Éclair Éklair Éklare (エクレア・エクレール・エイクレアー) is the assistant butler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick.
Appearance[]
Despite being a Birdman, Eclair has a very unusual appearance for one; he is a literal Rockhopper penguin, with blond hair. Due to his physiology, Eclair moves in shuffling steps, so he is always carried by another servant when he wants to get around.
Personality[]
Éclair has great pride in being the assistant butler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick to the point of arrogance. Carrying himself with an enormous ego of self-worth, one of his greatest desires is to sit upon the throne of Nazarick. Though Éclair understands this act is treasonous to the Forty-One Supreme Beings and likely due to him also understanding that his creator specifically made him to be this way, he still respects them highly.
Background[]
Éclair Éklair Éklare was created by Ankoro Mocchi Mochi. As a joke, his personality settings were set to have the desire to conquer Nazarick.
Chronology[]
The Dark Warrior Arc[]

After the teleportation to the New World, Sebas Tian and the majority of the Pleiades have ventured outside of the tomb on a mission, leaving the assistant butler in charge of Nazarick's upkeep. Éclair encounters Demiurge in the halls of the 9th Floor near Ainz Ooal Gown's quarters. After informing Demiurge that Albedo is inside, both exchange words concerning Éclair's duties. Eclair excuses himself and has his subordinate carry him away to continue his chores.[1]
The Lizard Man Heroes Arc[]

Eclair at the Bar
Éclair arrives at the 9th Floor of Nazarick in the restaurant of his close comrade Sous-chef. There he finds the Myconid entertaining an extremely depressed Shalltear Bloodfallen. He tried to provide a drink for Shalltear to cheer her up only to spill it on the bench and apologizing to Sous-chef for it. Éclair learned of Shalltear's predicament and sympathizes with her. He is offered a glass of fresh apple juice from the orchards on the 6th Floor. Éclair found the taste to be not bad but lacking compared to the apples in stock in Nazarick. He learned that a dryad from the outside had joined Nazarick.[2]
The Two Leaders Arc[]

Trapped in CZ2128's Arms
At the staff canteen on the 9th Floor of Nazarick, Éclair is plucked from the hands of his Manservants by CZ2128 Delta. Much to his humiliation, she cuddled him like a plush toy. His attempt to extricate himself from the Pleiades member only exhausted the butler. However, thanks to Lupusregina Beta's distraction with her sister, the penguin is able to successfully escape from CZ2128 Delta's grasp.[3]
The Pleiades Day Arc[]

Sebas Tian mentioned that he and Tuare would be meeting Éclair to continue the latter's maid training. He has been avoiding CZ2128 Delta due to his previous experiences with her. This avoidance from him caused the automaton to seek out cute animals on the 6th Floor.[4]
Ainz’s Ambition Arc[]

Éclair is one of the servants who provided comfort for Ainz during his vacation.[5]
The Dinner Is All Nazarick Members Arc[]

Éclair attended a lavish meal prepared by the Head Chef. However, when he toasted to himself, everyone gave him a cold stare. Much to his distress, the Head Chef had an idea to use penguins in his cooking and wondered if he could use the Albino Penguins found on the 5th Floor.[6]

Mass for the Dead Arc[]

To get ready for guests coming to the Great Tomb of Nazarick on the Sorcerer Kingdom's National Foundation Day Ceremony, Sebas Tian mentioned the birdman to assist with the preparations.[7]
Éclair visited the bar on the 9th Floor, where he found Sous-chef serving a depressed Shalltear Bloodfallen, still distraught over the mind control incident. The birdman noted that the vampire had been frequenting the bar. He attempted to cheer Shalltear up when she disparaged herself for being a bad Floor Guardian, trying to remind her that she was keystone for the defense of Nazarick. And even if she had caused a great deal of trouble for Nazarick and Momonga, her role would not change.
When he words failed to brighten her mood, Éclair reminded the Floor Guardians should cheer up as she had been already forgiven by Momonga and it would be bad to go against his will. That touch a sore spot on Shalltear's overburden guilt, so Éclair then decided to put himself out for Shalltear, given he was a being who had repeatedly sought to usurp Nazarick.
Though Sous-chef pointed out his plots to take over Nazarick, were part of his creation, ordained by Ankoro Mocchi Mochi, to which Éclair was proud to be, and promised that one day he would be King of Nazarick and give Sous-chef a high position. When Shalltear verbally mused on wanting an active role in strengthening Nazarick's like the Pleiades, Éclair believed that the battle maids were hard at work in the human cities and decided to raise a toast to them.[8]
Éclair was present at the bar when Momonga, actually Pandora's Actor, and the protagonist came to visit the Bar. When he arrived the penguin offered the Sorcerer King to sit next to him at the cocktail bar. The Assistant Head Butler found it odd for Momonga to be coming to the Bar together with the homunculus, wondering if it was due to something special happening.
When it turned out not to be the case, Éclair asked if Momonga was tired of ruling, and offered to step to step in his place. Unknown to him the real Momonga who was invisible actually found the proposal nice. Though Pandora's Actor who was acting a body double merely silently stare at the birdman, causing Éclair to sweat and tell his liege to forget what he said.
Luckily the body double was distracted by Clavu's newest cocktail creation, White Porcelain Ruler and also the Nazarick cocktail for the protagonist. The group were then joined by Shalltear and her two Vampire Brides. In the midst of Shalltear enjoying "Momonga's" company, the birdman made another blurt of becoming a ruler, only to be silence by Shalltear when she made a face at him for such impudence. Though he did make one last attempt after Shalltear praised the Sorcerer King's attire which he intended to dress when he met with the representatives of the Quadripartite Alliance, but was cut off by Clavu. Even so Pandora's Actor in Momonga's appearance thanked the butler and the others for having him at the bar after he left.[9]
The penguin was present in the Amphitheater during the mock battle that pitted Cocytus and Shalltear against Nazarick's guests, the Mercenary Knights, Aggresiel and Billiophia. After the battle, Éclair worked with the general maids to prepare the Amphitheater for a venue to host a feast for the knights.[10]
In a competition to decide a temporary replacement for the undead guards at E-Rantel for a festival celebrating the Quadripartite Alliance, Demiurge focusing on appearances, recommended Éclair and his Manservants. Who while not appearing too threatening made the perfect being to be underestimated by humans, especially since they would have Shadow Demons accompanying them. Éclair took the chance to promote being the ruler of Nazarick, but like always was not taken seriously. Momonga dismissed the idea as it would reallocate too much labor to the endeavor.[11]
The penguin along with Foire were known to inspect the bath of Momonga, to make sure the bathing attendant Miyoshi was properly cleaning it. Éclair praise the slime's work claiming the drain was clean enough to lick.[12]
Later when Éclair and Sebas were cleaning the Round Table Room, Pandora's Actor came looking for Momonga wanting to show him an item that must be useful to his master.[13]
Éclair crashed a private afterparty of LittleMasStar at the Bar. Although Clavu politely told him that it was a private event, the penguin insisted that he was an official associate which was confirmed by Demiurge. There he spoke as a genuine fan of the idol group's performance and expressed emotion at Neutally's (Albedo's) retirement. After the idol group left, the penguin fantasized of becoming an idol and performing before a crowd. But his dream was shot down by Clavu stating it wasn't going to happen.[14]
The penguin was at the Bar again, with Clavu and the protagonist, where he heard from the protagonist that the Sorcerer Kingdom was planning to make swimsuits as a trade item to establish relations with the people from another world. Seeing how busy the protagonist was, Éclair offered to lend his manservants but was declined. Yuri arrived bringing water-repellent fabric for Clavu. And at Éclair's insistence the maid agreed to have a drink. Clavu having prepared her Whirl Pool That Swallows Swimsuits, Éclair tried to slide it down the table to Yuri, only to have it slide off the bar top and shatter. This earned him the ire of Clavu for the mess.[15]
Abilities and Powers[]
Éclair is an assistant butler who is left in charge of the upkeep on the 10th Floor of the Great Tomb of Nazarick during Sebas Tian's absence. Unlike the frightening monsters that live in Nazarick, Éclair's fighting prowess is low, since his overall strength level is 1.
Relationships[]
Ankoro Mocchi Mochi[]
Éclair is created by Ankoro jokingly. He has considerable respect for his creator and the other Supreme Beings regardless of his intention. And like with all the other NPC's for their creators, Éclair's loyalty and respect for her is the strongest due to him being her creation.
Sebas Tian[]
No direct interaction between Sebas Tian and Éclair has been shown, however as Head Butler, Sebas Tian is Éclair's superior.
Sous-chef[]
One of Eclair's closest acquaintances on the 9th Floor of Nazarick. The two possess a bond where the myconid allows the Birdman to call him by his nickname 'Piki'.
Shalltear Bloodfallen[]
Éclair sympathized with Shalltear for her involuntary uprising, as he considered betrayal his function. Learning of Shalltear's betrayal, he attempted to recruit her into joining him in his conquest of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. However, his words have only cause Shalltear to sink more into her depression about betraying Ainz.
Aura Bella Fiora[]
Éclair is close enough to Aura to the point they refer to each other with nicknames outside of work. That is because the Supreme Beings who had made them were close to each other, and they felt similarly close to each other.
Mare Bello Fiore[]
Éclair is close enough to Mare to the point they refer to each other with nicknames outside of work. That is because the Supreme Beings who had made them were close to each other, and they felt similarly close to each other.
Yuri Alpha[]
Éclair is close enough to Yuri to the point they refer to each other with nicknames outside of work. That is because the Supreme Beings who had made them were close to each other, and they felt similarly close to each other.
CZ2128 Delta[]
CZ2128 is known to adore Éclair and cuddles him as if he were a plush toy. However, it is a nightmare to the penguin and tries his best to avoid being trapped in her arms.
Pestonya Shortcake Wanko[]
Éclair is close enough to Pestonya to the point they refer to each other with nicknames outside of work. That is because they've been created by the same Supreme Being.
Demiurge[]
Eclair shares a cordial relationship with Demiurge. He thinks Demiurge's wisdom is second to his own. The two would pay heed to each other's respective duty on the job. However, if the order was given by the Supreme Being, Demiurge would kill Éclair without hesitation and have no objection to it.
Homunculus Maids[]
In the Anime, while he has a cordial relationship with them as servants under Ainz, Éclair's declaration of becoming the future ruler of Nazarick left a displeased look among the Homunculus Maids.
Trivia[]
- It is common knowledge among Nazarick's inhabitants that Éclair is eyeing the throne of Nazarick. However, since this detail was part of his creation by one of the Forty-One Supreme Beings, it is ignored.
- While Éclair's desire to conquer Nazarick is known and accepted by all the NPCs, many still tend to show animosity and dislike towards him because of it.
- Eclair's unusual physiology for a Birdman, being a literal penguin, was implied to be a purposeful modification to his physical settings. As he seems to have been made as a joke, his appearance may be part of this joke, as it makes it nearly impossible to take him seriously.
- Even though Éclair wants to conquer Nazarick, he is still loyal to the Supreme Beings and regards them with respect.
- Ten masked manservants serve under Éclair, assisting him in his duties and help transport him.
