Chaos Zone (混沌領域) or Chaos Environment (混沌環境) is an otherworldly dimension where the Chaos Beasts emerged in Mass for the Dead. It is also known as the Corridor (
Background[]
The result of a crack in reality in "this world," leading to the Chaos Zone which suddenly comes and goes.
Needless to say, it is not clear what is waiting there. Different enemies are assumed to exist there like Shadows. Their behavior is unpredictable, and the situation is left to the discretion of those guarding the Cracks.
Momonga, who is interested in this strange phenomenon, sent a team to survey this mysterious space and bring back as much useful information and resources as possible for himself and the Great Tomb of Nazarick.
In a Chaos Zone, strange shadows lurk in the background that appear vaguely humanoid.[2] Besides Chaos Beasts, there are Contaminated Beasts which are hunted by the former as well as many unconscious or dead victims that were brought from the New World. Oddly enough, these victims are ignored by the Chaos Beasts and are unmolested, as the Chaos Beasts are only attracted to prey that move within the domains of the dimension.
Though according to Gazef Stronoff's observations, he witnessed bodies that seemed partially eaten, or even swallowed whole by something in the mysterious realm.
Chronology[]
Mass for the Dead Arc[]
- Main article: Mass for the Dead Arc
During a colossal attack on the city of E-Rantel, the protagonist was among those who were taken to the Chaos Zone either through a rogue Crack or the invisible enemy. The protagonist, finding himself in a strange world, sought to escape and return to the original world. Though powerless in a world filled with aggressive monsters, he was found by Gazef Stronoff, who protected him until he reached a nearby Crack.
After crossing the threshold, he found himself in a forest a little ways from Nazarick. Upon returning to Momonga, he learned that he, along with Yuri Alpha, CZ2128 Delta, Solution Epsilon, and Slimeko, were missing for several months. Since the Sorcerer Kingdom now had a viable way to retrieve their remaining comrades, a rescue operation was prepared using new equipment.
Due to time being much slower on the "other side", the protagonist led another party a month later, composed of himself, Narberal Gamma, Lupusregina Beta, and Entoma Vasilissa Zeta and several Shadow Demons into the Crack.
There, without wasting any time, the party located each missing comrade. Gazef found the protagonist and the members of Darkness, bringing back the bodies of Ramposa III and Brain Unglaus, which he’d managed to recover. The Warrior Captain then took the bodies back through a Crack, to return them for revival. Shortly after his departure, the protagonist and his adventurer team met Enhela Read Gahi, who was searching for his own comrades: Nigun Grid Luin and Ian Als Heim.[3]
There, the members of Darkness learned from Enhela that the reason as to why the protagonist and Enhela were able to survive in the realm was due to being born from the Sea of Possibilities by their creator, the Devourer of the Nine Worlds. Enhela attempted to have the protagonist come with him to fulfill his purpose, but was driven away by the attacks of the Pleiades who were hiding.
The revelations that the protagonist was not an actual creation of the Supreme Beings, but an idea, was troubling for Nazarick, with many of the Floor Guardians agreeing that the protagonist could no longer stay in the dungeon. However, they and Momonga were unable to fully cast the protagonist out as he was still a part of the legacy of the Supreme Beings and held fond memories of him as their comrade. Ultimately, as the protagonist was now a target of Enhela, Momonga forbade the homunculus from returning, but allowed him to retain his post as Territory Guardian of E-Rantel.
There in the city, the protagonist met with Gazef Stronoff along with Enhela at a meeting of the representatives of the Quadripartite Alliance, where they shared information, omitting certain facts. Upon the news that there were still people on the other side in need of saving, a rescue operation known as the Four Kingdoms Rescue Team was organized by the factions to rescue those trapped on the other side. Part of the expedition included the members of Darkness, Blue Roses, Gazef, Brain, Nimble, Leinas, and the newly returned Ian and Nigun.
To venture safety into the Chaos Zone, the Sorcerer Kingdom provided the Chaos Adaptive Equipment, which they’d mass produced for the operation. The act earn them great admiration of the other nations, who believed they were finally taking a step in the right direction to understanding the world on the "other side" of the Crack.[4]
Unknown to the expedition, the number of people they needed to rescue was reduced significantly by Soi, who retrieved several people in order to make it appear less suspicious that Climb, who was previously captured by Nazarick, was missing among those on the "other side". A hundred people were rescued by the expedition before they were forced to retreat after encountering a giant horde of Chaos Beasts.[5]
A year after the defeat of Enhela Read Gahi, more forays into the Chaos Zone were made, conducted by various nations in the Quadripartite Alliance to rescue their citizens. Though this was only possible due to the Chaos Adaptive Equipment provided by the Sorcerer Kingdom.
Narberal Gamma and Solution Epsilon, tested a new edition of the equipment through the Crack in the Tob Forest. After training Solution noted how oddly quiet the area was, like the bottom of the ocean.
Later when Albedo and the protagonist made contact with Aggresiel and Billiophia of Mercenary Knights, Aggresiel claimed hat she was there in the Chaos Zone, when the Sorcerer Kingdom began sending people to explore. Upon spying on them, caused her to believe that they were part of the legendry guild she heard tales of, prompting her to move forward in contacting the heteromorphic nation.[1]
Around New Year's the Pleiades went to the Crack in the Tob Forest, escorting Yuri and Narberal there while offering invites to the forest dwellers to the holiday banquet. Yuri and Narberal conducted a test of the Chaos Adaptive Equipment. While scouting the area inside the dimension, the two noted how quiet it was as they talked. Later after the banquet the two returned for another visit to the Chaos Zone.[6]
Later in a discussion in Nazarick over the Mercenary Knights' intel about the interior of the Crack, which they called the Womb Corridors, it revealed many new details. The reference to "womb" was in association to referring the realm being the place where the knights were born. The protagonist believed that the Womb Corridors presented a new frontier for the Sorcerer Kingdom to explore and to see if travel to other worlds was truly possible as claimed by the knights.
Another discovery was later made with the Mimic, by members of Nazarick who were testing out the Chaos Adaptive Equipment. A possible monster break out was prevented by the guards at the Tob Forest, killing the Mimics that managed to escape out of the Crack. Still there were concerns whether the Mimics were the work of the Mercenary Knights.
In the second meeting between the representatives of the Sorcerer Kingdom and Mercenary Knights, the Sorcerer Kingdom revealed their hand by showing Lupusregina Beta and CZ were working as undercover agents to Aggresiel and Billiophia. Aggresiel was noted to recognize CZ having been among those that were taken inside the Womb Corridor due to the machinations of Enhela. Although the knights admitted that they did not try to save the victims them in fear of catching the attention of Enhela. They were glad to hear that all members of Nazarick had been rescued and that those who remained were only the unfortunate humans caught in the incident.
They revealed some details of how the Calamity was caused in the New World. From their observations while inside of the Womb Corridor for a long period of time, they stated that such a disastrous phenomena like that does happen, although the scale varies. Even so, the one in E-Rantel was unusually large in scale. It seem that when more beings pass through the Corridor, it causes the anomaly to begin to distort, trying stabilize itself. But it eventually begins to grow, and akin it to like a "fetal movement." When this happens, a situation like the Mimic occurs. In player terms, defragmentation or the output of input. Simply put the Womb Corridor somehow was duplicating intruders using the information of the humans that were abducted. For the reason it was uncertain, but there was doubts on whether there was any malice or malicious intent.[7]
Layout[]

The Chaos Zone as it manifest to a person.
The Chaos Zone manifests as a crack in reality leading to a void-like dimension filled with purple-blue fog where many monsters lurk. On the "other side", the appearance of the dimension makes it appear no different from the locations of the New World. As it contains locations containing soil and trees, however nothing is what is appears as the forests are devoid of animal life. There are ruins and yet no signs of actual civilization. Also the place appears to be without any wind, and without any Chaos Beasts in the area, the surroundings can be eerily quiet,
According to the protagonist who was trapped there for a time, the Chaos Zone normally has no distinction between top, bottom, left, and right. In fact, the current appearance of a location may simply just one of the “shapes” people can recognize based on the many “possibilities” that exist there. From the perception of Solution Epsilon, who traveled through different Cracks into the zone, most had different landscapes that she seen before, but oddly were all strangely connected.[1]
Additionally, the movements of the celestial bodies that appear in the sky differ from the normal sky, as it could appear night in the "other side" while day in the New World. Time also moves quite differently, and though the exact difference is unknown, it seems that on the "other side" where a single day can be spent, months in the New World would pass.
Activity in the zone is extremely limited to those not native to the world. Once visitors are in the zone, they fall unconscious. This phenomena is termed the "chaos environment", and it affects not just living beings, but even non-living beings such as automatons and undead. Under the adverse effects of the world, no one, save for Chaos Beasts and Contaminated Beasts, are able to function. Those not native to the realm undergo a form of suspended animation and will remain unharmed and unaged until they are removed from the area. The reason by the monster ignore these victims is due to the environmental effects of the zone, in which time-stops for the victims, thus rendering them invisible to hostile creatures of the interior of the Crack.
According to Billiophia, the Chaos Zone or Corridor could be described as a branch that connects to a trunk where a few worlds exist. Where all worlds are similar...but with some differences. Such as a world that has ended and a world that is about to begin.
The zone serves as a special event zone and periodic occurs in the game at designated times:

Trivia[]
- The Chaos Zone allows players in the game to acquire point rewards and ranking rewards by accumulating event points that can be earned by completing quests.
- In a special game event, the Takemikazuchi Shrine was created within specialized Chaos Zone.[18]
- In a chapter of the main story of the game, the visual of the Chaos Zone was reused as the setting for the world created by Depiction of Nature and Society.[19]
- Besides Chaos Beasts and Contaminated Beasts, there are three ways to move in the Chaos Zone without any ill effect:
- One is by wearing adaptive equipment like those made by the Sorcerer Kingdom using Chaos Stones. However the equipment must be constantly replaced, or the user will succumbed to the effects of the world.
- Second is to be infected by the miasma and turn into a Contaminated Beast and then detoxified which allows a user to develop an immunity to the environment.
- And lasty, as shown by Enhela Read Gahi, who claims that it is due to being a God-kin apparently grants one a natural immunity. Though his affiliation of being a God-kin is more related to being a creation of the Sea of Possibilities as is the protagonist.
- To fool Gazef and explain how the protagonist was present in E-Rantel, actually a doppelgänger, and in the Chaos Zone, where the real one was trapped; the protagonist lied by saying that he was sent into the past after he left the realm to the point when the disaster that struck E-Rantel with multiple Cracks appeared and blamed it on "time paradox".
