Mercenary Knights (傭兵騎士団) is a new mysterious sisterhood in part 2 of Mass for the Dead's main story.[1][2]
Background[]
The Mercenary Knights are a band of six heteromorphic women—existences born from the Sea of Possibilities with distant yet undeniable ties to YGGDRASIL. Their creator, deeply familiar with the game and an ardent admirer of the legendary heteromorphic guild Ainz Ooal Gown, recorded his fascination in a book. That admiration left a profound imprint on the women themselves: they inherited both the book and the reverence it carried, preserving the deeds of Ainz Ooal Gown as part of their identity.
Although each woman was fashioned as a knight, they manifested separately, without any initial connection to one another. Aggresiel, who would eventually become their leader, was the first to encounter Billiophia. Imperfect and incomplete as they were, the two pooled the fragmented memories they held, along with the writings left behind by their creator, to craft a shared understanding of who they were—sisters.
United by these revelations, the pair set out on a journey to find the remaining four, guided only by the descriptions preserved in their creator’s books. Together, they sought to reunite with their scattered sisters and reclaim the legacy they were meant to share. [3]
A some point the group having fully reunited, began using the Chaos Zone which they referred to as the Corridor to wander and travel to other worlds in the Sea of Possibilities. They visited many worlds, where they took on different roles and identities. On some they took the role in which they were named and other times as workers. The motto of the group is turning the unknown into the known. During their travels they were aware of their origins as originally unrealized beings brought to life through the indirect power of the World Enemy, the Devourer of the Nine Worlds. The Mercenary Knight referred to the World Enemy as "Mother" as a name of sarcasm, as the knights saw the entity as a threat to the worlds they travel and thus sought a means to destroy it. In the current world which they dwell in they encountered a world that was on the brink of war. The sisters also ran afoul with an alternate version of the Slane Theocracy, with their leader being labeled as a devil. They soon discovered the possibility of Cracks forming to lead to catastrophe was imminent and thus sought a way to prevent this.
At some point the Mercenary Knights became aware of the existence of Enhela Read Gahi. They understood that the priest was of the same origin as them, being born from the Sea of Possibilities. However they were wary of him as he was associated with the Slane Theocracy, a organization that was against heteromorphics and thus not compatible with the ideals of the knights. Though they did maintain observation of Enhela from a distance.

The group were alerted to the death of Enhela, after Aggresiel sensed his demise using her power. After briefly soaking in the joy of their foe's death, Aggresiel put out the proposal to finally go and contact the great guild. Upon hearing this some of the members were excited that they were going to finally make friends and gain more data.
Since no one seem to argue with the idea, the decision was unanimously agreed to. Aggresiel and her younger sister Billiophia then left to make preparations. Despite the optimism of establishing communication with the other party, Di was worried that it might not work out, ending in an argument with one of her sisters, forcing one of the others to intervene.[4]
A year since the defeat of Enhela, Aggresiel and Billiophia made their way to Arwintar. Though having arrived they found they lacked appropriate funds for food, and attempted to find work. Sadly they could not find any work as the occupation of Mercenary Knights did not exist in the Baharuth Empire. Close to going hungry they duo managed to meet with Osk, a merchant and promoter of the Grand Arena. The women claimed to be bounty hunters and pleaded for Osk to hire them, though he was doubtful of their skills and initially wanted to turn them away. But he was convinced to hire them as fighters in the arena by Headhunter Rabbit who instinctively sensed their dangerous power.
The match was on the last day of Go Gin comeback matches. By chance that day coincided with a surprise visit from representatives of the Quadripartite Alliance. After the Martial Lord defeated a Skeletal Dragon in his match, Aggresiel and Billiophia were arranged to have a friendly match against Freivalds and Fan Long of Silver Thread Bird. The match ended in the victory of the two members of Mercenary Knights. While the duo were the winners, Aggresiel struck up a friendly conversation with the adventurers, acknowledging their strength and achievements.
After the match, Aggresiel and Billiophia took their pay from Osk and left the arena to whereabouts unknown to the merchant. Though it was later reported by Headhunter Rabbit and Doppel-Slimeko that the pair went to the Singing Apple Pavilion and ate with some workers.
Next after their meal, the siblings then head to the lodgings of the delegation belonging to the Sorcerer Kingdom. Their approach was noted by the Shadow Demons who were in hiding, but to the shock of the demons the women could perfectly perceive them and asked them to be allowed an audience with Prime Minister Albedo. The summons apprehensive by these unknown people, alerted their mistress as well as the protagonist.
Despite the risk, Albedo permitted the pair to enter her room after they were disarmed of any weapons. Aggresiel and Billiophia then introduced themselves to Albedo. Aggresiel did most of the talking, but was focused on praising the Overseer Guardian as if she was part of her favorite celebrity group and was acting as if she was familiar with her.
Her focus was distracted by brought back on track by Billiophia. Aggresiel explained that her group, the Mercenary Knights had been watching the activities of the Sorcerer Kingdom. At first this was confused as spying, though Aggresiel made it clear that she and her party had nothing but respect towards Albedo and her faction.
Even so Albedo was not convinced as she had encountered others who claimed to be workers in the past and revealed themselves to be not entirely what they seem. The two women then divulged that they were not native to the current world but in fact from another world originating from the Sea of Possibilities. To them the Chaos Zone was a means of travel for the group's dimensional adventure. However recently their attention to the current world was brought, after when suddenly, a large number of humans were sent there. They were just investigating the circumstances and wondering if they would suffer any consequences. Which led to them finding out that it was the work of a priest named Enhela who was using a dark power.
Aggresiel made it clear that though Enhela shared the same origins as her and her sisters, they did not perceive he as an ally but a threat. His elimination was a relief to the Mercenary Knights. As for how they were aware of the Sorcerer Kingdom, it was when the nation began their rescue efforts around the time when that Enhela fellow disappeared. Aggresiel confessed to having spied on the protagonist in the Chaos Zone and saw that they were of the same origins. Furthermore she believed the group to be associated with the legendary guild she and her sisters all heard about.
Albedo still had doubts of the strangers and queried them with question such as where they originated from. The women then explained that the Mercenary Knights were currently on a world where they had adventurer all over. However it was now facing the same threat as the New World, being invaded by Chaos Beasts. And while the number of incursions was minuscule, the world was still dangerously edging towards destruction.
To prevent that the Mercenary Knight deemed it to be appropriate to reach out to the Sorcerer Kingdom. Having noticed that the Sorcerer Kingdom has been guiding the humans of the New World in a positive direction they wanted them to lend their strength. In exchange they offered their world's knowledge and the technology the Sorcerer Kingdom lacked. And while Aggresiel understood that Albedo still did not trust her right away, she wanted the Mercenary Knights to have a friendly relationship with the Sorcerer Kingdom.
Suspicion was still directed towards the strangers, especially when Aggresiel kept mentioning the guild that their nation was supposedly associated with. They then asked the two to describe this guild. On that Billiophia recited, from her book, the facts about this guild that their faction admired. These facts included the guild defeating a punitive force of 1,500 people, fought against righteous hunters of other races, and had a World Champion and World Disaster, the name of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown and even the name of the guildmaster Momonga.
These precise facts shocked the members of the Sorcerer Kingdom as they were all undoubtfully true. As Albedo wondered on how to handle this situation, Aggresiel and Billiophia made it clear to the Prime Minister that they knew that the Sorcerer Kingdom was actually the legacy of Ainz Ooal Gown and did not seek to expose them. They had no wish to be enemies and only had heartfelt respect to them, understanding that if they became enemies, the Sorcerer Kingdom would wipe them to dust.
All that they asked was to develop a cooperative relationship and receive the Sorcerer Kingdom's patronage. That being said the dialogue convinced Albedo and the rest that they were telling the truth.[5]
The members of the Mercenary Knights apparently left afterwards, and Albedo and the protagonist passed their message to Momonga and the rest of Nazarick. This new unknown was troubling to Momonga as even though they were approached in a friendly manner, the Sorcerer King did not completely trust them, leading him to pursue using a body double in future meetings with them.[6]
While preparing for a New Year's celebration in Nazarick, centered around Shiro, the protagonist recalled how the sisters from the Mercenary Knights had a presence that was similar but not quite like Shiro's which was ironic given they were existences hailing from the Sea of Possibilities.[7]
When Emperor indirectly contacted the protagonist through Osk about using Sorcerer Kingdom chocolate as a prize in an event called the Chocolate Cup, the idea was approved by Momonga. He hoped by doing this favor, especially to Osk, it might create a relationship to the Grand Arena and make it easier to find out what the sisters of the Mercenary Knights were up to in the future.[8]
A second meeting with the members of the Mercenary Knights was due. In a meeting in Nazarick, it was discussed that the the knights represented by Aggresiel and Billiophia conveyed a desire to form a cooperative relationship with the Sorcerer Kingdom. According them the knights came from another world where the danger of the Cracks and Chaos Beasts were minimal, and the human nations were more concentrated in fighting themselves.
After seeing the Sorcerer Kingdom unify the various nations into an Alliance, the knights wanted their help in safeguarding the world they came from. Additionally they warned that something ominous was occurring in the Cracks or Womb Corridors. Given that the sisters suspected that the Sorcerer Kingdom were part of the legacy of the guild of Ainz Ooal Gown, they showed proof that they shared a common origin, in the form of a YGGDRASIL gold coin,
The duo from the Mercenary Knights met the second contact team composed of the protagonist, Doppel-Slimeko and Shall in Arwintar. In the meeting they exchanged information with each other. The sisters were surprised when Shalltear revealed herself as a Floor Guardian of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, which excited them as it confirmed that Nazarick still existed. Billiophia revealed entries from her book that detailed the exploits of the Supreme Beings like Touch Me, Ulbert Alain Odle and Momonga. Though when asked by Shalltear on Peroroncino, the girl only anecdotal stories of a sniper in Helheim.
The two were asked about World Items, but claimed to have very little information, though were willing to talk negotiations in the future. The two groups began to become familiar with each other, enjoying teatime over Chocolate Drinks. Aggresiel and Billiophia were introduced to Lupusregina and CZ, which the protagonist reveled to be undercover agents for the Sorcerer Kingdom and their future main contacts. Aggresiel recognized CZ as being one the abductees taken into the Womb Corridor, and was glad she was safely rescued, revealing that she herself wanted to join the rescue missions that the Alliance was conducting, however Billiophia had stopped her as the knights did not want to draw attention from Enhela. The sisters also revealed some details about travel through the Womb Corridors, in that they acted as roads to other worlds.
Another more serious topic that was broached on was the Mimic, which had recently been discovered. The sisters were asked about the phenomena in the Crack that produced these replicas. From the knights observations of the Womb Corridor, they believed that it was the a result from the "Calamity of Cracks." Those who were abducted were brought inside the Womb Corridor, and due to the constant travel through the anomalies caused a defragmentation of information, producing the replicas.
The two groups decided to work together to resolve this threat, and they deduced that E-Rantel would most likely be targeted by the monsters. Before the knights and the contact team headed out to the fortress city, Headhunter Rabbit approached the knights requesting that they come to the arena for a match against a Skeletal Dragon, as the fighters who were suppose to fight it fled. However the knights had a current obligation, so Regi and Shizuni of New Six Arms volunteered to take the job.
The parties then flew to E-Rantel via perytons, taking a detour to the Great Forest of Tob. There Aggresiel and Billiophia took in the sight of nature and also explored the ruins of Carne Village. The found the ruins to be a pity but understandable as it was close to a Crack. The duo wanted to head to E-Rantel quickly so they could see the Mimics for themselves.[9] The sisters were given a tour of E-Rantel, being introduced as rivals of Shall's that the promising adventurer had met on her travels.
While at the city, the sisters were greatly impressed by what they seem, especially the human and demi-human interaction, which was unlike anything they seen on their travels. The sisters also revealed that they had at least encountered alternate versions of Saint Clementine and Nemu Emmot, when they encountered the current world's versions. And also Nigun Grid Luin, who they knew from their interaction with his alternate in their world.
They played a pivotal role in unraveling the mystery of Mimics, which were found to be the indirect result of desires of trapped humans in the Crack interacting with a wish-granting mineral known as Remnant. With the revelation of this mineral revealed to Nazarick, Momonga considered their request for cooperation, especially for mining rights. The representatives expressed a wish to acquire the strength of the Sorcerer Kingdom, to replicate the positive influence it has done for their world to theirs. To that end they proposed to research Remnant together and work towards the goal of defeating the Devourer of the Nine Worlds.[10]
Due to the potential uses of Remnant and the desire to acquire more for future use, the Sorcerer Kingdom considered opening a friendly relationship with the Mercenary Knights. It was determined that the knights could serve as guide to the world they originate. In the step in the right direction Momonga decided that the Great Tomb of Nazarick will welcome the diplomatic envoys Aggresiel and Billiophia.
After preparations were made in the dungeon, the sisters were sent for, by CZ and Lupusregina, who blindfolded them and took them to Nazarick. The sisters were guided into Nazarick by the Pleiades and were shown into the floors of the dungeon, allowing the knights to see the various environments. They were taken aback by the splendor of Nazarick, as while they heard of its descriptions, the writings of the place didn't to it justice. They were taken to the Amphitheater where they met the various Floor Guardians. And finally encountered who they desired to see: "Momonga".
During the conversation with the Sorcerer King, a mock battle was hosted to determine the knights strength, and so they were pitted against Cocytus and Shalltear. The sisters were defeated but were proud to have crossed blows with servants of the guild of Ainz Ooal Gown. To celebrate their new friendship, a feast was held for the visitors. To solidify their new relationship with Nazarick, the knights gifted Momonga a gauntlet as a tool to communicate with the knight even worlds away. The sisters then decided to return to their world as to reunite with their sisters.
Momonga then offered then sisters a ride aboard a Ghost Ship captained by Iguva. He and Albedo joined them on their journey to the east of the Katze Plains to take them to their destination where they would return to their world. During the trip Momonga got to know the knights, who as it turned out fully viewed the Sorcerer Kingdom as worthy and in the right. Despite being a knightly order, the sisters made it clear they would support Nazarick, seeing it efforts beneficial to the world at large. Whether Momonga was good or evil did not matter to them as it was the Sorcerer King's strength was what matter. And by allying with him the knights hoped to have a "place for [their] sisters to live in peace."
As both parties now were beginning to trust, Momonga made the offer to take the knights as a vassal state, given that they were heteromorphs and he could grant his protection to them. He left them them to think on it. For a first step to their new relationship, Momonga requested that they be friends with the protagonist, to which the sister agreed to look after the homunculus before returning to their world.[3]
By the time of the festival at E-Rantel celebrating the Quadripartite Alliance, the Sorcerer Kingdom still maintained its promise to cooperate with the outsiders.[11] However the Sorcerer Kingdom aired on the side of caution, as while the visitors established friendly relations, they and the Mimics represented unknown variables. Hence drills were conducted to check the security of Nazarick, such as tests with the Defense Tree that managed the defense network of treants around the dungeon.
Furthermore their existence opened possibility of dealing with a hostile "world." Which led for a plan to use normally defensive tree monster, in an offensive manner, by weaponizing its seeds that parasitize other organisms to serve as a countermeasure in enemy territory.[12]
While preparing his clothes for his public debut, Momonga reflected on the protagonist and Solution busy in E-Rantel and on business trips. He wanted to reward them for their hard work, especially when they were dealing with the visitors from another world, the Mercenary Knights.
And later when an invitation was sent out from Nazarick, inviting Doppel-Slimeko and the protagonist, to hear stories of the Supreme Beings and Rainbow Drops, the protagonist believed that the stories might be a useful bargaining chip when interacting with the visitors.[13]
After Albedo passes a proposal from Renner about creating a resting facility for the lizardman, Momonga considers something like resort could later be used for diplomacy—perhaps even hosting the Mercenary Knights who are currently friendly toward the Sorcerer Kingdom. With such a facility Momonga believe it could strengthen that goodwill and so gave his permission.[14]
The Sorcerer Kingdom was said to making plans to offer gifts to the people from the other world, to establish good relations. Among the trade items being considered was the inventions made by the members of Nazarick, before settling on swimsuits.[15]
Strength[]
The true strength of the group is unknown. What is known is that they at least number six female members. And from the testimonies, the Mercenary Knight appear to have the ability to navigate the Cracks to travel to other worlds, using the Chaos Zone, a world that is hazardous to all lifeforms save for those native to the Sea of Possibilities. According to a representative of the Mercenary Knights, the "inside of the Crack" is referred to as their garden. And while they have the ability to freely scouted the world via the Cracks or Womb Corridors, they mostly avoid traveling in unfamiliar places.

Trivia[]
- While it is unknown what kind of group this represents, a clue hints on possible player origins from the wheel-chair bound member, as she stated that "turning the unknown into the known is exciting." A same statement said by Ainz Ooal Gown when he took over and transformed the Adventurer's Guild.
- Their races are also unknown for the moment but based on the silhouettes they are visually humanoids, with the wheel-chair bound woman appearing to have pointed ears like an elf.
- In the game a Chaos Relic with Aggresiel and her sisters appear and is title as "Encounter: Pilgrims of the Crack."[16]
- Despite being called the Mercenary Knights, only one of the group, Aggresiel, appears to be dressed as a knight.
- According to Aggresiel the organization of Mercenary Knights appears to be extant in the world which the group is based in. Though in the New World no such organization exists.
