Frozen Giant (フローズンジャイアント) was a unique Chaos Beast that appeared in Mass for the Dead. Later more copies of the monster, called Ice Chaos Beasts, would appear from the same Crack that spawned it.
Appearance[]
A humanoid creature that visually resembles a golem, composed of a sphere ice armored body, with a grill that is vaguely like a grin. It is supported by a two smaller chunks of snowballs and its limbs are of equally spherical ice balls. The entire body is frozen with large chunks of ice and held together by roots. It has a featureless humanoid head that is attached to the large spherical body with a protruding icicle.
Personality[]
The monster showed very little signs of intelligence. Though the monster would be best described as a berserker, since it attacked anything that approached it, even other Chaos Beasts.
Background[]
From what CZ2128 Delta was able to deduce, a Crack had emerged into existence within a closed icy cave in the northern regions of the Azerlisia Mountains. Due to the enclosed area, the Chaos Beasts that were produced from the portal were unable to escape. However due to the contaminated miasma from the Crack, this affected the earth around it.
Somehow a lone Chaos Beast became encrusted with the soil and snow, turning it into a giant monstrosity. The new monster proceeded to destroy its brethren, seeing them as threats and then going dormant once the monsters were neutralized by it. Later on, the monster would go on to awaken and resume its aggression when the Crack regularly continued to produce Chaos Beasts into the world for it to destroy.
The cycle continued to repeat within the enclosed cave. Eventually, the repeating battles collapsed a part of the structure of the ice cave which led to opening it to the outside. With the world open to them, a few Chaos Beasts managed to slip past the giant and escape from the cavern.
Chronology[]
Mass for the Dead Arc[]
- Main article: Mass for the Dead Arc
The creature's constant blows on the emerging Chaos Beasts in the cavern resulted in it inadvertently creating a steady stream of cold air that blew from the cave and into the mountains, which soon on evolved into a cold wave that began to drive the native monsters from the northern peaks to the base of the mountains. The monsters seeking shelter targeted the village of the Green Claw, where the various lizardmen tribes were gathering to unite in response to the new changes in the world. While the monsters were not problem for the warriors of the lizardmen, the reptilian demi-humans were unprepared by the cold front that followed their attackers. The cold weather began to spill from the mountains and into the wetlands, bringing winter to the area and threatening the natives. Cocytus who was stationed at a nearby resource mine for Nazarick, quickly came to the aid of the lizardmen.
The chieftains and Floor Guardian united and managed to stay off the attacks thanks to Cocytus's intervention and the reinforcements from the skeleton miners. Using the little remaining Heatstones in the area, Cocytus managed to save Nazarick's allies from freezing to death, but sensing this was an abnormal situation, Cocytus sent a call for help to his master Momonga. Momonga having received the call, sent out three members of the Pleiades: Lupusregina Beta, CZ2128 Delta, and Entoma Vasilissa Zeta to lend their aid to the Great Lake and to investigate the incident. Upon arriving at the area, the combat maids discussed with the tribal leaders of the lizardmen to learn exactly what transpired. According to Cocytus and Zaryusu Shasha just before the monsters started migrating and the cold wave hit, a cave-in at the mine had occurred. And from the testimonies of the druids of the tribes, the maids were able to piece together that the answer to the cold wave laid north, past where the mind was located.
After following the mine path, the maids then crossed into uncharted territory where they came upon a desolate icy wasteland. They encountered various Chaos Beasts that seemingly emerged after a gust of wind blew out. The three's journey led them to a cave where they found the Crack within and also the Frozen Giant in dormancy. Lupusregina believed that the construct was harmless due to its adorable appearance. Once she attempted to approach it, the giant rose to attack her. The maid narrowly missed it, but it was enough to convince the maids that diplomacy could not be use to reason with the monster.
Entoma seeing no reason to hold back, launched herself at the giant, only to be knocked back. CZ, ordered her sisters to stay back, and demonstrated that the giant only responded and attacked when they were in close range. The maids believed that they would have ample time to solve the situation, when the Crack activated and Chaos Beasts appeared. Observing that the giant targeted the Chaos Beasts, and that its blows were causing cold air to blow out from the cavern, they deduced that the giant was the cause of the cold front.
To have less distraction while destroying the giant, the maids eliminated the Chaos Beasts first. Since using fire attacks was believed by Lupusregina to be ineffective in melting away the frozen body, CZ advised that she target the roots holding the entity together. A plan was made so that CZ would act as a target while Lupusregina would attack it from behind where it was vulnerable.
The three maids defeated the monster and proceeded to melt it down. Originally thinking that the creature was some sort of golem, they were surprised when they found that the core of the giant was actually a Chaos Beast all along. The destruction of the Frozen Giant ended the cold front and abnormal weather, allowing the temperature at the wetlands to return back to normal.
The existence of the giant was reported to Momonga and the other Floor Guardians. From their accounts, Demiurge is surprised to learn that the Frozen Giant was some sort of freak accident created from the contaminated soil. Since its discovery that the miasma could not just affect creatures but the earth, all Crack sites within Nazarick were being re-investigated to see if similar phenomena occurred.[1]
Some time before Shalltear was brainwashed, the Floor Guardian visited the Crack where the Frozen Giant appeared in the Azerlisia Mountains. Though the unique Chaos Beast was previously defeated, the Crack which it originated was an area of interest to Nazarick. After the berserk Chaos Beast vanished, the Crack acted oddly in that it did not spawn regular Chaos Beasts, but exact multiple copies of the Frozen Giant which were then named Ice Chaos Beasts. Evil Lord Envy was posted at the site to contain the monsters and supervised Shalltear, Lupusregina and two Vampire Brides engage the Chaos Beasts for training purposes.[2]
Abilities and Powers[]
Under bizarre circumstances the Frozen Giant was an amalgam of snow and ice debris centered around a Chaos Beast entity. It displayed impressive strength, in that a single blow from it is enough to create powerful wind pressure.
Despite its formidable power, it does have a few weaknesses. The giant only attacks and targets enemies that are within a few feet of it nearby. Once outside of its range, the giant will simply fall asleep. Additionally, a flaw in its structure were the vines that held most of its limbs it place. Though the ice entombed body made it impervious to fire attacks, the vines were still susceptible to damage.
Active[]
- Giant Hail Hammer: An attack which shoots out large icicles from the ground where the arm hits and attacks the whole area.
