Elf Trees (エルフツリー) are trees used by elves for habitation and architecture in their villages.
Background[]
According to Ainz Ooal Gown, he believes that the magic involving elf trees was developed in the Elf Country in response to the various dangerous monsters that inhabited the Great Forest of Evasha. The ground floor of the forest being inhospitable forced the elves to move to the treetops.
The trees form a central part of elven culture. Elf trees are a variant of trees that are created through the magic of elven druids. Elven druids use their magic to grow and transform trees for habitation and architecture by creating cavities inside for housing. The trees could also be shaped to have bridges between trees. When tens of those structures were bunched up together, they aggregately form an elf village. These trees provided not just shelter and furniture but weapons and armor for the elves. Elven druids use their magic to take care of the trees, such as producing water and cultivating the trees to grow branches to ward away flying monsters and to act as concealment. To elves who lived together with the elf trees, losing one was the same as having everything stolen from them.
Due to the nature of the trees, the entrances to them were located at a height that corresponded to the second of third floors of a human dwelling. On the third floor were the living areas. A typical bedroom of an elf tree is rather primitive, elves sleep on a pile of leaves and use magic to repel insects. While seemingly rough and backward, elves find the bedding to be comfortable and families often sleep together in groups.
The growth of an elf tree was unbelievably fast, but said growth of a strong tree could not be accomplished overnight. To grow big and thick elf tree, required not just having its growth accelerated by using magic but also being given vast amounts of nourishment. While the giant trees would have the sturdiness to simply repel whatever monster charged it, they can still be damaged and destroyed by powerful monsters such as an Ankyloursus Lord.
From Ainz's perspective this was a type of magic that did not exist in YGGDRASIL. This tree altering magic is apparently only exclusive to elves and only they can use their magic on elf trees. In his hypothesis, the undead believed that the elf trees were perhaps a type of monster that used the elves to multiply themselves. However it has yet to be confirmed by Ainz.
Chronology[]
The Half Elf God-kin Arc[]
- Main article: The Half Elf God-kin I and The Half Elf God-kin II Arc
Ainz Ooal Gown gained knowledge of elven culture, from the Elven Slaves and was particularly interested in the elf trees. After learning that it was a magic that even Mare Bello Fiore could not do, Ainz wanted to acquire the technique as soon as possible.[1]
While taking a “paid vacation”, Ainz was able to examine the elf trees at the elven Royal Capital at Crescent Lake. However the overall architecture or lack of structure in the capital made it all more confusing to navigate for the Sorcerer King.[2]
At the Dark Elf Village, the Ankyloursus Lord made a show of itself and single-mindedly focused its attack on the elf trees to the confusion of the rangers and villagers who coin not fathom as why the trees would elicit such aggression from the magical beast. It’s rampage was stopped after Aura Bella Fiora appeared and used her superior abilities to drive it away.
To thank her for saving the village, the elders allowed the young dark elf to stay in their village as a guest. To properly accommodate her, the best elf tree was given to her for her use to stay in.[3]
To blend in the village, Ainz took the appearance and used the name Ain Bell Fior. When he and Mare arrived in the village, three days later, he was able to witness first hand on how the elves manipulated an elf tree when one of them used their magic form a table for his wares.[4]
Later it is revealed that the elf trees of their usage are also coveted by the Slane Theocracy having conducted research into their growth to use the trees to create a new city in other locations. However it was determined that such time was not effective and opted for another plan to take an existing city made of elf trees, Part of their reason for targeting the elven capital at Crescent Lake was to conquer the capital and use it as a evacuation point for the Theocracy's civilians in the inevitable war with the Sorcerer Kingdom.[5]
Trivia[]
- Though the trees are effective at keeping most types of monsters at bay, monster types like snakes and spiders are the natural enemies of elves in the trees. Hence night guards are assigned to keep watch, but still there are casualties as these monsters have high intelligence.
- The Gigantic Tree was mistakenly assumed to be a type of mutant elf tree, by the Elven Slaves.
