Guu," who Ainz notes is far from being a giant but it wasn't a complete lie. Ainz then points out the Demon Snake of the West "Ryraryus," who while invisible, can be seen clearly by Ainz who demands that he step into the light to talk; the shocked Naga decloaks and presents himself. Noting that he is no normal skeleton undead, Guu is enraged to be confronted so he introduces himself; Ainz gives a cordial introduction, but is met with laughter; Ryraryus explains that Guu's tribe thinks that long names make one a coward, but the Naga doesn't believe that as he too has a long name, introducing himself as Ryraryus Spenia Ai Indarun. To stop the laughing, Ainz explains that he built the Monument of Ruin, and Guu directly challenges him to a duel; Ainz merely negotiates that if they submit to him, they will live. Guu further insults him, despite Ryraryus' pleas, and Ainz offers a 1-on-1 fight to determine who's stronger.

In the end Ainz uses [Despair Aura V], killing Guu and all of his trolls behind him. Ryraryus, in horror, pledges his life in servitude to Ainz; which the Overlord accepts. Asking if Ryraryus has minions, specifically trolls, the naga acknowledges that he has only one troll. This pleases Ainz, and he orders the naga to be freed and to bring his minions to the Monument of Ruin; Aura is unsure, but Ainz affirms that he won't betray him.[9]

The village of Carne is alerted that it will be attacked soon and the villagers begin establishing basic defenses and distributing weapons. Jugem, Enri, and Nfirea quickly plan their strategy and suspect the Giant of the East and the Snake of the West, their anonymous enemies are attacking without preamble or warning. The gate is created which is a kill zone as the defenders purposely lure the enemy ogres in a boxed area whilst the villagers eliminate them one by one. Amid the chaotic horde a 'strangely moving troll' causes the goblins and villagers to become apprehensive. Some consider retreating, but Jugem orders them to stand and die before retreating. Enri and Nfirea having withdrawn from the battle scene to confirm the security of their neighbors, encounter a troll sneaking over an undefended portion of the village wall. To prevent it from attacking the non-combatants and defenders, the two are forced to deal with the situation.[10]

Jugem fights the giant troll head on, but despite its wound it continues to attack. Back with Enri and Nfirea, the two resort to deception to keep the troll busy using blankets covered in ogre musk to confuse it, but eventually it wises up and closes in on them. Even with Nfirea's magic, it overwhelms him, but the boy manages to allow Enri to escape to get help. Just as it is poised to kill him reinforcements are sprinting to his aid, but the troll's hands are only feet away from crushing Nfirea. The inevitable blow never lands as Lupusregina interposes herself between the troll and him, appearing out of nowhere. The troll simply burns, having died so quickly it never made a sound. With the threats to the village gone, the goblins allow the couple time to themselves as they clean up the battle. After leaving behind the carnage the two sit down to look at the night sky, leaning shoulder to shoulder watching the stars.[11]
