Billiophia (ビリオフィア) is a mysterious new character in Mass for the Dead and a member of the Mercenary Knights.
Appearance[]
A tall slim woman with a pale complexion and dull blue eyes. She has purple hair with streak of white hair in the front. Her attire is a white outer coat and trousers. Said coat appears to have gold epaulettes on the shoulders and ending trims of the shoulder flaps. Underneath she wears a blue inner coat with a black vest suit with two belts across her stomach. Her left arm is equipped with a greave with a sharp daggers on each finger digit. Atop her head is a hat with goggles strapped at the the front.
Personality[]
Billiophia has a reserved attitude, always appear to be reading from the book she carries in her right hand whilst seemingly ignoring the world around her. Though this is only a superficial perception of of her personality. The woman is more organized in her thoughts compared to her older sister, allowing priorities to be established. She is also more thoughtful of social situations and norms and matters of perception. And while Billiophia is somewhat elusive, she has a respectful attitude. Though she admits her cold attitude is a result of having traveled to so many worlds and seeing so many horrible things.
Despite her calm facade, regarding the topic of Ainz Ooal Gown, Billiophia reveals that like her sister she is also a fan of the guild, and gets excited when faced with evidence of its survival.
Background[]
Little is known about Billiophia, save that she lives with five other girls who she considers as her sisters: Aggresiel, a twin pig-tailed girl, a spear-wielding girl, a wheelchair bound girl and a lethargic girl that is seen sleeping on a pile of some unknown objects. Which together they make up the group called the Mercenary Knights.
Though later it is revealed that she is a creation of someone from YGGDRASIL who was a long-time admirer of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown who recorded their mighty deeds in a series of documents. At one point she and her sisters came in possession of the documents, about the heteromorphic guild. These tales greatly made an impression on the Mercenary Knights, which Billiophia always kept with her his a small book she carried.
She and her sisters operate "inside the Crack", traveling to various worlds, taking on different roles and identities, where they are Mercenary Knights, in another workers, etc. However after seeing so much cruelty and horrible situations, before long it made her numb. The current world which her sisters are in is one where there is a minimal presence of the Chaos Beasts, at least compared to the New World.
Chronology[]
Mass for the Dead Arc[]
- Main article: Mass for the Dead Arc
While resting at the home shared with her other sisters, Billiophia and the others saw Aggresiel barge into the domicile, with exciting news. Billiophia though quickly deduced that it was probably about Enhela meeting his death. Upon learning of this, her other sisters were jubilate. With the priest gone, Billiophia saw that the uncertain threat he represented was gone.
Aggresiel then proposed in finally making the move to contact the great guild. After Di threw in her support along with the other sisters, Billiophia went along with the vote. Aggresiel despite having just returned wanted to start right away, which Billiophia obliged to expedite. The two then left to make preparations for contact, with Billiophia telling Di and the others take care of things while they were away.[1]
Billiophia and Aggresiel made their way to the Baharuth Empire, finding themselves in Arwintar. Though they lacked money and were getting hungry and attempted to find work. They managed to meet with the merchant Osk, and pleaded to for him to hire them as fighters at the Grand Arena, claiming themselves to be bounty hunters. Although the merchant was doubtful of them, his aide, Headhunter Rabbit convinced him otherwise.
Aggresiel and her sister were set to fight on the last day of Go Gin's comeback training matches. They were to have a friendly match against two members from Silver Thread Bird: Freivalds and Fan Long. Billiophia and her sister were regarded as newcomers, but they surprised the crowd with their physical strength and skill and won the match. After the match the woman kept silent as Aggresiel chatted with the adventurers. The two later picked up their payment from Osk and the promptly left the arena.
Their next destination turned out to be the Singing Apple Pavilion where they ate with some workers. At the end of the meal they headed to the lodging facility prepared by the Empire for the representatives of the Sorcerer Kingdom. Their approach was noticed by the Shadow Demons lurking about. However, Billiophia and Aggresiel shocked the demons, when they addressed them directly, displaying that the women could perceive them despite their abilities of stealth. Her sister demanded an audience with Prime Minister Albedo. The Shadow Demons seeing that the pair were unfazed, got clarification from their mistress on how to proceed, permitted the women to pass into the room where the Overseer Guardian and the protagonist were waiting.
During the initial meetings with the representatives of the Sorcerer Kingdom, Billiophia stayed mostly out of the conversation, content with reading her book, only interjecting to remind her older sister to stay on track, stop acting weird and casting suspicion on them from the other party. She even had to reign in Aggresiel's enthusiasm at meeting the Prime Minister and apologizing for her behavior. And when she noticed that the demon was studying Aggresiel's leg armor. Seeing this was a distraction she openly chastised Aggresiel for not taking them off beforehand, only to be told by her sibling that it was impossible.
As the conversation went on, with Aggresiel revealing that they had been watching the Sorcerer Kingdom, Billiophoa could see that the other party were starting to see them as spies and that the meeting was not going well.
After Aggresiel got to the point that she and her sister in the Mercenary Knights were born from the Sea of Possibilities just like the protagonist, Billiophia clarified that they did not actively spy on the Sorcerer Kingdom. The Sorcerer Kingdom was sending teams into the Chaos Zone which Billiophia and her sisters referred as a garden to them and had watched their forces operate in the realm. In fact according to the clawed woman it all started when a large number of humans were sent there. The Mercenary Knights were just investigating the circumstances and wondering if they would suffer any consequences.
However the team found that it was a similar being to them, Enhela who was responsible. And later when the people of the Sorcerer Kingdom began their rescue efforts around the time that the priest fellow disappeared they also learned about the protagonist.
To answer Albedo and the protagonist's questions on where she and Aggresiel came from, Billiophia elaborated that they came from another world on the other side of the Crack, explaining that the Chaos Zone or the Corridor was akin to a branch on a trunk which they used to travel to other worlds. Where all worlds are similar...but with some differences. Such as a world that has ended and a world that is about to begin.
It was then Aggresiel got to the main topic of why the Mercenary Knights approached the Sorcerer Kingdom. The world which the Mercenary Knight resided was being invaded by Chaos Beasts and the group wanted the aid of the Sorcerer Kingdom. As an incentive for a cooperative arrangement, Billiophia offered the Sorcerer Kingdom access their world's knowledge and the technology which they nation lacked, with the goal of turning the unknown into the unknown.
When Aggresiel showed her sincerity by smiling, Billiophia warned her that the sharp toothy grin was off-putting the other party. The Sorcerer Kingdom delegation was still not sure, but were curious to know why Aggresiel and Billiophia kept associating their organization with a certain guild that they admired.
After her leader explained that the were brought up with the tales of the guild from a document they have in their possession. The vice-leader of the Mercenary Knights adds that when Aggresiel saw the Sorcerer Kingdom's agents active within the Crack, she started saying that they might be members of the legendary heteromorphic guild that they know of, although, she was aware that her sister did not actually have any proof, but relied on her intuition.
To give them proof, Billiophia was asked by Aggresiel to provide it. That being said the woman took out her book and began reciting a series a series of facts about the guild, such as managing to defeat a punitive force of 1,500 people, was a guild made up of only heteromorphic species like the author, fought off against righteous hunters of other races, had a World Champion and World Disaster within their ranks, and was called Ainz Ooal Gown and was led by a guildmaster named Momonga.
The facts stunned Albedo and the protagonist to silence and their skepticism vanishing, more so when Billiophia added that these words were about a place called YGGDRASIL which was a real place and were written by the Mercenary Knights' creator who was a long-time admirer of the guild of Ainz Ooal Gown. While there were some lingering traces of uncertainty on the faces on Albedo, both Aggresiel and Billiophia assured the Prime Minister that their secret was safe with them and that they were not enemies. Billiophia stated that being an enemy of the associates of Ainz Ooal Gown was not their intent as the Mercenary Knights understood they would not survive even if they cross the world. All they ask was a relationship and their patronage.[2]
In the discussion with Albedo and the protagonist, Billiophis and Aggresiel revealed many things, one being that things were getting turbulent inside the Crack and thus warned them and the Sorcerer Kingdom to be on guard.
The members of the Mercenary Knights apparently left afterwards, and Albedo and the protagonist passed their message to Momonga and the rest of Nazarick.[3]
A second meeting between the Mercenary Knights and the representatives occurred, this time at the Singing Apple Pavilion. When the Sorcerer Kingdom representatives, composed of the protagonist, Doppel-Slimeko, and Shall, asked for the choice of venue, Billiophia explained that it was due to the inn being suitable for having a private conversation with clients. Since their conversation was extremely sensitive, the sisters agreed to bring the members of the Sorcerer Kingdom to a more discrete location. Upon seeing the other party's hesitation, Billiophia assured them that they were not walking into a trap but she and Aggresiel merely were taking them to the inn room which the sisters were quartering.
On the way to their quarters, Billiophia chatted with the merchants in the Central Market, who they had become friendly with during their stay in Arwintar. Seeing the protagonist and his questioning looks on their camaraderie with the locals, Billiophia explained that it was normal as it was part of their role in gathering intel in an unfamiliar setting. That their interactions were mainly to not only gather information but prevent misunderstandings.
The meeting place soon to be a somewhat cheap inn room. Billiophia stated that she selected the place because she prioritized the condition of an unpopular corner room. As said room next door was a warehouse, and the room across the street is vacant. Thus it was the perfect place to have a secret conversation. Although they had the option of rooming in a better place with their employer, Billiophia explained that they did not want to rely on Osk too much. Additionally they did not want to attract to much attention by making money in the arena. If newbies like them kept winning, it would incur resentment and by standing out, they'll just get into trouble.
Later when Shall was introduced by the protagonist, neither Billiophia nor Aggresiel recognized her, with the latter thinking the girl was a princess of some sort. To help clarify things, Shall dropped her cover revealing herself as Shalltear Bloodfallen. Although Billiophia suspected Shalltear's former appearance was a disguise, she still did not know who Shalltear was and neither did her sister. Only when Shalltear revealed herself to be a Floor Guardian of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, did the Mercenary Knight take her seriously. By Shalltear's words, Billiophia dropped her calm facade becoming excited, as it inferred that the Great Tomb of Nazarick, a dungeon that once repelled a punitive force of 1,500 people was still in existence.
After being told by the protagonist that Nazarick still existed and was operating under the name of the Sorcerer Kingdom, Billiophia understood the matter of discretion as humans would probably panic or even not understand. The news of Nazarick's survivable still proved to Billiophia and her sister that their words of their creators in his book were true.
The members of the Sorcerer Kingdom still wanted to know how much the sisters knew about Nazarick and Ainz Oowl Gown. With approval from Aggresiel, Billiophia revealed that the book did not contain any information on Nazarick's interior, only that it was located in a swamp in Helheim and the members of Ainz Ooal Gown were good at PKK. Though Billiophia admitted she had no idea what the term PKK meant, until the protagonist told her it was a term for "Player Killer Killer". Though the information was unsettling seeing that killing a creator would be very unpopular.
As the dialogue between the two groups continued, Billiophia felt humbled as while she did not know much about Nazarick, she always felt attracted to that place due to some mysticism. Aggresiel desire to see it for herself, though Billiophia chided for being too greedy. With Shalltear's presence at the meeting, Billiophia surmised that the Floor Guardian came to inspect them, given she is in charge of guarding the dungeon from intruders.
The questioning continued on the topic of if there was information on the members of Ainz Ooal Gown. To which Billiophia revealed that the names in her book included a powerful magic caster and leader of the guild, Momonga, the World Champion Touch Me, and World Disaster Ulbert who her creator had deep admiration for. When Shalltear asked if there was any mention of her creator, Peroroncino, in the book Billiophia carried. The knight admitted she did not recognize the name, despite the uniqueness. After Shalltear asked her to look up on anything related to someone with a bow, Billiophia' did find something. There was no direct reference to that person, but an anecdotal mention of a PK who was targeting monsters and being killed in an unknown manner. The attack took place in Helheim though, but Shalltear was unsure, even though the attack sounded like it was for long range. Billiophia promised to do more research into the topic.
Since there were only three actual members of Ainz Ooal Gown mentioned, another question arose on if the sisters knew anything about World Items. From that Billiophia quoted from her book on chapters regarding World Items her creator written, who stated that there were 200 of these items and that Ainz Ooal Gown collected a few, adding to their prestige as a guild. The sisters have never seen such items only that they exist. As for when the protagonist asked them if they knew anything about a World Item that can exert mental control over an opponent who is immune to mental effects, Billiophia was surprised at this having thought World Items were all solely for combat.
Another shock occurred for Billiophia and her sister was when they were told one of the members of Ainz Ooal Gown was still alive, Momonga. Both she and Aggresiel had though the idea to be just a rumor, but were stupefied that a creator still remained in Nazarick. This explained to Billiophia on why the Sorcerer Kingdom was so wary of the Mercenary Knights. To Billiophia it was even more surprising that the Kingdom would allow the protagonist to remain under their umbrella despite knowing what he is.
The sisters though expressed that they looked forward in working with the Sorcerer Kingdom. The talks ended with both groups enjoying a modest teatime, with the protagonist offering the sisters Chocolate Drinks.
Eventually the Sorcerer Kingdom representatives called in Regi and Shizuni to the location, revealing them to be agents of the Sorcerer Kingdom as a show of trust. Aggresiel immediately recognized Shizu (CZ) when she was stranded in the Womb Corridor Sea of Possibilities. The conversation revealed that the sisters were aware of the people who were trapped in the other dimension, however they refrained from doing so or even participating in the rescue operations. Billiophia informed everyone that she was the one who stopped her sisters as doing so would have gained the attention of Enhela from the Theocracy.
After hearing that all the members of the Sorcerer Kingdom were safe, having been rescued previously, Billiophia expressed relief as there were only humans now still trapped in the Chaos Zone. Billiophia and Aggresiel talked to the two undercover workers, Lupusregina and CZ, learning that they were working for Zero as members of New Six Arms and it was them who passed information to the Sorcerer Kingdom on the sisters activities in the imperial capital.
The topic then turned to the other world which the sisters came from. Billiophia then explained that Womb Corridors they used were like branches that connected to different worlds. And while she doesn't know how many worlds there are in total, each world is similar, but also a little different. Based on her description it sounded like the concept of parallel worlds which was a novel idea to the knight.
The sisters then explained their life in traveling to other worlds, with Billiophia adding that money was a problem for them, as the currency from one world and used in another world was suspected to be counterfeit thus leading to the sisters in avoid using previous world currency.
The sister were then told about the Mimics that the protagonist encountered in the Chaos Zone. Hearing that the Sorcerer Kingdom suspected them to be involved, Billiophia protested that they had nothing to do with the creatures. Though that was then, as currently the sisters were told that Momonga wished to have a friendly exchange. This was humbling to Billiophia. In regards to the Mimics, Shalltear asked if the Mimics were the result of someone using previous victims who were abducted into the Crack and copying their forms. Billiophia honestly did not know if there was any malicious intent in the Womb Corridor. An idea was proposed that maybe the humans were absorbed in some way by in the Womb Corridor, the sisters had no idea as this was the first time where people were rescued in this fashion.
Billiophia considered the phenomena to be intriguing, though suggested that the answers laid in the Crack which spawned the Mimics in the Great Forest of Tob. With the threat of the Mimics, it was determined that E-Rantel would be targeted. Plans were made to have the sisters and the protagonist and Doppel-Slimeko take them to E-Rantel.
When a question was raised by Lupusregina in that since Billiophia and Aggresiel could use the Cracks to remotely travel, then why did they not do so for E-Rantel? Only to be told that security around the Cracks in E-Rantel was took tight and that the sisters did not usually use Womb Corridors that were unfamiliar,
Just as the groups were going, Headhunter Rabbit caught up to Billiophia and Aggresiel requesting them to fill in for a match against a Skeletal Dragon as the previous fighters chickened out. But since sisters had an engagement already, Regi and Shizuni offered to take the job, to further their goal in promoting New Six Arms.
On the way to E-Rantel via peryton, the group stopped at the Tob Forest. While resting Billiophia noticed something in the forest but assumed it was just the Crack she detected. Later she and Aggresiel took in the sight of the ruins of Carne Village, finding it a pity that it was destroyed due to be close to a Crack. However they resolved themselves to solving the issue with the Mimics as soon as possible to prevent as similar disaster.[4]
Billiophia and her sister were shown around E-Rantel, introduced as rivals that Shall made on her travels. All was well until Aggresiel saw Nigun Grid Luin, who they knew of, having met an alternate version of him in another world. Due to Aggresiel holding a grudge, Billiophia was the one to restrain her sister's temper and from doing anything foolish. Luckily the sisters tensions towards Nigun were passed of being quirks of their personality.
Later after meeting with Guildmaster Pluton Ainzach, they were introduced as being people not related to the Sorcerer Kingdom, and present to help with the threat of the Mimics. During the tour of the city, the sisters encountered both Saint Clementine and Nemu Emmot, showing some familiarity to the two humans. And later they were present when a mass of Mimics resembling powerful warriors of the Quadripartite Alliance tried to break through the undead security blockade around one of the Cracks in the streets.
Billiophia and Aggresiel then accompanied the protagonist, Shall and Soi into the Crack or Womb Corridor under the pretense of testing the new Chaos Adaptive Equipment and locating where the Mimics originated. Billiophia acted as a navigator for the group to avoid anomalies in the realm that would tangle them in disrupted time. The sisters then revealed that the source of the Mimics was actually from a wish-making mineral called Remnant that could be mined from debris coming from an entity they referred to as "Mother", the Devourer of the Nine Worlds.
At the end of the day the representatives of the Mercenary Knights and agents of Nazarick sat down in a secured mansion to hash out a possible cooperative relationship. The existence of Remnant partly played a role in convincing the protagonist and the Sorcerer King to reconsider a hostile stance, especially if they could secure mining rights of the mineral from the Knights own dimension. As for the Remnant that was acquired Billiophia insisted that the item be taken by her and Aggresiel, since they had a younger sibling who was expecting the item. For now the two groups agreed that they would trust each other for the time being.[5]
Abilities and Powers[]
Billiophia's true power is unknown, but she is shown to be physically strong enough to defeat an adamantite adventurer. Being a creation from the Sea of Possibilities, Billiophia is able to 'sense' others of the same ilk. Additionally unique to her she is able to perceive areas in the Womb Corridor where time flows fast or slowly, allowing her to safely navigate the realm.
