"———————Tsu!"
— The Grim Reaper's first and last word.

Grim Reaper (死神) was an unknown enemy that appeared in Mass for the Dead from the Chaos Zone.

Appearance[]

The reaper's face is expressionless like a mask with a iron spiked halo rising behind its neck. A looming specter like entity cloaked in a velvet robe, with a wavy white collar. The only areas besides its head that were exposed are its mid-section which is narrow revealing a bandaged waist and its seemingly automaton limbs.

Personality[]

The Grim Reaper shows little to no personality whatsoever. Although that is the case, it was identified as a male by his prey, as it never said a word. So far, its sole objective was to kill Seiya Ryuuguuin and his comrades. Interestingly, the entity seemed to have prior knowledge on Valkyrie and her destructive technique, going so far as to single her out, deeming her to be the greatest threat.

Background[]

The Grim Reaper's past is unknown, as are its origins, though Seiya Ryuuguuin believed the entity to be some sort of being that lived between various dimensions.

Chronology[]

Mass for the Dead Arc[]

Main article: Mass for the Dead Arc

The entity appeared when a Crack forced its way into the Divine Realm. Seiya Ryuuguuin sensing the danger of the unnatural portal managed to ground himself with a sword and prevented his comrades Valkyrie, Ristarte, and Adenela from being sucked into its pull. However before they could handle the situation, the entity made its presence known and launched an attacked from within the Crack at them. Its attacks destroyed the sword that was holding them down, allowing the Crack to pull the goddesses and hero in as a result.

After being pulled into the Crack, the four found themselves in the Great Tomb of Nazarick, where they were placed under its custody until Momonga could determine a way to send them back. Along the way, the four journeyed to the Great Forest of Tob to hunt for provisions as Seiya refused to accept the food present in Nazarick, paranoid that it was unfit for human or goddess consumption. At the same time, the group aided Solution Epsilon, Narberal Gamma, Slimeko and the protagonist in subduing the Chaos Beasts emerging from the local Crack. After the monsters were subjugated, Valkyrie impatient to return back to the Divine Realm, decided to unleash her power and call a [Gate] through an Order to Ishtar hoping that the veteran goddess would be able to hear them and grant them a way home. Instead of an [Gate] appearing, the Crack reacted and the entity that was lurking in the Crack from before appeared once more and attacked Valkyrie. Seiya theorized that the Order which Valkyrie made had helped it to pinpoint their location. The group try and battle the thing, but it easily dodges or withstands all their attacks without injury. It also prioritized attacked Valkyrie, interfering with her methods to use her powerful attacks. In face of this threat, Seiya orders a retreat and uses a [Meteor Strike] to cover their escape. The attacked created a crater where the Grim Reaper stood, but the entity was unharmed.

Later on, Momonga and Seiya formulated a plan to destroy the creature. They moved battlefield to an open plain and implanted several time stop countermeasures to prevent the Grim Reaper from using its powers. Sadly it when it came it displayed that it was equally fast without its temporal abilities and continued to attack the goddesses and hero. After a while the Grim Reaper concentrated all its attention on Valkyrie trying to eliminate her. His focus left it blind to an attack by Seiya who utilized [Valhalla's Gate], the very same attack that the Grim Reaper was stopping Valkyrie from completing. It was summarily enclosed within the spell and impaled to death. The Grim Reaper vanished within the gate, finally ending its threat to Seiya and Nazarick.[1]

When Shido Itsuka surprisingly returned to Nazarick via a Crack, after hearing from the young man about someone within the Crack intentionally pulled them in, Momonga and Demiurge showed them a video of the Grim Reaper. It served as a precedent of "existence behind the Cracks" that Nazarick was so far aware of. Like Shido's comrades, the previous visitors to Nazarick also faced something that pulled them into the anomaly. A being similar to something from their world and defeated, but with the possession of time manipulation abilities.

The someone turned out to be a psychic manifestation of Kurumi Tokisaki insecurities of her deceased clones. The psychic energy was explained to have leaked into the space between worlds where it coalesced and took form for an eye patch wearing younger version of Kurumi Tokisaki. Acting as a powerful clone of the original, this Kurumi Tokisaki only desired revenge on the real Kurumi Tokisaki for being discarded. The entity proceeded to destroy E-Rantel, killing all of its inhabitants within using the City of Devouring of Time to absorb the life force of every living being. The clone then invaded Nazarick by using her connection to Kurumi Tokisaki's shadow, allowing her to sneak into Nazarick and successfully kill Shido. To prevent the events from coming to pass, the real Kurumi Tokisaki used [Sixth Bullet Vav] on Yoshino Himekawa to send her mind back in time to a point before her clone wrecked havoc on the New World. Yoshino and Yoshinon armed with this knowledge then approached Cocytus of these disturbing future who then secretly informed Momonga.

To prevent both calamities, the destruction of E-Rantel and Shido's death, Momonga had his guest visit E-Rantel. The pretense was to have Shido use his sealing abilities on the women of the New World in an experiment. This was of course to put Shido and his friends at the place where the clone of Kurumi Tokisaki would appear and destroy the city. The group with the help of Cocytus cheated fate by interfering with the clone's plot driving her away from the city. Though all of the inhabitants fell in comas due to the effects of City of Devouring of Time, there were no deaths.

To seal the clone, Shido then approached the former with Kurumi Tokisaki on a double date. The entity humored by the action allowed it proceeded, induling herself in various venues such as a cat cafe and shopping spree set up in the Great Forest of Tob. However the clone still intended to kill Kurumi Tokisaki to affirm her existence. A battle between Shido friends and their Nazarick allies ensued, but it mostly became a one-sided battle as the former eliminated the clones of the eye patch Kurumi Tokisaki. Shido was unwilling to kill the clone and tried to appeal to the clone believing that her feelings toward him were sincere. She denied this as she believed that the only way to make herself unique was to destroy the original. In her declaration, the clone was foricbly altered and changed transforming into the Grim Reaper allowing it to be resurrected.

Like the original Grim Reaper, the attacks on it were harmless, and Momonga urged Shido that his sealing power was the only way to defeat it. However such a thing could only work unless Shido could coax out the Kurumi Tokisaki clone. Shido who was repeatedly attacked by the Grim Reaper, and despite his injuries continued to appealed to the clone trapped inside the reaper that she was not just a copy but real. The clone hearing him affirm that she existed retook her body changing back to her original self and allowed Shido to kiss her thus completing the sealing.[2]

Abilities and Powers[]

According to Seiya, he suspects that the Grim Reaper to be an existence similar to Crossed Thanatos as he was unable to read its stats. This reaper appears to have the ability to cross dimensions given it was able to navigate to locate a target through a Crack. The reaper also appears to have power over time, which allows this entity to stop it to appear and disappear in an area, though it's limited to one hour. Its spatial ability seems to be largely unaffected by the Crack phenomena that normally interferes with spatial transfer techniques. Even when not using its temporal abilities, the entity is capable of fast flight and is lightning fast that even a member of the Pleiades admits is hard to track down. On the other hand, the entity was even documented to be resilient and strong, able to withstand multiple magical and physical attacks by deities and several powerful agents of Nazarick and come out unhurt.

Trivia[]

  • The Grim Reaper is the second original game enemy character to emerge from a Crack. The first being Shiramochi-ō who appeared in the New Year event.
  • In Japanese culture, Grim Reapers or Shinigami were death gods that invited humans toward death.
  • Despite emerging from a Crack, it is unclear whether the Grim Reaper was a member of the Chaos Beast species. Though given the events of Brave And Undead Are Too Careful take place after the events of Volume 2 of the Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious and prior to the events in Volume 3, the Grim Reaper could have been an assassin sent by the Demon Lord from the world of Ixphoria.
