"Same...same sixth Floor Guardian Mare Bello Fiore, at your command."
— Mare's Introduction

Mare Bello Fiore (マーレ・ベロ・フィオーレ) is a dark elf and one of the twin Floor Guardians on the 6th Floor of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Mare is the younger twin brother of Aura Bella Fiora. Alongside his sister, he was created by Bukubukuchagama.

Appearance

Mare is a child with dark skin and pointed ears, a signature trait of the dark elves. He has golden hair and heterochromia, his right eye is blue and his left eye is green.

He wears a blue dragon scale leather full-body suit, covered by a white and gold vest embroidered with the sigil of Ainz Ooal Gown and a forest green-leaf cloak. Below, he has a matching short white skirt exposing his thighs, and on his neck is an acorn necklace emitting silver light. His slender hands are donned with shiny white silk gloves and he wields a twisted black wooden staff.

People outside of Nazarick always mistake him for a girl, due to how he looks appearance-wise and the clothing he mainly wears.

Personality

Mare has a shy and cowardly personality, the kind which is a polar opposite to his sister, Aura. He often stutters when speaking and maintaining a subservient demeanor during conversations. This, however, is only an outward guise and does not affect his loyalty to Ainz or his ability to carry out his duties, no matter how cold-blooded they may be. Beneath his shy and retiring facade, Mare is capable of showing hostility and determination to those who threaten the territory of the 41 Supreme Beings. Mare likes to sleep all day and is fond of reading books from Nazarick's library, Ashurbanipal, instead of talking with others. He is comprehensive of how his sister feels without her needing to say a word, knowing whether she is having a bad mood or not. He is also appreciative of the time and effort put forth by Ainz's New World followers, showering those like the lizardmen compliments for showing their loyalty to his master with offerings. He also dislikes dragging out conversations with other Nazarick denizens like Pulcinella for too long, seeing that everything the latter tells him is uninteresting. If an opportunity presents itself in the conversation, he would tried his best to hurriedly change the topic of their discussion before it goes on for any longer than it already did.

Unlike his sister, who has an interest in collecting beast species, Mare takes a keen interest in collecting plant species. Mare is also observant of his master's movements to the point that he can't help but openly lavish praises for Ainz during their times spent together between them. When Ainz provided his reason for staying with the NPCs, he was shown to appear very emotional and tearful around his master. It was to the point he indirectly got servants of Nazaricks like one of the Homunculus Maids to speak on his behalf while he is crying uncontrollably until Ainz calmed him down. This goes to show that Mare's feelings are relatable and understandable by servants who wish to convey them in his stead. He was reluctant about the idea of executing actions independently on his own without first seeking permission from Ainz ahead of time. He loathes the possibility of being scolded by Ainz by acting against his master's orders unless it is his creator making the decision for him. He was adamant and determined to not let anybody undermine the uniqueness his creator granted to him, going as far as to voice that vow loudly. On the other hand, he would kindly admonish his sister's words if it is out of line especially towards Shalltear.

When Mare becomes troubled of what to do on duty while alone, he can't help but express sorrow over it. Wherever there are NPCs like Aura around with him, he would rather consult them to help with completing the task. If he failed to achieve good results from the orders Ainz issued him to do, he would easily get depressed to the point where not even his fellow NPCs could be able to cheer him up except for his master or creator. Bad results of fulfilling his master's orders would make him question his own worth and existence as a servant to Ainz. He dislikes the mere thought of disappointing Ainz who counted on him to do his job correctly without failure. Mare thought about it so much that he tearfully imagined what would happen to him if everything went wrong. Nevertheless, he was very much appreciative of Ainz's willingness to encouragingly guide him on his task every step of the way during their mission together. He felt extremely grateful for the positive words Ainz had given him as wisdom, spurring, and aspiring him to work even harder than before with a newfound resolve and spirit. Simply hearing the gentle words come out of Ainz's mouth was enough to move Mare to tears, crying happily about it because his master did not give up on him.

Background

Mare was created to be the brother of Aura by his creator Bukubukuchagama. The reason why Mare is so submissive to Aura stems from how his creator wants that sibling-type relationship to be. Since she apparently believed that the younger brother should obey the elder sister, it was Mare's duty to listen and heed the words of Aura even when they are partnered and paired together during missions assigned by Ainz. (Gag between Peroroncino and Bukubukuchagama).

Whenever they had to visit the other Floor Guardians for fun or do other things, Mare and his sister would always inform one another where they were headed. That was because the two are assigned to guard their Floor together by order of the Supreme Beings.

As Mare tended to stay in the Amphitheater for the time being, it was the duty of his sister to go patrol the forest in the meantime. If he intended to leave the location, it was Mare's job to report to Aura ahead of time before proceeding further.

Chronology

The Undead King Arc

Main article: The Undead King Arc

When Momonga teleports to the 6th Floor and enters the Amphitheater while being greeted by his sister, Mare has his presence noticed by his master. Mare is told by his master to show himself. Realizing Mare is not heeding to his command, the elf is called out by Aura to also pay his respects to their master. When Mare takes too long to respond to the protocol, his sister gets angry and begins scolding him for his inability to act quick on his feet. Feeling threatened by sister's threats physically, he gathers up his courage and greets Momonga, shortly later apologizing to his master for the long wait he has caused. According to Aura, Mare feels scared and afraid in the presence of his master. While Aura converses with Momonga about wishing intruders can invade their floor, Mare voices his fear by not wanting them to come. This, in turn, forces Mare to be taken away by his sister to have a brief, private discussion and scolding him for what he says. Mare is on his knees in front of Aura, who hurls a torrent of abuse at him, only to be stopped by Ainz, who wants Aura to forgive him.

Wondering why Momonga has come to his floor, Mare is shocked to hear that he is planning to do some training along with performing experiments while using both his magic and his guild weapon. When Momonga asks Aura if she wants to fight his summoned Primal Fire Elemental, his sister accepts happily. Although Mare is delighted to hear from his master that they will get to see the power of the guild weapon, he isn't very fond of the idea on fighting and testing the entity out himself. During the summoning of such a monster, he is protected and shielded by her sister's own servants, the Dragonkins from the elemental's fire effect that is unleashed along the way. After it is summoned, he refuses to go along with her sister's acceptance to fight by attempting to excuse himself and flee the scene about to unfold. In the end, before he can even get the chance to make his escape, Mare is enthusiastically dragged off by his sister to join and assist her in the battle. After he and Aura defeat the elemental, Mare returns back to Momonga's side while feeling somewhat exhausted and tired.

As a result, Mare is given a drink of water from Momonga, who appreciates the hard work he put forth while fighting the elemental with his sister. Mare thanks Momonga for his act of benevolence towards him and his sister, coming to the realization that their master is not as terrifying as he initially thought he was.

Once the other Floor Guardians arrive at the Amphitheater, he joins them in a formal salutation towards Momonga. Together, they collectively pay their respects and admire the powerful presence their master has. Additionally, when he is asked by Momonga about what to do to conceal the Great Tomb of Nazarick, Mare suggests covering the walls in mud and plants together as a way to camouflage it. When Momonga asks for confirmation from Mare if utilizing heaps of dirt to conceal the walls is workable, he believes that it should be possible as long as he is given permission by the latter to do so. Hence, it is decided by Ainz that Mare and Aura will be given the task of piling up the dirt from the nearby land close to Nazarick to make dummy hills as camouflage. Alongside his sister, Mare is given permission to use any resources from the other floors in Nazarick besides their own to help them with the task at hand.[1]

Since the meeting is over and Momonga has left their vicinity, Mare is the first to voice his thoughts on how scary their master's Despair Aura was. When Mare is questioned by Demiurge about breeding children for the sake of Nazarick, he is dumbfounded and flabbergasted on how to respond. Nonetheless, he regains his composure quickly enough to say that he will do whatever he can to help his master to make that happen at some point. Mare is promised by Demiurge that he will one day teach the elf on how to make children. Mare is also advised by Demiurge not to conduct breeding experiments on his own without their master's permission, considering the operations in Nazarick are currently running smoothly at the moment. Mare agrees with what Demiurge, believing that increasing their numbers in Nazarick right now won't do any good for them. While so, Mare informs Demiurge that the reason why he is dressed this way is due to his creator's decision of turning him into a trap.[2]

Later, Mare recruits several undead and golems to help him on his current task. According to Momonga, who is watching from afar, it appears Mare is camouflaging the walls of Nazarick with his magic. Demiurge notes that Mare's workload is only going to continue increasing further now that some gaps will be left after moving the earth, which will need to be filled with plants. Shortly thereafter, Mare ends up spotting his master and meets up with him to talk about the work being done to ensure the security of Nazarick. After some complicated exchange of words back and forth concerning the reward decided by Momonga, Mare finally accepts the Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown that is handed to him by his master. Moving forward, Mare promised Momonga that he will work harder than before so that his master will not be disappointed by him. On the other hand, Mare is informed by Albedo, who arrives later at the scene, to tell him that their master is dressed in armor to make sure that the former won't have his duty disturbed and interrupted while he works. Not only that, but Mare is also advised by Momonga to take a break before he continues the camouflage work, which the former complies to do.[3]

The Emissary of the King Arc

Main article: The Emissary of the King Arc

Mare is shown sleeping when a messenger from Ainz comes to the 6th Floor. Having been awoken by Aura, he quickly gets out of bed to greet the Death Knight, who has already been shown in by his sister. Upon hearing the undead's questions from their master, Mare, like his sister, is confused, but nonetheless believes Ainz has a reason. On their interpersonal relationships, Aura answers for Mare, stating he is a bookworm and hardly goes out. She berates him to make friends, to which Mare meekly agrees. He is recommended by Aura to start with the librarian, Titus Annaeus Secundus since they have similar interests. On the topic of their desires, Mare wants some plant monsters to raise to protect the floor, as opposed to Aura wanting a new magical beast.[4]

The Guardians' Vacation Arc

Main article: The Guardians' Vacation Arc

When Ainz suggests that the Guardians take a vacation, Mare is deeply troubled and confused by his master's suggestion. Having not the slightest clue how to handle his break time, Mare pleads with Ainz to tell him how to spend their rest days off. Mare thinks that perhaps the reason behind why Ainz is giving him some to take a break and rest is because he failed his master.

While spending his time with the Guardians in private, Mare brings up the health exam the Supreme Being Herohero once spoke of doing. Since Herohero was an Elder Black Ooze, he is unsure what the Supreme Being's internal liver organ would look like, assuming the slime had one in the first place. Near the end of the conversation with them, Mare promises the other Guardians that he will continue working his hardest and be of use to everyone in Nazarick.[5]

The Dark Warrior Arc

Main article: The Dark Warrior Arc

Before heading to E-Rantel, Ainz orders Mare and his sister to scout the Great Forest of Tob so that they can ensure the safety of the Great Tomb of Nazarick and collect information. Because of this string of tasks, Mare, Aura, the vassals designated for construction, and other powerful entities invade the forest and disrupt the balance of power within it.[6]

The Bloody Valkyrie Arc

Main article: The Bloody Valkyrie Arc

Ainz orders Mare and Albedo to eliminate Kralgra to keep the affair a secret. Mare uses his magic on the forest so that no one can escape. After having already killed the first person, Mare drags the corpse behind a tree before proceeding to his next target. He immobilizes his second target, Igvarge, and kills him by crushing the man's skull with his staff. Although he doubts his performance with how the adventurer was killed brutally, Mare is happy to know from Albedo that Ainz will surely be happy for what he did to the man.

Shortly thereafter, he helps Albedo bring the corpses of Kralgra back to Nazarick.[7] He and his sister accompany Ainz to a location that happens to be nearby to where Shalltear is positioned at before they part ways with their master to carry out their tasks.

As Ainz proceeds to engage Shalltear in a death battle from then onward, one of the tasks Mare and his sister have been ordered to do is to carefully monitor the area from afar. Having been given legendary items, he and Aura are given the additional order of withdrawing if the enemies who are responsible for brainwashing Shalltear appear.[8]

Once the fight comes to an end, Mare is informed by Aura that the victor of the battle is their master. Hearing this, he suggests they collect Shalltear's equipment drop after the battle, to which his sister says their master has that already taken care of. Mare and Aura later head back to Nazarick as instructed since their task was now over.

After Ainz returns to Nazarick, Mare and the other Floor Guardians beg him to never get in harm's way again and to allow them to handle any future incidents that may come from now on. Although the other Guardians advise Ainz to give Shalltear a harsh punishment, Mare instead suggests to Ainz that they are better off not being too strict on her. He considers removing all traces that remains in the battle, but Ainz suggests there is no need for him to do so because it will be used to fabricate an incident caused by the Sealing Crystal while fighting the vampire.[9]

The Show Must Go On!

Main article: The Show Must Go On! Arc

Mare and Aura are seen together working in the Great Forest of Tob. Mare is confused as to what they are doing, to which his sister explains that she is building a second Great Tomb of Nazarick. Upon hearing her response, he becomes uncomfortable and is afraid that his sister is planning to secede from Nazarick. Aura denies his claim, but before she can explain further, Ainz arrives through a Gate. To his relief, Mare learns that the structure Aura is building is simply a decoy base for Nazarick. At a meeting with Ainz and the Floor Guardians, he listens to his master's plan of implementing a fringe benefit system. Mare requests to create a sea on the 6th Floor of Nazarick.[10]

The Sealed Evil Tree Arc

Mare, alongside with the other Floor Guardians, are ordered to fight together against Zy'tl Q'ae and to secure the herb and to complete Ainz's adventurer quest from Pluton Ainzach.[11]

The Lizard Man Heroes Arc

Main article: The Lizard Man Heroes Arc

After Cocytus loses the war against the lizardmen, Mare takes part in a meeting alongside the rest of his fellow Floor Guardians concerning the former's defeat. During the meeting, he and his sister Aura both shed tears emotionally after seeing the way on how Ainz chooses to forgive Shalltear for her betrayal. After the meeting is over and Ainz leaves, Mare shares his thoughts with the Floor Guardians. He speculates that maybe Ainz intentionally set Cocytus' expedition up to fail from the very beginning, considering why their master allowed Cocytus to use only weak undead.[12]

Mare and the other Floor Guardians appear next to Ainz when he addresses the lizardmen. When Aura voices her disapproval of having their guests be brought into her construction, Mare is an exception among the Floor Guardians to not be entirely against her idea. While everyone nods their head with Aura's reasoning in order to convince their master, Mare, on the other hand, chooses not to act accordingly like them and instead waits for his master to make the final decision.[13]

The Search for Hamsuke Arc

Main article: The Search for Hamsuke Arc

Mare is conscripted by his sister Aura to find Hamsuke, who has gotten lost somewhere on the 1st Floor of Nazarick. He figures that they could be at a disadvantage, considering Hamsuke cannot be found on the floor they preside over. When Aura suggested taking Hamsuke's pelt for herself if it turn out dead, Mare refuses her idea as that corpse could be put to use for a lot of Nazarick's experiments. Although there are no signs of teleport gates being used, Mare believes that in the event that Hamsuke did get teleported by a trap, it should not have been sent so far down. Hence, he advised that they keep on searching for the creature's whereabouts until they reach the 4th and 5th Floors as Hamsuke cannot be found on the 3rd Floor.

On the other hand, he considers using [Detect Life], but chooses not to because Kyouhukou's Black Capsule contains too many lifeforms to count. Mare and his sister attempt to continue tracking down the hamster to the 2nd Floor and are soon joined by Albedo and Shalltear. In the end, the four find Hamsuke alive. However, none of the female Floor Guardians want to approach the beast, as much to their horror, Hamsuke has a cockroach on her head. The other three push Mare to use his staff to crush the bug in response, but Mare is unsure and is afraid of killing Hamsuke since it is Ainz's pet. He isn't able to do anything to the hamster as the antics of the female Floor Guardians cause Hamsuke to flee in terror after being threatened with death.[14]

The Two Leaders Arc

Main article: The Two Leaders Arc

Back in Nazarick, Mare sits quietly in the Amphitheater and reads a book called "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." Sensing the teleport gate being used to come here, he pauses his reading and goes to confront Pulcinella.

Mare is given a secret message from Demiurge's servant, Pulcinella. He reads the message and sees that it is an invitation from Ainz to all the male Floor Guardians to join him for a bath. Meanwhile, he learns from Pulcinella that Demiurge is busy conducting several Breeding Experiments with the best of intentions in mind. Hence, he doesn't understand why the participants in his experiments seem to have some hatred towards Demiurge for what he is doing to them.

After knowing why he can't pass this folder to his sister Aura, Mare circles "Going" to show acceptance of his master's invitation. He understands that it is his duty to pass on this secret message to Cocytus in Guren's stead as the Area Guardian is busy guarding Demiurge's domain while its master is away. In order to keep the content a secret from the female Floor Guardians, Mare decides to contact Aura and lies to her sister about the reason why he needs to go to the 5th Floor. Before long, Mare heads out to search for Cocytus using the Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown, only to find that he isn't in Nazarick, but at the lizardmen's village according to the Frost Virgins.

Realizing he can't step outside Nazarick without high-level vassals to accompany him on the mission, he requests the Frost Virgins' assistance to bring the Floor Guardian to him. His request is turned down as they cannot disobey Cocytus's order to defend his domain other than their master Ainz. This leaves Mare with no other choice but to pay a visit to Nazarick's library, Ashurbanipal. There, he greets Librarian J and has the undead guide him to where Titus Annaeus Secundus is at in the search for the head librarian's assistance. Not only that, but Mare also goes out of his way to return "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" to Librarian J and is recommended by the latter to read some unknown book concerning a murder. Upon reaching the Head Librarian's location, Mare asks Titus a favor in exchange for his help.

As a result, Mare assists Titus on one of his experiments involving the creation of Magic Scrolls while under the condition of not using any of his dragons for it. After assisting Titus, Mare is allowed to borrow high-level vassals like Cocceius, Ulpius, Aelius, Fulvius, and Aurelius as promised. Before leaving Nazarick to visit the lizardmen's village in search for Cocytus once more, he hands his Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown to someone else along the way.

After reaching the lizardmen's village, Mare and his undead bodyguards pay their deepest respects to the statue of their master and praise the lizardmen for their dedication and hard work. When that is done, he then orders Aurelius to find someone among the lizardmen who knows where Cocytus is. Shortly after, he was greeted by Shasuryu Shasha, who tells him that Cocytus isn't in the village unfortunately after receiving information by Aurelius on that specific lizardman in question. Mare is informed that Cocytus has gone out on a quest to subjugate the toadmen in the northern part of the lake. While waiting for Cocytus's return to the lizardmen's village, he discusses with Shasuryu about the toadmen and the fish farm his people are constructing. Mare also informs Shasuryu that the food being provided to the lizardmen are created by the power of their master and other 40 Supreme Beings. He reaffirms to Shasuryu that Ainz is their god and will convey the lizardman's kindness to Ainz.

Finishing up his task, Mare returns to Nazarick and hands the invitation folder back to Ainz. The two exchange words as Ainz ends up by expressing his love for the NPCs, including Mare himself. He is awestruck by the way Ainz acts and behaves as a leader, hugging him and burying his face in his master's shoulder. While shedding tears about his master's kind words, Mare emotionally and tearfully appreciates Ainz's decision to stay with them unlike the other Supreme Beings, including his creator, who left. Suddenly, Albedo becomes unable to control her emotions and attempts to rape Ainz. Mare assists several Eight-Edge Assassins in restraining Albedo while his master punishes her to three days of solitary confinement in the Frozen Prison for assaulting him.

Later, Mare joins Ainz, Cocytus, and Demiurge in the Spa Resort. Before heading inside the bath, Mare is cautioned by his master to be careful and not recklessly run around as the floor is wet. Once they are in the bath together, Mare and his master take turns washing, cleaning, and scrubbing each other's back using a brush. Mare reassures Ainz that bathing in hot water for too long is no problem for him as long as he can protect himself with magic. While Mare is in the bath discussing with his master and fellow male Floor Guardians, they are interrupted by the female Floor Guardians, who are attacked by the Lion Golem.[15]

The Dark Hero's Story Arc

Main article: The Dark Hero's Story Arc

Mare and his sister attend a meeting with the rest of the Floor Guardians to decide on what kind of rewards they wish to receive from Ainz. During the meeting, he scolds Aura for trying to take Rororo as a pet without the lizardmen's permission under Cocytus's domain, which he believes is deemed unacceptable.

When Albedo suggests that they should keep the price low in regards to the coupon that lets the person sleep with Ainz, he points out the fault of doing so as being disrespectful to Ainz.

While listening to Demiurge's suggestions, he makes a recommendation that they should take a piece of paper and write the bidding amount on the coupon, and reveal it together. Demiurge likes Mare's idea and is willing to use it twice first in the auction.[16]

Ainz Raises Money Arc

Main article: Ainz Raises Money Arc

Mare is present with his fellow Floor Guardians at a meeting with their master Ainz Ooal Gown. During the meeting, when Ainz inquires about Mare's reward, his answer is that he wants the same sleeping voucher-like Shalltear suggested before.

Like the others, he is given three gold coins to be used as his salary by Ainz. In the next meeting, Mare presents his liege a pendant that was made out of those gold coins.

During another meeting with Ainz, Mare presents and tells his master that he also bought a wooden Momon statue like his sister Aura did, except his is the Bloody Version.[17]

Table Game to Understand Humans Arc

At Ainz's request, Mare, along with several other Floor Guardians, is asked to play a table game as an exercise to better understand humans.[18]

The Men in the Kingdom Arc

Main article: The Men in the Kingdom Arc

During Operation Gehenna, Mare is paired with Entoma along with a force of summoned monsters as planned out by Demiurge. Mare discusses with Demiurge, stating his concern for their enemy's chance of escaping, Sebas not having a World Item to protect himself and so on. Mare is already informed by Demiurge ahead of time about everything, including his plan. For that reason, if an emergency arises where they cannot contact Demiurge, Mare will be directing the operation in his stead.

Before they set out, Mare and everyone else present in the meeting are informed by Demiurge about phase two of Operation Gehenna in great details. The mission that Mare and Entoma are assigned to do is raid one of the Eight Fingers's bases.

Once the mission begins, he arrives at Hilma's mansion and covers the building with vines through his magic. Together with Entoma, Mare infiltrates the mansion and takes care of the guests and security while interrogating them silently without being caught by Hilma. Shortly later, Mare finds Hilma attempting to escape by using an underground passage after learning that she is the most important person in the mansion. Nonetheless, he effortlessly subdues her by breaking her legs with his staff and later drags her back to Nazarick for further interrogation.[19]

While carrying out the operation, Mare is instructed to create an earthquake as a result of the intense fight happening between Jaldabaoth and the adventurer Momon.

When Jaldabaoth and Momon land in a different building, Mare is also present there. He attends a private meeting between Demiurge and Ainz, pulling up a chair for his master to sit before they begin their discussion about Operation Gehenna. While Demiurge explains his plans to Ainz, Mare is gestured by the former to take out a bag containing Armageddon Evil and shows what is being used as part of their operation. According to Demiurge, Mare seems to have given them an excellent opportunity which will be explained once they return back to Nazarick after fulfilling the operation. Ainz also clears up Mare's confusion whether the armor he wore during the fight with Jaldabaoth is made from his magic, to which he says it is not as he uses a transformation spell to allow him in wearing the warrior equipment. After the meeting comes to an end, Mare is instructed by Demiurge to send a signal via earthquake once more to the Pleiades to resume fighting and begin the next phase of the operation.[20]

After Hilma's willpower is completely broken due to the interrogation method used by Kyouhukou, Mare travels with Aura to Eight Fingers’ secret meeting place to apprehend the members there. Mare informs Aura about the reason behind Hilma's fearful behavior towards them as Kyouhukou was responsible for the current state she is in now.[21]

The Invaders of the Large Tomb Arc

Main article: The Invaders of the Large Tomb Arc

While Demiurge explains the success of Operation Gehenna, he notes that Nazarick has successfully subdued the members of the criminal syndicate’s top leadership with the aid of Mare, Neuronist Painkill, and Kyouhukou.[22]

After the worker group Foresight has been systematically defeated, Ainz then orders Aura to take two of the members, Hekkeran Termite and Imina, to the giant hole, stating that Gashokukochuuou has started complaining about running out of nesting room. However, Aura manages to convince Ainz to let Mare handle it instead. Hence, upon being informed by his sister, Mare is sent over to Gashokukochuuou's location and takes Hekkeran and Imina to the Area Guardian in her stead.

Once that is done, Mare and Aura are given the task by Ainz to act as envoys and send a message to the Baharuth Empire. For this reason, they depart from Nazarick while riding a dragon to reach the Empire. After landing in the Imperial Palace's courtyard within Arwintar, Mare is instructed by his sister to use his magic to kill the humans within the courtyard, which he does. Seeing the threat Mare and Aura have imposed on the Empire, this leaves the Emperor of the nation no other choice but to invite Mare and his sister over for a meeting reception.[23]

The Magic Caster of Destroy Arc

Main article: The Magic Caster of Destroy Arc

Upon being welcomed into the Imperial Palace, Mare introduces himself to the Emperor of the Baharuth Empire.

As he answers the Emperor's question, Mare informs Jircniv that Ainz has ordered him and his sister to travel to the Empire by riding on their dragons to get there. During the rest of the conversation, Mare leaves it to his sister to handle talks with the Emperor from start to end before they return back to Nazarick after it is over.[24]

Once the meeting delegation between the Empire and Nazarick comes to an end with the envoys leaving, Mare and the Floor Guardians engage their master in a conversation of manipulating the Empire into helping them create the Sorcerer Kingdom. Hearing their master's plan, Mare ponders if everything has all been for this moment.

Mare thoughtfully thinks that talks of negotiation with the Emperor might leave traces behind if not done within the tomb. Taking this into consideration, he concludes that perhaps his master's plan is to specially bring the Emperor into Nazarick to minimize the amount of leaks. Hearing from Demiurge's explanation that the Emperor is planning to secretly betray them, Mare suggests that Nazarick takes the initiative of betraying them and wipe him out first.[25]

During the war, Mare serves as Ainz Ooal Gown's attendant, accompanying him to the Imperial Army's base camp at Katze Plains where he stood by his master's side. He applauds and congratulated his master's success in summoning five Dark Youngs while watching them slaughter the Royal Army. Nonetheless, Mare is told by his master to not lower his guard while the Massacre at Katze Plains is happening before them.[26]

The Ruler of Conspiracy Arc

Main article: The Ruler of Conspiracy Arc

In the morning, both Mare and his sister visit Ainz. Although he shows concern if the visit to Ainz is a bother for the latter, his master reassures him that it is not. Meanwhile, Ainz informs Mare that he has been tasked with building an Underground Tomb on the outskirts of E-Rantel.

While this is happening, the three elves who were spared during the Invasion of the Large Tomb are attempting to act as parental surrogates to Mare and his sister. Mare complains on the fact that they keep trying to go out of their way and help dress him. Nonetheless, Ainz hopes that they can help with Mare's and his sister's developments as fellow dark elves. In a way, Mare and Aura are given the elf slaves to take care of on their floor.

At the same time, both the two dark elves are picked up by Ainz, placed on each lap, and coddled in fatherly affection. Seeing Albedo's jealousy, Mare tells Ainz that he is willing to give up his spot for her sake. For that reason, under Ainz's order, he allows Mare to get off of his master's lap and lets Albedo take his spot instead.

Additionally, Mare, alongside his sister, decides to make a suggestion to Ainz that boys should wear girls' clothes, and girls should wear boys' clothes. However, the suggestion is struck down by Ainz when he convinces everyone in the room that the two dark elves are dressed this way because their creator wanted them to be special. When Ainz asks the two whether it is fine for them to give away their specialness to the people of the Sorcerer Kingdom, Mare is the first to adamantly voice his refusal aloud. Mare makes a vow to Ainz that he will never let anyone but himself or his sister have the specialness granted exclusively to them by their creator.

On the other hand, as Aura considers thinking over how to replenish the Sorcerer Kingdom's resources, Mare easily convinces her that they shouldn't worry about it since their master will have that matter settled. When Albedo decides to leave Pandora's Actor with the task of managing Nazarick and E-Rantel while she is away, Mare and his sister are confident that it will be no problem if it's Ainz's creation.[27]

The Craftsman of Dwarf Arc

Main article: The Craftsman of Dwarf Arc

Shalltear informs Mare that Ainz has given her the task of maintaining surveillance on the Great Tomb of Nazarick since she and their master will be traveling to the Dwarf Kingdom. Mare is given the order by Ainz to proceed to Shalltear's room, the Adipocere Chamber, where he will do his duty in the meantime while the vampire is away. Not only that, but Mare is also responsible for safekeeping Shalltear's Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown as she departs from Nazarick to go on Ainz's expedition. With Shalltear gone, Mare temporarily acts as the protector of the tomb.[28]

Mare and Aura attend a meeting to create a mythology of their master in order to solidify his hold over the masses. In the twins' myth story, they weave a classic super sentai story where a group known as "The Ainz Five" fight monsters to save the world until they decide to eradicate the human race. The humans attempt to resist, but the Ainz Five transform into a giant golem, wiping out humanity in a never-ending cycle.[29]

In the Audience Room, Mare is present with the other Floor Guardians and his master Ainz to hear out the plan and situation surrounding the Sorcerer Kingdom. There, he quietly stands by and watches Shalltear bring Hilma Cygnaeus over to Ainz as a witness who can answer their questions about the attack on the Sorcerer Kingdom's trade caravan of grains. Every Floor Guardian at the meeting approves of the punishment Ainz has suggested for Hilma Cygnaeus to do. Once that matter is concluded, discussion about Philip resumes where it left off while the Overseer explains their strategy for the Fall of the Re-Estize Kingdom.

When Ainz states that maybe Philip did what he did without thinking about the consequences of his actions first, Albedo doubts the nobleman to be this stupid. However, as Demiurge shows his support to Ainz's notion, Mare and his sister also agree with their master's forethought. As Demiurge inquires further from the Floor Guardians on what punishment they should impose on Philip, Mare agrees with his sister's idea of having to kill the nobleman for what he did to their caravan.[30]

After a month has passed since the Sorcerer Kingdom's declaration of war, Mare is among one of the Floor Guardians to have been able to successfully lay siege on territories be it a city or village within the Re-Estize Kingdom.[31] When the war first starts, Mare is asked by Ainz to destroy a small town. Although he feels terribly ashamed by how poor the results have been for him from that attack on the town, Mare is kindly and gently encouraged by Ainz to study hard and to better himself. Hearing this, it motivated Mare to try even harder than before and live up to Ainz's expectations in the same way as Bukubukuchagama had for an elf like him. If not for his master's encouragement, Mare doubts he would be able to pull himself together even with the encouragement of the other NPCs such as his fellow Floor Guardians.

While Ainz and his 10,000 undead army arrive at the Re-Estize capital, it is shown that Mare has been given the order to use his magic to aid the creation of the fronts initially. Later, due to a specific reason, Mare has been relegated to simply watching the soldiers build the front at Ainz’s side. In the meantime, Ainz thinks that it may be a good idea to leave all civil engineering tasks in the future to Mare at some point after this war. Not only that, but also have Mare take in new subordinates like demi-humans and heteromorphs who are adept at digging tunnels underground under his command to lead.

After Ainz returns from his meeting with Zanac, Mare has a discussion with Aura and Cocytus about the upcoming siege of the capital. With Mare as second-in-command after Cocytus, he and the Floor Guardian are permitted to use the full extent of their abilities and are told to not leave a single citizen of the Re-Estize Kingdom unscathed. Once the battle begins, Mare and his Hanzos set off from the front he has established in front of the capital. Mare is the one in charge of casting offensive AOE spells to render the entire capital into a mountain of ash.[32] Alongside the accompaniment of his Hanzos, Mare went into hiding somewhere from within Re-Estize where nobody in the Royal Capital could easily find him undetected without notice while using his magic.

In the battle that commences three days prior to the arrival of the Sorcerer Kingdom's forces at the Royal Capital, Mare has long since killed off a significant number of humans so far. Considering how vast and large the surroundings of Re-Estize is, Mare is starting to figure out how to properly demolish a city more efficiently and kill every human within it using his AOE spell, [Earthquake]. This is after he has practiced destroying multiple cities with his master through several attempts while having gained relevant experience for it before reaching the Royal Capital. From that experience alone, Mare is able to develop a clear understanding of how difficult it is to destroy a city and how hard of a task it is to kill every single inhabitant who resides in it. Mare acknowledges that guaranteeing every human living in the city died along with the structures' destruction is a challenging thing to do and requires some time to accomplish.

For that reason, upon arriving at Re-Estize with the Hanzos, Mare sits by himself on top of the second-highest tower in the Ro-Lente Castle, overlooking the Royal Capital to prepare his spellcasting undisturbed and uninterrupted. During his stay there, he uses the long-range spell, [Earthquake] on the capital's surroundings multiple times ever since then. He casts that same spell repeatedly and continuously until every structure in the city is completely destroyed and reduced into a mountain of rubble. At the same time, Mare makes sure to kill off all the humans he can within this magically induced [Earthquake]'s area range of effect created and casted by him. After recalling Ainz's words of encouragement, Mare becomes determined to destroy more towns and cities and kill more people to become the person Bukubukuchagama wanted him to be.

While overseeing his mission, he ends up encountering Climb along the way upon spotting the warrior heading to the small warehouse to hide items. Mare kindly warns the warrior to leave while he still can before the former continues destroying the buildings around him. Once Climb leaves without attempting to put up a fight with him, Mare resumes his usual mission of demolishing the surrounding structures, continuing to bring forth destruction in its wake until the task is completed.[33]

After the conclusion of the war, Ainz seeking to get away from the burdens of rulership, decided to use the opportunity to take Mare and his sister to the Elf Country so that they could make friends.[34]

Trivia

  • Mare's name is Italian, with "mare" meaning "sea," "Bello" meaning "beautiful," and "Fiore" meaning "flower."
  • In the Web Novel, Mare Bello Fiore doesn't exist.
  • Mare is the first NPC before Albedo and Pandora's Actor to have been given the Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown from Ainz. He wears the ring on his left hand.
  • Like his sister, he is one of the few races in Nazarick that will eventually age, but it's unknown if they will die or remain a certain age forever.
  • According to the author Maruyama, many years from now, Mare will become a handsome/good-looking guy and won't cross-dress anymore. Even as an adult, he’ll still be fond of Ainz. Maruyama described Mare's relationship with Ainz as familial, the significance isn’t the homosexual longing to be with an older brother.[35]

Quotes

  • (To Aura): "I, I would rather not have to meet intruders...they, they're scary..."
  • (To Aura): "Ah, I suddenly remembered that I had something urgent to do..."
  • (To Aura after provoking Shalltear): "But, but Nee-chan, maybe you shouldn’t have said that..."
  • (To Momonga): "A, a very gentle person."
  • (To Demiurge): "If, if it helps Momonga-sama...I'm willing to contribute. But how will I have children?"
  • (To Demiurge): "That, that's true. I've heard that all the underlings were created after careful calculation by one of the Supreme Beings...if we carelessly increase our numbers, we'll be scolded. I, I don't want to be scolded by Momonga-sama..."
  • (To Demiurge about the way he dresses): "This was Bukubukuchagama-sama's decision. She said this was called a 'trap', so it should have nothing to do with my gender."
  • (To Momonga): "I, I can't do that, how could I not speak respectfully to a Supreme Being...actually, Nee-chan shouldn’t be doing that too. It, it's terribly rude..."
  • (To Momonga): "It, it's not like that! We exist to give our all for the Supreme Beings, so working hard is only to be expected!"
  • (To Momonga): "Momonga-sama, th-thank you for this great gift...I promise that from today onward I will work harder so I do not disappoint you!"
  • (To the Floor Guardians): "Ah, y-yes. Ah, I was wondering why he had sent out such weak undead at first. Ah, ah..per-perhaps...Ainz-sama had planned on the attack failing from the start..."
  • (To Ainz): "No...not at all. I simply thought you looked very handsome, Ainz-sama."
  • (To Ainz): "F-forgive me, Ainz-sama. But, I really do think you look handsome. Even just now, the way you sat down looked just like how the supreme ruler of Nazarick ought to be"
  • (To Ainz): "A-Ainz-sama! Please...please let me help you wash your back!"
  • (To Aura about Hilma): "I, I think she means being taken to Kyouhukou's room, where her organs were being constantly devoured from the inside."
  • (To the Floor Guardians and other NPCs about Ainz): "Then, then. M-may I try? Erm...because Ainz-sama is very kind, it might be good to let people know that. Then, then, m-maybe we could try, the Merciful King?"
  • (To Ainz about Aura and his creator): "Never! I'll never let anyone but Nee-chan have Bukubukuchagama-sama's specialness!"
