Broken Towers are the seven Broken Towers that are scattered throughout the Katze Plains.
Background[]
The Broken Towers are collapsed structures that scattered all over the vast Katz Plains. A total of seven confirmed Broken Towers exist in the plains. According to the distance from the Free City of Vadis, they are marked from 1 to 7 as landmarks.
In the past the inhabitants of the Free City, converted these towers to be used as shelters for emergencies. The people had them reinforced them so that they could be used for exploring the plains.
Chronology[]
The Phantom Ship of Katze Plains Arc[]
- Main article: The Phantom Ship of Katze Plains I and The Phantom Ship of Katze Plains II Arc
The worker team of Fist headed out from Vadis, accompanied by a supervisor and four porters to conduct a rountine undead subjugation of the Katze Plains. Their first stop of undead clean up was planned to be Broken Tower 1.[1]
Upon arriving just outside the tower, the workers noticed that no flag was raise, which normally would signify that the tower was empty. However Antwali decided to make sure everything was safe. Though Candelon Gaelian detected no undead presences, Bunaz used a potion to enhance his sense of smell, detected a faint hint of blood. This prompted Envario to use his magic to call forth a wolf summon which confirmed that the scent of blood was coming from the tower.
The wolf summon was sent to check out the status of the tower, when it came back, it brought a tattered piece of clothing of imperia design. From the cloth, the workers deduced that whatever caused the damage was not by a sword by in fact something big with claws and teeth. The team had not heard any news of any large undead creatures near the tower.
Furthermore Fist was aware that two teams were supposed to have come by the Broke Tower before them, and none were incompetent to allow the undead to get the better of them. It thus painted a picture that the teams may have been chased from the depths of the plains by powerful undead to the Broken Tower where they died of their injuries. Given that Envario's wolf came back unharmed the undead must have left the area.
Despite the lack of information and the danger of the strong undead being nearby, the workers could not just leave the bodies in the tower as the corpses could turn into the undead. So it decided hat they would enter the tower to bury and hold a funeral for the fallen. Afterwards they would then return to Vadis and report the incident. The team examined the scene at the tower and found evidence that whatever attacked the previous teams, was probably a large flying undead. Based on the evidence the workers came to the conclusion that culprit was a Skeletal Dragon.
Just as the workers were busying burying the bodies of the slain and talking about the adamantite adventurer Momon, a Skeletal Dragon appeared from the sky and attacked the group. The workers having been taken by surprised due to failing to detect the undead's approached prepared to fight. Fist managed to hold back the undead dragon, though their situation turned dire when two more Skeletal Dragons appeared from the fog cutting off their escape and giving the workers the only option but to hole up at the tower.
Before the trio of undead could kill the party, they were distracted by the approach of something in the fog. It was later revealed to be Hamsuke being ridden by Momon and Nabe.[2] Though one of the dragons managed to knock Momon off Hamsuke, the warrior was back on his feet and ordered Hamsuke to handle one of the undead whilst he took care of the other two of them.
Nabe staying at the sidelines, watched as Momon using his improvised "Martial Arts" eliminated the two undead dragons, whilst his mount Hamsuke used her tail to batter her foe until it broke apart.
The workers of Fist then thanks the adventurers of Darkness for rescuing them. The two teams shared information on their presences in the Katze Plains, Fist having heard that Momon was sent by Prime Minister Albedo to confirm the rumors of the Ghost Ship of the Katze Plains thought it was a fool's errand, but they respected Momon's mission to head out to the next Broken Tower. They on the other hand with their porters and the Inspector would be returning to Vadis.
After the undead subjugation bid their farewells, Momon, Nabe and Hamsuke dropped their adventurer facades and retreated to the Broken Tower 1 to plot their next move.[3] Inside the Broken Tower both Narberal and Hamsuke confirmed no one was spying on them. Hamsuke was sent outside to maintain a lookout while he and Narberal stayed inside to pass the time. Ainz took the time to read a book he selected, though seeing Narberal decided to strike up a conversation on her hobbies and that of the other Pleaides. The conversation was brief before Narberal joined Hamsuke outside and together enjoyed gazing at the sky.
When Ainz finished reading two of his books, he alerted his subordinates that they would move onto the next phase of his plan to search for the alleged Ghost Ship. Ainz then casted [Gate] to bring forth several elder liches to do an aerial search of the plains. Several hours passed, when one of the elder liches reported in finding a undead crab wandering the plains. The information was taken in with curiosity by Ainz who planned to address it later. Shortly afterwards, AInz received news that one of the liches located the Ghost Ship. Ainz and Narberal then headed to the location, via teleportation magic, leaving behind Hamsuke with the lich who discovered the ship.[4]
Layout[]
Overall the Broken Towers are collapsed from the middle, and probably was quite tall when they were in pristine condition. A lot of debris was scattered all around, with stones as tall as a person stuck in the ground looking like tombstones.
The Broken Towers having been converted by the undead subjugation parties, has sufficient food stored inside. In order provide a haven and a defense, a sturdy gate has been well maintained. Not only that, in order to prevent further collapse, measures such as reinforcement have been taken seriously.
A Broken Tower is surrounded by a simple fence made of wood, but could be called a wall, with gaps that were deliberately left open for people to squeeze in. Because it is not completely fenced off, it cannot prevent small undead incursions. After all, if it is completely sealed off, it will be impossible to confirm whether the fenced area had been invaded from the outside, and it would be dangerous to be attacked suddenly. Though the wood used to build the wall is not very thick, so it is not that difficult to destroy it.
Other things to strengthen the tower's defense are several erected wooden sticks with cloth hanging at the tips around the ground. People who use the tower as a base are very familiar with the features as they are markers for pit holes to serve as traps. While some people will definitely doubt the traps function, it is simple enough to deal with undead with low intelligence.
Though there is a history of the living having fallen into the trap when escaping during the fear and chaos as a result of special abilities of some undead. Thankfully there is no mechanism like sharp wooden stakes buried under the traps, but are still very useful when being chased or surrounded by the undead.
Additionally the Broken Tower has a mechanism that raises flags from the inside. There are two types of flags. One is a flag used to inform that someone is using the Broken Tower to avoid being mistaken for undead. This helps to avoid tragedies caused by chaos at night when visibility is poor, or in extreme situations where the undead are pursuing people. The second flag is to inform that there are powerful undead nearby, so they are defending. When no flag is raised, it means that no one is there, and it also means that there is no guarantee that there are undead nearby that have not been eliminated.
- Broken Tower 1: The Broken Tower that was closet to Vadis and usually the first stop for warriors when exploring the plains, and to be cleared of the undead and used as a safe zone. Since the area around it was frequently a location of undead subjugation activity, it was believed powerful undead would not appear. After the attack by the Skeletal Dragons, the defenses of the Broken Tower, suffered damage, in that on its south side, part of the wall was destroyed.
- Broken Towers 4-7: The more further Broken Towers, which would require the cooperation of several teams of workers and adventurers to form a larger team to explore.
Trivia[]
- The identity of which country who built the Broken Towers is unknown. Since there are no no other buildings around, some wonder why the structures were even built. The same goes for why the towers collapsed and were left in ruins.
- The Broken Towers also are equipped with digging equipment for burials.
