* This is the first Military campaign that the Sorcerer Kingdom has directly lost.

** All their previous losses were either deliberate or designed to fail.

** This is partly due to Ainz not mobilizing the nation's full forces to appease human sympathizers.

Battle of E-Naüru was a battle in the war between the Re-Estize Kingdom and the Sorcerer Kingdom. It was the first major battle of the conflict.

Background

After the Re-Estize Kingdom's New Faction attacked one of their transports, the Sorcerer Kingdom declared war on the nation.

Given the difference in military might and unlikelihood of receiving foreign aid, since their nation technically instigated the war, the Kingdom's desperately tried to sue for peace. However, despite King Ramposa III going as far as to attempt to offer up his own life to try to appease Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown, the Sorcerer Kingdom's prime minister, Albedo, merely stated that the war would proceed in one month.

Thus, despite knowing they did not stand a chance, the Kingdom began preparing for war. However, this only applied for territories who were likely to be within the armies' path. On the other hand, regions that would likely only be effected by the time the Royal Capital had already fallen did not even bother to evacuate the civilians or build fortifications.

Unfortunately for the Kingdom, the date the Sorcerer Kingdom had given for the start of their invasion was all an elaborate ruse. In reality, while the Kingdom prepared, the Sorcerer Kingdom secretly marched their armies over the border and began invading those territories that thought themselves to be outside the line of fire. Like this, the Sorcerer Kingdom easily conquered the Kingdom's western and northern regions, cutting the nation off from its last remaining ally, the Argland Council State, and isolating the Royal Capital. Then, they massacred all the inhabitants and halted the flow of information out of these regions, causing the Kingdom's leadership to have no idea that the Sorcerer Kingdom had already begun their invasion.

To complete their encirclement, the Sorcerer Kingdom targeted the port city of E-Naüru. Before this however, news of the invasion had finally leaked out, when a noble escaped his territory just before the Sorcerer Kingdom attacked and made it to the port. Now knowing they were coming, the city began last-minute preparations. The city's overseer, Count Naüa, called on multiple organizations for aid. A special Magic Caster Unit was formed and the city's strongest Adventurer group, Four Armaments, was put in charge of the defenses. An evacuation order was also given, though most citizens had nowhere to go and thus choose to stay.

Before the Sorcerer Kingdom attacked, however, Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown was confronted by Nazarick's human sympathizers, who pleaded with him to stop the one-sided slaughter of innocent civilians. Thus, to satisfy them, Ainz only sent an army of low-ranking Undead to give the citizens of E-Naüru a fighting chance.

Battle

E-Naüru's defenders saw that the Sorcerer Kingdom's forces were mostly low-ranking Undead. Two stuck out though: a Death Knight and Death Warrior. Since both them were close-quarter combatants, Four Armaments decided that the best strategy was a long-range battle. However, arrows were unlikely to do much to the Death Knight and Warrior. This meant they would eventually have to engage them in close-quarters, in which case, the amount of damage they could inflict before they penetrated the city would decide the battle.

Once the undead were within range, archers began to loosen their arrows on them and actually managed to take out a fair bit. After just three volleys, however, the Death Knight suddenly began rushing towards the city gate. In response, the leader of Four Armaments, Scama Elbero, ordered mages to use [Fireball] on it. Despite hitting it at point black range, however, the Death Knight pressed on as if it had taken no damage at all. The magic caster of Four Armaments however told her fellows to press on the attack as the spells were believed to be effective on it. The undead eventually reached the gate, a blind spot for the magic casters where they couldn’t aim at it properly. The undead began bashing at the door, trying to force it open.

Scama ordered the city defenders to direct their attention towards other unmoving undead and what’s below the walls. While she baited one one at the gates to their line of sight to cast their spells immediately. Scama, Lilynette Piani and her magic caster comrade rushed to the other side of the gates at the bottom of the walls. The two not wanting to face the enemy head-on decided to deal as much damage to the undead as they could. Her friend casted [Lightning] at the monster through the door, causing it to make a roar that made one’s body tremble all over. The Death Knight hammered the door continuously and another [Lightning] but failed to cause the undead to cease. Scama then halted the magical attacks and ordered her friend to buff her instead. Both magic casters used [Anti-Evil Protection], [Lesser Strength], [Lesser Dexterity], [Haste] and other spells to counter special abilities and heighten Scama's body’s capabilities.

The gate finally gave way after and crashed onto the ground and the undead stepped over the broken threshold, and moved towards the adventurers. Scama used her tomahawk to create an ethereal copy of it to appear next to her. The undead responded by raising its shield high above its own head and smashed it down at the remains of the gate and moved to engage Scama. The gap between them was closed in an instant and it was planning to use its shield to crush her to death. She chose to use [Fortress] to halt the shield with her tomahawk. The Death Knight cleverly deflected the tomahawk with its shield, with the intent to break Scama’s stance. Scama finding the maneuver difficult, chose to give up resisting the undead's force, rolled to the side, and used the counter-acting force of that action to stand back up. Her ethereal axe swung from top to bottom but was deflected by undead's flamberge. At the same time, the undead charged towards Scama.

On the defensive again, Scama deflected attacks with her tomahawk and charged into her opponent. Her companions aided Scama using [Sunlight], creating a blinding flash of light from behind her to blind the enemy and to damage the undead. The flying caster sent out three bolts of light towards the undead with [Magic Arrow]. Despite receiving support, the undead's shield still blocked everything like it was a wall and left no openings for her to exploit. Even Scama hacked at it with her tomahawk but it was easily deflected. Seeing that the undead's movements were too clean and its proficiency with its shield was too high, Scama slowly backed off not only in fear but to allow the casters on the wall could have a clear shot at it. She couldn’t move too far away lest it ignored her and ran into the city. It was a scenario that needed to be avoided at all costs given how fast it can run.

Just in case the thief on Scama’s team was waiting at the sideline specifically to catch up to the monster should it choose to run into the city. Scama slowly kited the Death Knight while paying attention to its every move. The undead did not appear to have noticed and followed at a distance. Just as they were about to bring it into the line of fire, wails could be heard from above the adventurers announcing that the other undead were coming at the city. While the city defenders attempted to defeat the approaching undead from the walls, Scama's group tried to eliminate the Death Knight.

Scama stopped retreating and turned to face the Death Knight and darted towards it. Her tomahawk was easily blocked by the shield as was the ethereal copy. Her attacks were not enough to break down the undead’s defenses but the real attack was the [Magic Arrow] and [Shockwave] that followed by her comrades. The spell attacks were followed up by the rogue, who tossed a bottle towards the sides of the undead’s leg, causing it to be bound to the ground by the glue in bottle. Since the opponent was immobilized, Scama circled around to the undead's hand that did not hold the shield, the hand that held its sword, and began attacking. But the Death Knight swung its greatsword around, expertly parrying every hit that came its way. Even though its two legs were completely stuck on the ground and she had used martial arts to chain her attacks, Scama couldn’t land a single hit. The undead using brute strength to tear its foot away from the stone-tiled ground. Two more offensive spells were cast yet they still failed to bring it down. Soon the other undead, the Death Warrior, was standing at the gate.

The thief who had been executing combos with Scama couldn’t handle the pressure and retreated to her side. The Death Warrior responded in kind and moved to the Shield-Bearer’s side. The adventurers soon realized that the undead were highly sapient and the Death Knight was merely toying with them just to instill despair in them to buy time for his partner to come. Both enemies were there, and while it was a good opportunity to use Area of Effect spells, they were never cast as it was feared that it would provoke the undead to initiate their attacks.

Seeing the hopeless situation, Scama ordered her friends to run while she and the thief bought them some time. However before anything, the Death Knight's head had been pierced by what looked like a long needle. The undead was confused by the attacks as were the Four Armaments. Shifting their vision away from each other, their two opponents looked towards where that attack originated from. Another attack pierced the Death Knight’s head causing its giant frame to crumble. Soon enough a silhouette of a man could be seen in the air—an armored giant with a strange crossbow weapon.

Because it had attacked the Death Knight, Four Armaments concluded that it was not their enemy, and slowly moved away from the Death Warrior. The battle between the Death Warrior and the strange interloper began. The undead threw one of its blades at the armored giant. The armored giant did not try to avoid it but tanked the hit with its own body and the blade bounced off it. The sword disappeared into the air, only to show up back in the Death Warrior’s hand.

The armored being in the air pointed its weapon at the undead and after a brief flash of fire and lightning, what used to be single-shot attacks turned into an uncountable amount of projectiles. Faced with the unknown projectiles, the undead swung its swords and tried slicing whatever that was being targeted at it into pieces. But there was a limit to it fend against and its two swords could deal with the dozens or even hundreds of projectiles. The tiny projectiles flew at shocking speeds and penetrated the enemy. In a matter of moments the undead ceased to exist.

Aftermath

Scama and her friends were utterly speechless of what transpired. The thief however noticed that on the neck of the armored being was a necklace that held a metal plate, signifying it to be an adventurer. Though the metal plate on the necklace was of a color that they did not recognize. but by the process of elimination saw it to be adamantite. Lilyette believed it to be someone from Red Drop. The floating armor soon turned its back to adventurer group, but Scama called out to it which it responded by turning around and raising up its left hand, straightened its index and middle finger, and pointed them towards its forehead. Bidding farewell, the armored giant flew away. Left even more confused, the group however was hopeful as they now knew that they had someone this strong. It was believed that perhaps the Sorcerer Kingdom’s invasion would come to an end. Even under the pretext that whoever the armored being was, it was willing to break the Adventurer’s Code and probably will continue participating in battles from this point onward.[1]
