Battle of Carne Village (カルネ村の戦い) is a re-enactment game event in Mass for the Dead that was released on May 29, 2019 to June 5, 2019.

Background

This is a story you should have seen somewhere------. The village of Carne, located on the outskirts of the Re-Estize Kingdom, was in danger of being destroyed by a knighthood attack. However, the appearance of a masked magic caster changes the situation.

Summary

DMMO-RPG "YGGDRASIL," The player, Momonga, was transferred to another world with the Great Tomb of Nazarick, which is the base of the guild "Ainz Ooal Gown," just before the end of the game service.  There, the NPCs are discovered to be able to move and talk on their own, and Momonga was confused by the different sensations and emotions he had when he was in YGGDRASIL, and decided to explore this world.  And at the same time, at the frontier, Gazef Stronoff and his Warrior Troops find a ransacked village. He tells his Vice Captain to send the survivors to E-Rantel but the vice captain warns him that the attack on the villages was a trap to lure them out. Gazef disregards his warning and continues to pursue the culprits.

In Nazarick, Momonga using the Mirror of Remote Viewing discovers a human village being attacked by knights. At first, he doesn't want to get involved as there's no benefit in saving them but when he sees Sebas's face, it reminds him of Touch Me, who had saved him from being PKed, and the ideals which he holds. That makes him decide to save the village as a way to repay his debt to Touch Me. He informs the butler that he will be going out and to tell Albedo as he summons a [Gate] to the village.

Momonga teleports himself to the outskirts of the village, saving Enri Emmot and Nemu Emmot from a couple of knights. He kills two a death speall and another with a lightning spell. Using one of their corpses, he then summons a Death Knight which he orders to slaughter the attacking soldiers on sight before it rushes away. Albedo soon joins him, full equipped in armor. As for the humans he gives one of the girls a potion to drink, but as his appearance and Albedo's are frightening, Nemu tells her older sister not to drink it thinking it's poison. Seeing this as an insult to Momonga's generosity, Albedo prepares to kill them on sight and is stopped by Momonga. Enri eventually drinks the potion which causes the injury on her back to heal instantly. To protect them from harm, he casts sever spells on them for their safety and gives Enri two items of the Horn of the Goblin General. Before departing to take care of the remaining soldiers, the two girls thank him for saving them and request his name. He initially answers with his name, but he introduces himself as Ainz Ooal Gown intending to take the name of his guild for himself.

Albedo surprised by his decision to change his name to that of the guild wonders if that is okay. Momonga now Ainz Ooal Gown declares that he will use his guild's name until he finds his comrades which causes her to accept his decision. Ainz then decides to check up on the Death Knight to prevent if from killing all the knights as they may have information about this new world. Thus he and Albedo take flight into the air. Back at Carne Village, the knights had gathered sixty of the surviving villagers in the village square when the Death Knight appears. It attacked the knights who tried to defend themselves, but the undead's defenses are too strong to strike a dealing blow. The knights could only cower at the undead, however the newly christened Ainz Ooal Gown arrives with Albedo, flying above, and declare their presence. Ainz is now wearing the Mask of Envy and Járngreipr to disguise himself of his appearance. Ainz orders the Death Knight to halt its attack, and he gives his demands to the knights; if they throw down their weapons he would guarantee their safety. Immediately the knights cast down their arms and alter prostrate themselves before the Overlord at his suggestion. With Ainz satisfied at the submission, he orders them to leave and tell their owner not to cause trouble in this region, or else he will bring ruin to their country. Hearing that the knights flee. As for the villagers after reassuring them that he save them fro some compensation, he has a talk with the village chief who gives him the political spectrum on the surrounding regions and nations.

The village cleans up in the aftermath of the attack by the knights, as Ainz watches the burial of the dead. While possessing a Resurrection Wand, he declines to use it as it wouldn't be beneficial to him as the villagers might be distrusting of someone who can easily resurrect the dead. Albedo is eager to leave the area having a distain for the presence of the humans, Ainz agrees that they have overstayed their welcome. But before they could leave, the chief informs the two that men on horseback are heading towards the village.

Moments later, Gazef Stronoff and several members of the Warrior Troop arrived to render their aid to the village. Gazef learns from the chief that Ainz Ooal Gown saved the village from the marauding knights. The Warrior Captain thanks the magic caster, despite Ainz honestly stating he did it for money. The two engage in a friendly dialogue until one of the warriors report that the village has been surrounded by an armed force.

The force is soon revealed to be members of the Sunlight Scripture led by Nigun Grid Luin who orders his men to bring the operation to kill everyone in the village. Though they face the Warrior Captain of the Kingdom, Nigun is confident that they can slay him with their skills and also reveals a trump card given to him by his superiors, a Sealing Crystal. The magic casters then begin casting their spells to call upon their summons to the mission.

Carne Village is surrounded by the Scripture and their angels. Gazef Stronoff watching them from afar realizes that they are the Sunlight Scripture and suspects that the imperials knights that have been terrorizing the countryside were most likely from the Slane Theocracy. Ainz Ooal Gown asks why are they targeting this poor village as there is nothing of value. However Gazef informs him he does not know, the magic caster deduces that they are here for the Warrior Captain, understanding that he seems to be very unpopular in certain circles. In Gazef's suspicions, he believes that the nobles in the Kingdom colluded with the Six Scriptures using the destruction by the knights and the suffering of the commoners to draw him out. Rather than get involved in a volatile political dispute Ainz declines. Gazef attempts to implore him to give his aid even asking him to lend his Death Knight with offers of reward from the king. Ainz still refuses, forcing Gazef to suggest that he could forcibly conscript him. The magic caster is unimpressed with the threat of daring the human to try. Sensing that Ainz was not an enemy he should make, Gazef accepts his neutrality in this affair. While failing to secure the magic caster’s help in fighting the Sunlight Scripture the two shake hands, with the Warrior Captain thanking him for rescuing the villagers. Gazef makes one request, that Ainz protect the villagers promising he whatever he desired. Ainz brushes aside the offer but does honor the warrior’s request to protect the village. Before parting their separate ways, Ainz gifts Gazef small idol trinket.

After the Warrior Troop leaves to confront the Sunlight Scripture which leaves Ainz impressed with Gazef’s character. When the village chief queried why the Warrior Captain abandoned them the Overlord of Nazarick explained that Gazef was a selfish man but further consideration, Ainz began to understand that Gazef was a heading towards the enemy not as a suicide mission but to offer a distraction so as to let the villagers escape. Realizing the extent of Gazef’s sacrifice the village chief was ashamed of thinking so low of the former. Ainz consoled him that he should honor Gazef by seeking safety. For additional protection, Ainz orders the villagers to hide in one of the storehouses which he will protect with magic.

Gazef and his troop ride off to face the Sunlight Scripture. Gazef seeing an angel swoop down, drew his sword and slays it. He calls to his men to turn around and charge ahead to escape. A second angel approaches which Gazef incapacitates with his sword. Turning to the rest of his opponents, now outnumbered and alone Gazef prepares himself.

To his surprise, his men return back into the battle, rather than escape. He curses their stupidity but at the same time is proud of their loyalty. The magic casters launch spells at the riders mount causing some to fall. Several angels took the advantage to swarm the warriors. Though the warriors were on par with the angels in terms of their fighting power, they were soon in dire straits due to the support from the magic casters. The Warrior Captain then activated his trump card, his Martial Arts. Beginning with [Sixfold Slash of Light], he kills six angels in one sweep. Just as another angel attempts to lunge at Gazef with its flaming sword, Gazef uses [Instant Counter] to dodge it and strike it. He presses on with the attack by enhancing his speed with [Flow Acceleration] which allows him to dispatch angel after angel. The cleric seeing their summons being slaughter would not stand for this, thus their captain, Nigun Grid Luin order all the clerics to focus their spells on the Warrior Captain.

Gazef seeing that he was losing stamina due to his Martial Arts and that his men were totally outclassed, roared in fury at the magic casters. Already on his last legs, Gazef made one last desperate charge only to be hit by a spell in the belly. Their prey stunned, the Sunlight Scripture launched a barrage of thirty attacks on him. Gazef managed to stay conscious but was losing focus. Now on the defensive, he was being assaulted by angels as he parried their attacks.

Falling on one knee, Gazef found his body unable to move. Nigun seeing this orders all the angels to attack. Unwilling to die just yet and give those that led him into this situation satisfaction he managed to rise back to his feet. He declared himself the Warrior Captain with pride to enemies before him. Nigun unimpressed at the man's valor asks Gazef if that is all he has to say. He belittles Gazef for not saving himself, sacrificing his life to protect the pathetic commoners. Gazef then dares the man to take his head. Knowing that words are useless at this point, Nigin mocks Gazef telling him after he dies that the Scripture will massacre all the villagers.

Gazef then begins to laugh telling the priest that the village is protected by someone who is stronger than him. Nigun is confused at Gazef's words and believes that he is talking nonsense. He then orders the angels to kill Gazef. Just before the angels launch their attack, Gazef hears Ainz's voice, and find he and his men transported to the warehouse where the surviving villagers are hiding. Confused by his new surroundings he understands that Ainz saved him before collapsing from his injuries.

Ainz Ooal Gown introduces him and Albedo to the assembled Sunlight Scripture. He tries to engage Nigun Grid Luin in a conversation, though the priest is unimpressed having never heard of Ainz. Unfettered by the lack of an appropriate response makes it's clear to Nigun that he can’t defeat him. Nigun takes it as an insult for someone of lesser station making such a boast.

Ainz continues his dialogue with Nigun, asking him about the origin of the angels the Scripture have in their possession. The references like YGGDRASIL fail to be recognized by Nigun only earning his ire towards the magic caster. Nigun demands the location of Gazef to which Ainz states he teleported him to the village. Not expecting Ainz to answer he believes Ainz wishes to beg for his life. Ainz clarifies that the reason why he involved himself was that he overheard him planning to massacre the villagers. Ainz tells the priest that he finds it offensive that they would target the ones he is protecting. The hostility emanating from Ainz sends chills down Nigun’sand his men’s spines. Despite being veterans of countless battles the group feels fear as the magic caster takes a step forward.

The magic caster opens his arms wide, inviting an attack. Nigun was already wary of this stranger orders a pair of angels to charge at him. The summons complies running their swords through the man. To the shock of the priests, Ainz fails to fall in fact he uses his strength to lift the angels from him and slam them into the ground turning them to motes.

The sight of Ainz casually brushing aside two angels and his lack of apparent injuries send a wave of disbelief through Nigun’s party. Ainz ponders aloud to the connection between the Scripture and Angels from YGGDRASIL, before declaring to them that he will begin massacring them.

Fear seizes Nigun causing him to order all the angels to attack the magic caster. Calmly watching the approaching angels descend upon him, Ainz order Albedo to step back. Casting [Negative Butst], a wave of black energy erupts from Ainz and annihilates over forty angels. Nigun and his men are speechless at the impossible scene. Recalling Gazef Stronoff’s warning makes Nigun realize that the Warrior Captain was telling the truth of Ainz’s strength. Calming himself, Nigun accesses the situation and he estimates Ainz Ooal Gown Powers to be on par with that of a member from the Black Scripture. Using that comparison Nigun knows he is outmatched but believes that victory is still possible as he has the advantage in numbers.

The others in his group, however, lose discipline and began launching a volley of spells unto their opponent. Despite the rain of spells, Ainz is unharmed. More amused than hurt he asks the Magic Casters who taught them those spells.

One of the priests seeing the ineffect of their spells loads a bullet into his sling and fires at Ainz. Just as the projectile was launched, the man was immediately killed. The Scripture is slightly confused on the cause of death until they examine his body and discovered that he was killed by his own projectile. It becomes apparent that Albedo deflected the round back at the shooter. Ainz apologizes for the attack and converses with the Overseer Guardian as to why she intervened and the priests' attacks were futile and thus could not actually harm him.

Albedo objects stating that a mere sling bullet against him was an insult in him. Nigun sees the two banter sends out the Principality Observation forward to attack. The angel raises its mace and attempted to strike Ainz, which the undead calmly caught the blow with a palm. Annoyed Ainz casts [Hell Flame] consuming the alien in a black fire until it is incinerated. Niguin is aghast at the result of the latest attack, believing it to be unbelievable and wallows further into despair. He wails on who Ainz really is and why he never heard of his name. Ainz calmly asks his definition of impossibility, stating it shows the depths of his ignorance of the world. The Overlord once again declares his name to be Ainz Ooal Gown to the terrified masses.

Pressed to the wall, Nigun's men call to him for leadership, leading him to take out the artifact given to him by the upper echelons in the Theocracy, the Sealing Crystal. Contained within is an angel of the highest order that defeated a Demon God which he is confident is more than enough to wipe away Ainz Ooal Gown. Ainz recognizing it to be a spell-sealing crystal believes it to contain a super-tier spell that can summon a Seraph and takes a defensive stance and order Albedo to protect him. Nigun ritually breaks the item in his hand, summoning a Dominion Authority. The priest is in awe at its power and brilliance and being to mock Ainz at the futility of resisting.

Ironically Ainz is somberly unimpressed and can't believe that he was worked up for nothing. Ainz's casual attitude shocks Nigun to the point of fear, not wanting to believe Ainz could possibly defeat it, that he orders the angel to use [Holy Smite]. The summon complies and Ainz is engulfed in a 7th tier spell of brilliant light. As the light dies, the surrounding area is scorched but the target is unharmed by the attack. Ainz murmurs he took some damage and it was a good experiment to test his capability of feeling pain. This enrages Albedo to the point of her malice spilling out and infecting the priests with fear until Ainz reins her to sanity stating its all within his plans.

Nigun seeing Ainz's nonchalant behavior over the attack accuses the two entities as being Demon Gods. Realizing that Ainz was hurt at the very least by [Holy Smite] orders the angel to try again. Ainz does not permit a second attack and casts [Black Hole]. A small void engulfs the Dominion of Authority, swallowing it into oblivion. The captain at a loss of his angel demands who Ainz is as he had never heard of him before.

Ainz confirms his name as Ainz Ooal Gown and states that the Scripture has nowhere to run. Turning his attention on the humans at his mercy, Ainz considers at the priests' fates. Nigun attempts to barter for his life, offering to use his position in the Theocracy as an incentive for Ainz to ransom him. Albedo is unimpressed and declares that Ainz is the supreme master of Nazarick inferior life form like him should lower his head and await his fate to which Ainz agrees to the horror of Nigun.

Later Albedo asks Ainz why he saved Gazef, which the Overlord stated that it was because they caused and had to correct. Still she wonders why he gave the warrior such a rare item but Ainz tells her that it is all part of his future plans. Returning to the village they ae met by a grateful Gazef who thanks the two for saving him and his men. When Gazef asks about the whereabouts of the Scripture, Ainz casually states that he chased them off. Taking his word for it Gazef promises to repay Ainz for this debt and the two part ways.
