Mercenary Knights (傭兵騎士団) is a new mysterious sisterhood in part 2 of Mass for the Dead's main story.[1][2]
Background[]
The Mercenary Knights are a group of six heteromorphic women. They are existences from the Sea of Possibilities and have ties to YGGDRASIL, as their supposed creator was familiar with the game. In addition their creator was an avid admirer of the famous heteromorphic guild, Ainz Ooal Gown which he recorded in a book. Their creator's admiration of the guild greatly impacted the women who they in turn also revered the guild, retaining the book and keeping the deeds of Ainz Ooal Gown alive in their thoughts.
A some point the group began using the Chaos Zone which they referred to as the Corridor to wander and travel to other worlds in the Sea of Possibilities. They visited many worlds, where they took on different roles and identities. On some they took the role in which they were named and other times as workers. The motto of the group is turning the unknown into the known.
At some point the Mercenary Knights became aware of the existence of Enhela Read Gahi. They understood that the priest was of the same origin as them, being born from the Sea of Possibilities. However they were wary of him as he was associated with the Slane Theocracy, a organization that was against heteromorphics and thus not compatible with them. Though they did maintain and observation of Enhela from a distance.
Chronology[]
Mass for the Dead Arc[]

The group were alerted to the death of Enhela, after Aggresiel sensed his demise using her power. After briefly soaking in the joy of their foe's death, Aggresiel put out the proposal to finally go and contact the great guild. Upon hearing this some of the members were excited that they were going to finally make friends and gain more data.
Since no one seem to argue with the idea, the decision was unanimously agreed to. Aggresiel and her younger sister Billiophia then left to make preparations. Despite the optimism of establishing communication with the other party, Di was worried that it might not work out, ending in an argument with one of her sisters, forcing one of the others to intervene.[3]
A year since the defeat of Enhela, Aggresiel and Billiophia made their way to Arwintar. Though having arrived they found they lacked appropriate funds for food, and attempted to find work. Sadly they could not find any work as the occupation of Mercenary Knights did not exist in the Baharuth Empire. Close to going hungry they duo managed to meet with Osk, a merchant and promoter of the Grand Arena. The women claimed to be bounty hunters and pleaded for Osk to hire them, though he was doubtful of their skills and initially wanted to turn them away. But he was convinced to hire them as fighters in the arena by Headhunter Rabbit who instinctively sensed their dangerous power.
The match was on the last day of Go Gin comeback matches. By chance that day coincided with a surprise visit from representatives of the Quadripartite Alliance. After the Martial Lord defeated a Skeletal Dragon in his match, Aggresiel and Billiophia were arranged to have a friendly match against Freivalds and Fan Long of Silver Thread Bird. The match ended in the victory of the two members of Mercenary Knights. While the duo were the winners, Aggresiel struck up a friendly conversation with the adventurers, acknowledging their strength and achievements.
After the match, Aggresiel and Billiophia took their pay from Osk and left the arena to whereabouts unknown to the merchant. Though it was later reported by Headhunter Rabbit and Doppel-Slimeko that the pair went to the Singing Apple Pavilion and ate with some workers.
Next after their meal, the siblings then head to the lodgings of the delegation belonging to the Sorcerer Kingdom. Their approach was noted by the Shadow Demons who were in hiding, but to the shock of the demons the women could perfectly perceive them and asked them to be allowed an audience with Prime Minister Albedo. The summons apprehensive by these unknown people, alerted their mistress as well as the protagonist.
Despite the risk, Albedo permitted the pair to enter her room after they were disarmed of any weapons. Aggresiel and Billiophia then introduced themselves to Albedo. Aggresiel did most of the talking, but was focused on praising the Overseer Guardian as if she was part of her favorite celebrity group and was acting as if she was familiar with her.
Her focus was distracted by brought back on track by Billiophia. Aggresiel explained that her group, the Mercenary Knights had been watching the activities of the Sorcerer Kingdom. At first this was confused as spying, though Aggresiel made it clear that she and her party had nothing but respect towards Albedo and her faction.
Even so Albedo was not convinced as she had encountered others who claimed to be workers in the past and revealed themselves to be not entirely what they seem. The two women then divulged that they were not native to the current world but in fact from another world originating from the Sea of Possibilities. To them the Chaos Zone was a means of travel for the group's dimensional adventure. However recently their attention to the current world was brought, after when suddenly, a large number of humans were sent there. They were just investigating the circumstances and wondering if they would suffer any consequences. Which led to them finding out that it was the work of a priest named Enhela who was using a dark power.
Aggresiel made it clear that though Enhela shared the same origins as her and her sisters, they did not perceive he as an ally but a threat. His elimination was a relief to the Mercenary Knights. As for how they were aware of the Sorcerer Kingdom, it was when the nation began their rescue efforts around the time when that Enhela fellow disappeared. Aggresiel confessed to having spied on the protagonist in the Chaos Zone and saw that they were of the same origins. Furthermore she believed the group to be associated with the legendary guild she and her sisters all heard about.
Albedo still had doubts of the strangers and queried them with question such as where they originated from. The women then explained that the Mercenary Knights were currently on a world where they had adventurer all over. However it was now facing the same threat as the New World, being invaded by Chaos Beasts. And while the number of incursions was minuscule, the world was still dangerously edging towards destruction.
To prevent that the Mercenary Knight deemed it to be appropriate to reach out to the Sorcerer Kingdom. Having noticed that the Sorcerer Kingdom has been guiding the humans of the New World in a positive direction they wanted them to lend their strength. In exchange they offered their world's knowledge and the technology the Sorcerer Kingdom lacked. And while Aggresiel understood that Albedo still did not trust her right away, she wanted the Mercenary Knights to have a friendly relationship with the Sorcerer Kingdom.
Suspicion was still directed towards the strangers, especially when Aggresiel kept mentioning the guild that their nation was supposedly associated with. They then asked the two to describe this guild. On that Billiophia recited, from her book, the facts about this guild that their faction admired. These facts included the guild defeating a punitive force of 1,500 people, fought against righteous hunters of other races, and had a World Champion and World Disaster, the name of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown and even the name of the guildmaster Momonga.
These precise facts shocked the members of the Sorcerer Kingdom as they were all undoubtfully true. As Albedo wondered on how to handle this situation, Aggresiel and Billiophia made it clear to the Prime Minister that they knew that the Sorcerer Kingdom was actually the legacy of Ainz Ooal Gown and did not seek to expose them. They had no wish to be enemies and only had heartfelt respect to them, understanding that if they became enemies, the Sorcerer Kingdom would wipe them to dust.
All that they asked was to develop a cooperative relationship and receive the Sorcerer Kingdom's patronage. That being said the dialogue convinced Albedo and the rest that they were telling the truth.[4]
The members of the Mercenary Knights apparently left afterwards, and Albedo and the protagonist passed their message to Momonga and the rest of Nazarick. This new unknown was troubling to Momonga as even though they were approached in a friendly manner, the Sorcerer King did not completely trust them, leading him to pursue using a body double in future meetings with them.[5]
Strength[]
The true strength of the group is unknown. What is known is that they at least number six female members. And from the testimonies, the Mercenary Knight appear to have the ability to navigate the Cracks to travel to other worlds, using the Chaos Zone, a world that is hazardous to all lifeforms save for those native to the Sea of Possibilities. According to a representative of the Mercenary Knights, the "inside of the Crack" is referred to as their garden.
From two of their members the group is strong, as they have been shown to be able in defeating adamantite rank adventurers.
