Battle of Kalinsha was the second large-scale battle in the Roble Holy Kingdom by the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth and his Demi-Human Alliance. It is a part of the battles consisting of the Siege of the Northern Holy Kingdom, which single-handedly brought forth the demise of the Roble Holy Kingdom under the hands of the Sorcerer Kingdom and the Great Tomb of Nazarick.
Background[]
Upon news of the fall of the Great Wall, while the demi-humans were focusing on destroying the remaining fortifications, Queen Calca Bessarez issued a general mobilization to the entire nation. Since the Roble Holy Kingdom's territory was stretch around the northern and southern edges of a central bay, the Northern Holy Kingdom Army and the Southern Holy Kingdom Army were formed. The Northern Holy Kingdom Army move towards to the city of Kalinsha to reinforce the north while its southern counterpart went to Debone. After a few days, news from the Holy Kingdom's troops reported that from the observations of the remains of the Great Wall, it was indicated that the Demi-Human Alliance was moving west and would reach Kalinsha in a few days. To further strengthen the city's forces, the queen also conscripted the nation's Adventurer's Guild despite its protest on the order.
The queen and her advisors had expected the attack to come to Kalinsha. They anticipated that the demi-humans would encircle the city, but with Kalinsha possessing ample shelters and food stores, the forces of the Holy Kingdom were prepared to fight a defensive siege. Despite the risk of the siege possibly wreaking morale, the plan was to hold out until reinforcements from the south arrive.
In actuality, the Holy Kingdom army was given false intel by Jaldabaoth, and the Demi-Human Alliance reached Kalinsha almost immediately.
Battle[]
The attack on the city was launched unexpectedly when the Demon Emperor mysteriously appeared within the walls of the Kalinsha. Once Jaldabaoth made his presence known, the demon began destroying the city with his demonic minions. The city now under threat, its defenders rang the bells of the city to alert the populace and the queen of the emergency. To make matters worse, the troops of the Kingdom realized that the demi-human army somehow managed to feed false information on the speed of its deployment and approach the city with ease and deceive its sentries. With all hopes for a simple defensive siege gone, Queen Calca rallied her allies to engage the Demon Emperor in order to stall him so that her army could engage the demi-human army.
Out in the streets of the city, Remedios Custodio led the Paladin Order and priests to combat the demons, not only slaying those in their path but also healing the wounded. Later at a plaza several scouts discovered the Demon Emperor location, while many were wiped out they managed to report the discovery to their superiors. The people in the area had been evacuated and all that was left to do was to have the paladins and adventurers reinforce the area. Remedios ordered her men to make their final checks and hoist the kingdom's banner to signal other elute paladins that she was in the area. Since Jaldabaoth was reported to possess an area-attack ability that could bring down a wall, the operation to fight the demon head on involved four groups that would converge on the area: Queen Calca and her personal guard, Kelart Custodio and her priests from the temple, high ranking adventurers, and a squad of Remedios's elite paladins. Around three hundred paladins were standing watch at the city walls against the advancing demi-humans.
Jaldbaoth stood waiting for them at the center of the plaza, that was painted bright red and strewn with bodies of the fallen. Remedios was the first to engage the demon and charged at his with Safarlisia but the Demon Emperor effortlessly evaded her attacks. Seeing her sword swings useless, Remedios's instinct warned her that the demon was dangerous and called to her men to fall back and form a cordon around the area. The paladins were soon joined by Kelart and Queen Calca, both advised by Remedios to start pulling back their forces. The queen with Remedios protecting her and Kelart, directed her attention to the Demon Emperor. Despite her friend's warning not to engage in a dialogue with the demon, Calca pressed on to converse with Jaldabaoth. After some insistence from the queen and her sister, Remedios remained silent in the exchange, resisting her bloodlust to slay the non-human. Calca attempted to gain some information from the demon, like his motives for attacking the Roble Holy Kingdom and his reasons for personally attacking the city. Under the belief that perhaps Jaldabaoth wanted a parley, she was proven wrong when the demon stated that there would be n such. His two purposes for coming into the city of Kalinsha was first merely to deepen the humans' despair and secondly to avoid making the same mistake he made in the Re-Estize Kingdom. The Demon Emperor claimed that he wanted to make sure that there was not a powerful warrior in the city like they one who drove him in the Kingdom. After Jaldabaoth did his rampage in the city he was fairly confident that such fear were unneeded which insulted Remedios.
Calca having heard all that she needed to know gave the order to the summoned five Archangels Flame, twenty Angel Guardians and single Principality Peace at the perimeter of the plaza to attack. Seeing that she had no reason to hold back, Remedios activated a skill from her job class Evil Slayer causing the divine power within her holy sword to intensify. Additionally five adventurers appeared behind Jaldabaoth, having used [Invisibility] to sneak up on him. Just as the adventurers weapons could reach him, the demon sprouted a set of wings that impaled them. Remedios who slashed down diagonally with her sword found the attack missed as the demon stepped away at the rough moment. Jaldabaoth threw the skewered bodies of the adventurers at Remedios who charged through beating them away to get to the demon. Using a combination of the Martial Art "Flow Acceleration" and [Holy Strike] the paladin attempted to aim for Jaldabaoth's throat, but the attack was blocked by a set of claws that the demon sprouted. The angels took the opportunity to jam themselves in between Remedios and Jaldabaoth after they separated from their clash. Kelart tried to aim a divine spell [Penetrate Magic - Holy Ray] at the demon's face, but it was deflected. Calca also joined her in the attack to pierce through Jaldabaoth's spell immunity but her spell was just as ineffective as her friend's. Remedios readied for another clash but was called back to allow the angels to handle the demon.
Perfectly composed, Jaldabaoth remained in his current position as the angels rushed at him from above to tackle him. The demon then went on the offensive, and with a single swipe of his claws eliminated several angels. More angels from the rear continued the attack in place of their fallen fellows. Remedios thinking that the demon was occupied move subtly to step into Jaldabaoth's defense and attack him. The demon was hit by a skill and then by her Martial Arts, and faked flying back and crashing into a nearby store on the other side of the plaza. Thinking the demon was defeated, Remedios's allies momentarily celebrate however the paladin suspected something was off as she did not expect him to have flown so far from her blow. Remedios ordered that the house be demolished remotely which the surrounding priests complied, casting attack spells until it collapsed.
After it was done, Remedios and her allies wondered why the demon had yet to come out and suspected he may have escaped. A suggestion was made by the paladin to pour oil on the area and ignite and to begin the Ritual of Holy Fire, believing it would be effective since he was a demon. Due to time constraints, Calca believed that a simplified version should be done rather than the full version. However before they could commit their plans, Demiurge summoned an Evil Lord Wrath and switched places with it, and used the summoned demon as a proxy to fight in his place for the rest of the siege. Jaldabaoth's voice emerged from the debris, stating it was time he got serious, and in its place a much, more menacing-looking demon wreathed in fire appeared from the building and claimed that he was the Demon Emperor's "True Form". Remedios taking the challenge, then ordered her friends to fall back and positioned the resummoned angels to form a wall along the path between the defenders and the demon. The Captain of the Paladin order gave the command to the priests to order their angels to attack. The demon did not bother to attack the angels and allowed them to swing at him with their weapons, taking the blows in silence. The blows from the angels did nothing towards the Evil Lord. To show them his true power, Jaldabaoth proceeded to launch a punch at an extraordinary speed that caused the entire wall of angels to be exterminated before making a beeline towards Calca.
Remedios then attacked the empowered demon with her sword to prevent demon from reaching the Holy Queen, but the blow merely bounced off his body. Seeing her as a pest, the demon brushed her aside. Remedios's pride was destroyed gradually as she continued to fruitlessly attack the demon. The priests and paladins joined her, but the demon was unfazed and walked through the blows nonchalantly, on occasion burning those with his flames that coiled around him. The demon then used [Greater Teleportation] to go right behind Calca and Kelart just as Remedios was about to strike him with another attack. Remedios saw the Holy Queen and her sister being the next target and went desperate, and rushed past the paladins that stood between her and Jaldabaoth. It was too late when she reached there, as she saw that the demon had seized the Queen by the legs. Originally thinking he wanted to take her as a hostage, she was proven wrong when the demon stated that she would make a fine weapon instead. To demonstrate, the demon began to use her body and swing her directly into her own troops, which caused her ankles to be twisted in an unnatural manner. Unable to process the situation, Remedios's aide, Isandro Sanchez, made it for her by ordering a retreat.
Disappointed on humans choice, Jaldabaoth directed a [Fireball] and the paladins immolating them. Remedios survived the attack but to her horror, Calca was terribly brutalized by the demon when she tried to escape his grasp. Wanting her to act as a weapon, the demon swung her down repeated until her face was all but crushed. A paladin, angered at his queen treated like a tool, rushed at the demon with his sword, but the demon knocked him away using Calca as a club. Desperate to save Calca and locate her sister, Remedios demanded to her aid to tell her what to do. But when no satisfactory answer came, Remedios lashed at her subordinate's uselessness. Jaldabaoth, tired at seeing humans bickering amongst each other, decided to stop toying with them to signal his army to attack and occupy the city. He proceeded to smash the gates using a meteor that he summoned from the sky.[1]
Aftermath[]
In the aftermath of the shockwave from the meteor that collided with the city gates, Remedios was sent flying and separated from the attack force against Jaldabaoth. When she came back to her senses, she reunited with Gustav Montagnés and the surviving paladins, but they cannot locate Calca or Kelart. The two were later found to be dead, with Calca's upper body found missing and Kelart's head found being given to a Circlet Demon.[2][3] The inhumane desecration of the Holy Queen by "Jaldabaoth" has gradually driven Remedios into insanity, and eventually peaks after the discovery of Kelart's head, reducing the once-proud paladin into a raging, broken wreck and the perfect target for the Sorcerer Kingdom's manipulations.
Furthermore, the city gates are exposed, the demi-humans quickly overran the human defenders and most of the Holy Kingdom's frontlines were breached, signaling the start of the total defilement of the Northern Holy Kingdom. Many buildings were also converted into concentration camps where similar experiments as the ones performed in Demiurge's Ranch took place using captive humans and Demi-Human rebels as test fodder. Remedios and what was left of the Paladin Order fled the city to escape capture and reorganized the north forces into the Holy Kingdom Liberation Army. Despite this, their power alone is not enough, causing them to first find the Blue Roses, then the Sorcerer King for help, ending up with the latter coming personally to "help" them defeat Jaldabaoth. Unbeknown to the Holy Kingdom Liberation Army, this is a cleverly-arranged trap, and the moment they asked the Sorcerer King for help, they walked right into his and Demiurge's plan to ensnare the Holy Kingdom completely. Though members of the Northern Holy Kingdom survived, without a leader or line to the throne, the nobles of the Southern Kingdom refused to assist in retaking the north and formed the Southern Noble Alliance to maintain stability over the remnants of the Roble Holy Kingdom.
