Elves (森妖精) are a race of graceful forest-dwelling humanoids.

Background

Elves are amongst of the 'Humanoid Type' races of YGGDRASIL that players can use as their game avatar.[1]

Also, elves can be found in the New World and are separated into various groups based on cultural differences. As a race that is accustomed to nature, elves prefer to make their homes in the forests.

For instance, the largest known elven society found in the New World is the Elf Country. They have an average lifespan that is around a thousand years. Members of the elf royal family possessed traits of the old elves.

Types

  • Forest Elves or Wood Elves: Forest elves are the more commonly seen elves in the New World as they are known to trade and mingle with humans.
  • Dark Elves: Dark elves are cousins of the wood elves that are far more isolationist and tend to live far away from civilization.
  • Half-Elves: Half-elves are a mix of elven and human heritage.
  • Wild Elves: Elves that live in the grasslands and are very rare to encounter.

Appearance

Elves are considered very attractive, tend to be slimmer when compared to humans. In addition, they have a pair of pointy ears that are far longer than normal humans' ears.

Elves were fundamentally a slender race, shorter by about 10 to 20 percent when compared to humans. Plus they barely had any body hair and didn't grow beards, making them look like young adults for a long period of their life. As a result, it was extremely hard to estimate their age from their external appearance alone since most elves looked far younger than their real age.

Abilities

Elves are known for their longevity and proficiency in nature magic. They also possess an acute sense of hearing.[2] Due to elves growing in a more lethal environment, they had the ability to become rangers, rogues, and druids. The race possesses a long lifespan, with the oldest elf speculated to be over three hundred years old in the Elf Country. Despite having a long lifespan, elves have a lesser fertility rate than humans and were thus less populous.

In YGGDRASIL, the life expectancy for elves was a thousand years. Their growth rate in the first decade is quite fast, with elves supposedly being able to produce children once every decade. At two hundred years of age, an elf would be considered an adult. Though the period of their fertility lasts only until they are four hundred years old.

Based on Ainz Ooal Gown's assessment, elves in the New World, are more likely to be better fighters than humans and are more likely to specialize in Druid and Ranger Job professions, at least those within the Elf Country do so.

Culture

Though there is very little information of common elven culture, they do possess a ruling class known as the Royal Elf Family. In the Web Novel, the Loyal Elf was a member of the Elf Royal Family who bore the special characteristics of the ancestral elves.[3] It is unknown what these special characteristics are specifically.

In this case, the heterochromic eyes are believed to be special for elves in the New World. Several cases throughout the novels, characters from the New World express awe at this trait: Igvarge distinctly remembered an important detail about elves with heterochromic eyes, before he was killed by Mare.[4] Imina was gasping at seeing Aura's eyes. Lastly, the three captured elven slaves of Tenmu have become absolutely loyal to Aura and Mare.[5]

Later it is revealed that heterochromic eyes holds significance to the elven people, as it is a trait of royalty, as their king, Decem Hougan, and his descendants are recognized by these eyes.

Central to elf culture are the elf trees, trees that have been changed an transformed by druids to serve as not only as homes and furniture, but also for weapons and armor. Using the power of druids, elves use wooden arrowheads that are comparable to iron for hunting.

Elves do not put much investment in agriculture and have few farmers. They do have a higher proportion of people who can fight due to their hostile living conditions in the forest.

They do not seem to regard keeping track of time as important or even the prospect of thinking how long they can live. In fact some elves do not care to know their ages, as they have no concept of a birthday.

Elves diet on fruits, meats and vegetables, and cook them either by baking or boiling.[6]

Trivia

  • Imina and Antilene Heran Fouche are the only known half-elves introduced in the series.
  • It seems elven slaves are a popular commodity sold in the Slane Theocracy and is one of the main exports to the Baharuth Empire. To mark them as slaves, slavers cut the tips off the captured elf's ears.[7]
  • In the Web Novel, there was the Dark Elf Country in the west of the Slane Theocracy.
